Title: 13 Jan 2010: a backwards '80s VT
Post by: RGMike on January 13, 2010, 08:22:31 AM
er, Chartbusters. Whatever.  starting with '89 and working in reverse to '80.

gonna miss today completely with a 10:00 meeting & tomorrow I'll hear the first 2/3 in the car on the way to a 10:30 meeting in Palo Alto.  Would much rather have heard the last two days' sets than this one.

Fogheads must really like these Chartbuster sets, and iirc AL did an '80s one recently (which was better than expected) and it must've gone over big, so here's another.  Wasn't "Walk the Dinosaur" in the Top ten around this time in '89. It'd be a fine TOTHK...

Gaz came up w a name for this endeavor: Invertical Tasting

I skipped over Cher (but I'll still give it a BOSFRA).  Def Leppard is a guilty pleasure..

oh, it's "Auto-rewind '80s!", sez Jason Jones (if that's really him). PG shows us his big dipper.  This amusement never ends!

If I needed a reminder why I spent the latter half of the 80s listening primarily to the Grateful Dead, this set is providing it. Even the PG is not resounding with me. No BOS candidates so far.

the 80's seemed like a good idea at the time - tho the charts rarely reflected it.

Gotta say I'm entertained so far, and the Cher was one helluva bustout. I'd rather hear this sorta cheeze than the mopey KFOG-playlist stuff Dave used to feature in '87/'88/'89 sets.

and speaking of Dave: heeeeeeere's Huey! (speaking of big dippers)

BOS2 VH, "Jump" really is one of the great pop singles of the decade.

And why oh why didn't she play "Back in Time" here?  It's so set-appropriate, and a way better song than "Power of Love", as I've mentioned before.  Maybe she didn't use it since it's in her intro montage.

Oy says Eddie Grant.  I agree.  This set is not that exciting.

I agree, but these are supposed to be big hits, I reckon. Which "BIT" wasn't, really. This is also not following the "Chartbusters" template of hits fom the charts in this particular week, since "Power of Love" was a Summer single, as is MAW, which I def coulda done w/out.

Ditto the Blondie, one I've long ago tired of.

Agree. Too many songs I've heard too many times in my life.

Strong start with good cheeze, and a nice finish with Devo... but a saggy middle with one too many 'trinas.

The replay didn't start until 1:10am my time, following my second hearing of the Stones' "You Can't Always Get What You Want" this evening (the first was in a bar while I was seething on my break from work; I think the universe is telling me something).

"Sledgehammer" reminds me of a mondegreen I've probably shared here before: for years I thought the repeated closing line was "Show for me, I will show for you," rather than "Chauffeur me, I will chauffeur you."  It still makes sense.

WOS Huey et al.  Seriously some of the worst lyrics in the history of rock.

"First time you feel it, it might make you mad.  Next time you feel it, it might make you mad.  But you'll be glad ..."  Come the fuck on.

"They say that all in love is fair / Yeah, but you don't care."  What the hell does that even mean?

Well, of course, the lyrics won't make any sense written that way! It's like reading half a of a sentence. You've got to continue singing the verse and the bridge, man. The meaning is in there. And it's a good one. You'll know what to do when it gets hold of you.

actual lyric:

Quote
First time you feel it, it might make you sad
Next time you feel it it might make you mad
But you'll be glad baby when you've found
that's the power makes the world go 'round

makes perfect sense to me.  ;)
