And I'm here before 9, for once! Have a meeting in two minutes, hope to be back in time for the Time Warp.
Dave sez we should play spot the vinyl, and even spot the 45 if we;re really on top of it.
Yay, its Baby Now THat I've Found You...

assuming this is a "typical" Friday, this will be our first week without a late '80s/early '90s set in a while, Praise the Lawd!

I believe you're right. The suits must be taking the week off for the holiday.
-
This might be my last 10am check in for a while. Last day current job. Tuesday is a new job. Don't have any idea about ability to stream or logistics with cow-orkers. May go back to headphones. I'll do the 10pm log in.

assuming one considers 1986 "mid" rather than "late" '80s... then the last time we went without a too-recent set was mid-March (St Pat's Week).

Hey, enjoy the last day at the old grind. One assumes you won't be working too hard--anyone taking you to lunch? Drinks after work? A combination of the two?

Congratulations once again on getting out of a bad situation! We knew you could do it. Sorry you couldn't give yourself a few days' down time before starting the new job, but at least you've got a holiday weekend to rest up.
I'll actually be out of sight next week: Monday I have a visitor in town (a guy named Victor whose virtues I've extolled many a time on this board), then I'm spending three days with my family in Pittsburgh and four days at my 10-year college reunion in bustling Meadville, PA. I'm a little trepidacious about the latter, fearing I'll be the only single person in attendance. At least I can claim a somewhat-productive marriage to my work.

Did lunch Wednesday, exit interview yesterday and then party at local bar after work yesterday. Trying to plan time for a pedicure later this afternoon.

woooo hoooo 68! God bless ya Dave!

1968: I'm ready to declare a 10-way tie before the first note.
"Baby, Now That I've Found You" is actually somewhat of a Katrina on WCBS, the NYC oldies station. As are "Cecilia" and "People Got to Be Free," for reasons that elude me (yeah, they're great songs, but why *those* songs instead of others by those artists?).
-
woooo hoooo 68! God bless ya Dave!
And congrats Ali! "Baby Now That I've Found a New Job"
-
VVHM Marfa! "Honey Chile" Sweeter than the cake that Grandma used to bake!
-
Honey Child is most certainly one of the vinyl cuts--couldn;'t miss that "warmth of vinyl" needle-noise lead-in!
-
As Urth noted yesterday, Dave's been impressively digging in the crates lately, a trend that continues today with "Honey Chile," a breakout for me if no one else.

yeah, i think maybe it's the 45. congrats, ali!!! and i'm crossing my 10@10 fingers for you.

Congrats to Ali on her new job!
Happy Friday to one & all
Hurray for 1968
Boo! Sen. Kennedy getting shot.

I have not heard "People Got to Be Free" onthe radio in 30 years. Has Dave ever played it? My folks had the single, so it was one of my childhood turntable faves.
-
Nice segue from the RFK assassination clip (which we've heard lots) into Albatross (which we haven't, at least not so much on 10@10).
-

phoned in and...
...yes it was!

He has played it, perhaps in an all-Motown set. But it's rarity enough for me to say "kudos, Dave". Marfa never got her full due, IMHO.
-
BOS1 - Scarborough Fair, cause it brings back a lot of good memories...

neat-o! thanks. i think s&g is the other vinyl, but it could be a bad connection on the stereo...

< Heretic Alert >
I like "Scarborough Fair" better with Muppets singing it.

Note to POC:
Just saw some cool pics from your Argus gig the other night. Very cool Hendrix-like shot. You'll get a link to the online album.

BOS #2, S&G, "Scarborough Fair/Canticle"
Generals order their soldiers to kill and to fight for a cause they've long ago forgotten.
Tthe melody progression on those last 5 words knocks me out every single time.

Ha! I mentioned this Vanilla Fudge coke jingle in my article for StarPolish.com on the EMP Pop Conference!
http://www.starpolish.com/features/columns/article.asp?ID=733
I have this and 50 others on CD, need to find a way to get them all to you. "For Educational Purposes Only," as Douglas Wolk was careful to disclaim as he gave me the disc.
-
If you played "I Can't Stand It" and "I'm Losing You" at the same time, would you notice the difference?
-
Minor coincidence: I was listening to Camper Van Beethoven's cover of POMM yesterday afternoon.

"20,000 eyes diggin' Vanilla Fudge..." That was legendary NY DJ Rosko doing the voiceover. That Coke CD was commercially avail at one point, is it now out-of-print?
-
Hey, there. Finally showing my face in the net. BOS for Pictures of Matchstick Men. Have you heard the Camper Van Beethoven version of this? You should. A violin does "the riff". Funny.

HM to Pictures of Matchstick Men--ah, the Thamesmen, I mean Status Quo.
Love that wah-wah! More wah-wah!
-
The Party was a great movie, but I must confess, I was hoping for Valley of the Dolls as 1968's "10@10 Goes to the Movies."
-
BOS - Grazing in the Grass ... I love this song!!!!
-
perhaps peter sellers inspired pootietang?

I love the dark image with the red background.

BOS #3 Hugh Masekela. This is when South African Music finally got put on the map for most folks, for which Paul Simon repaid Hugh as much as he possibly could 20 years later.

Really? Wolk specifically stated that it hadn't been available, that he acquired them through other means (eBay and P2P, I'm guessing). Among the highlights: Uncle Ray and Ree-Ree together; the Left Banke; and both the Who and Dusty Springfield singing of "Great Shakes," which I wish was still on the market (the malt additive, not the songs).

Ironic that Illinois, which cost Nixon the election in 1960 ("it is being reported that every cemetary in Cook county went strongly for Kennedy" as the old joke put it), should be the state that put Nixon over the top in '68.

Oh yes, yess. VHM for GitG. Baby can you dig it?
Dang, SWLABR now. Excellent set, eh?
-
BOS #4 & #5, respectively for Paul/Beatles & Cream. Cream is making me feel like taking the rest of the day off & starting the weekend early!
...like you never ever done one wrong thing.
-
I fell asleep and missed all before Cream.
congrats Ali!

I did too, but it was #5, I Can't Stand It.
-
can't believe it! Will have to listen tonight. Missed Albatross too, jeez!

I'd thought the same, I distinctly heard that slowing burp in the middle.

perhaps it was taken from a cd that wasn't mastered very well...my bos went to swalbr.

So, all you young'uns should have recognized the riff taken for that song Christopher Walken did the video for? [my mind is dead right now, can't think of any names]
[later, jogging my mind via Google, it's Fatboy Slim, and Weapon of Choice I was thinking of]

PootieTang ain't fit to kiss the hem of Peter Seller's Nehru jacket...

I haven't seen it, but I believe you're talking about "Weapon of Choice" by Fatboy Slim. That riff comes from Albatross? Not sure I know what Albatross sounds like :(

Saw it in Tower 10 years ago; nearly bought it and am sorry I didn't.

No, you missed my subject line!
The riff comes from Chambers Bros, "I Can't Stand It"

Ah, yes I did. I confess that I never look there. Bad habits from RadioParadise forum-ing where the subject is never used. The forum IS the subject. Gotta get recalibrated.

ok, how about just touch it?

Sorry I missed the commentary. I have a boss at the You-Know-What who ALWAYS likes to suprise me with some last-minute "emergency" on Fridays.
-
I missed everything helping a cow-orker with a non-issue.
Good luck on the new gig, Ali.
The powers-that-be are cutting us loose at 2 today! Woohoo. I think I'll shoot out to a local golf course....

Thanks, man. I'm playing tomorrow and Sunday too. Should help my game to come back around. Didn't play enough this winter, and I can't play to my handicap at the moment. Showing signs of improvement lately, though I keep blowing up on the first hole. Played Poppy Hills a couple weeks ago and took an 11 on the first hole, but still shot 88 (one stroke out of the money in our club tourney).

That sounds lovely, particularly if there's sun shining on whatever links you decide to play. (It be foggy in SF--summer's here...) I'm hoping to grab a sack of discs and get in 18 or 36 holes of disc golf myself at some time this weekend.

mmm...Marx Meadows, driving down from the Sierras in hmmm...1974? arriving at MM to hear the sound of Jerry Garcia's guitar sparkling in the breeze, the notes flying all around, doing "I Second That Emotion" I believe. Well, that's what I think of every time I drive by.

an 11 on the first hole? Sounds like my score, losing a few balls in the creek!
We're doing Poppy Ridge on the 13th; I only played it once before, and it ate me alive. Then on to Tahoe, and a little golf at Northstar.

Happy Memorial Day Weekend, everybody!

THAT sounds good. That's where we spend a week at the end of August. I have yet to play their course.

[what do you mean, 'getting?']
I was ranting earlier in the day about the Chambers Bros being used in Fatboy Slim, but it was a different song! I listened tonight, and realized my mistake. The song I'm thinking of is "All Strung Out Over You." So, if for some reason any of you doesn't have this album, get it. The whole record is killer.

Didn't lose a ball, though I did go in the hazard once. The four putt didn't help matters....
I'm playing Poppy Ridge next Sunday. Played Alameda today -- a lovely little 78 from the back tees. Doubled the last hole, but I was already pretty stoked -- 4 birdies in one day!
I love Northstar, though it's been a few years. Have a great time!

Happy Memorial Day Weekend, everybody!
You too, buddy. Love the new avatar!
