er, wha?
ETA: oh, it's a Foghead's Birthday. "Peek-A-Boo"! BOS Siouxie!
-
A 21st birthday set for one Eric Kingsbury. So that means '88, no?
WTF is this TOTHK? I have no idea, hope that means we're going to uncharted territory today.
-
I missed whatever AL said in intro, but TANC: I was just listening to "Peekaboo," my favorite Siouxisie tune, this week.

a set programmed by a birthday-ing Foghead. Hope he has good taste; Siouxie is a good omen.
-
BOS Siouxsie. She had big hair, right? She needs some Max Headroom!

Mr Palmer recycles himself.
-
WOS to "Simply Irresistible," simply an "Addicted" knockoff.
-
So far so good. Two songs in, one bustout and one one-timer. BOS Siouxsie (thanks for the ID, fellas), VHM the late Mr. Palmer.
-
Long Cool One? Wow, these Roberts Palmer and Plant were into recycling way before it was really fashionable!

Make that one two-timer. Simply Irresistible was in the DB twice with two slightly differing spellings.
-
Percy's got a Tall Cool One. And a long hot percy! BOS2

Zep purists were horrfied that Percy was sampling -- "isn't that what rappers do? EWWW!"
-
VHM to Siouxsie!

BOS to TMBG's Ana Ng!

Holy flaming mother of pop! uber-BOS4 Mr Astley. You've been Rick-rolled! Stock-Aitken-Waterman at the top of their powers.
-
Lol...didn't expect to hear this! BOS2 NGGu^.
-
hopefully I'm tuned in to the right station; if so, BOS David Lindley
-
"She's a HAIRHOPPER! That's what SHE is!"
BOS5 the great Divine in the orig Hairspray
-
Lol...didn't expect to hear this! BOS2 NGGu^.
BOS for one of my faves, David Lindley. (though not really this song in particular)
-
VVHM to the late Divine.
And another BOS to David Lindley and El Rayo-X covering Do Ya Wanna Dance? Loved Lindley et al back in this era.
ETA: Like Davefish, this wasn't my fave of theirs, but the nifty surf-guitar break quoting from numerous other songs is kinda cool.

Hey Mike, when you saw Hairspray, did you feel you were Ric-rolled? :)

But the closest we've come to one -- This is one of the best '88 sets evah, IMHO. Eric what's-his-name rules!
-
Jeezus! DJ Jazzy Jeff and Fresh Prince!! BOS(6)FRS for yet another bustout.

I wonder if Mom would buy me some sex packets...
-
"Mom, this shirt is plaid, with a butterfly collar!" My friends and I loved trying to memorize all of this at the time.

Almost but not quite--this appeared once before, about 3 1/2 years ago.

WOS Ray Charles, whoring himself out to the Calif Raisin Board.
-
"I'm an adult now!" VHM to... I forget who this is.

I suppose the man liked his raisins, but I have to think that if he could actually SEE the end product commercial, that he'd take his name off!
8)
-
BOS3 to David Lindley. I'm on the line on whether INXS gets an HM.
And ROFL @ DJJJ/FP. Worth a BOS4 for sure.
-
"I'm an adult now!" VHM to... I forget who this is.
Pursuit of Happiness, iirc. Thought it was the Beastie Boys for just a sec. Now I'd love to hear them in a 10@10 one day.

I've been watching Nanny reruns on Nick-at-Nite, and towards the end of that show's run, he appeared as Fran's grandma's boyfriend. Very strange.

Now I'd swear Dave played "Fight For Your Right" once, but then I didn't remember Fresh Prince...

listening away from my computer until the end there, you recall correctly. They were usually abbreviated to TPOH back in the day.
My biggest Woo-Hoo moment was hearing Ana Ng finally, something I asked for many times when Dave would play "Birdhouse" to death.
-
Very nice ending with the Pursuit of Happiness...VHM.
Eric should fill in when AL's on vacation.

indeed, this was really all I've ever been asking for in these usually boring late '80s/early '90s sets: a couple bustouts and a couple pure pop-chart items. Not so hard to do really, and it was accomplished skillfully today.
ETA: And it wasn't clear from the backannounce if "Eric" chose the songs or AL. She said Eric's dad requested 1988 because Eric's birth was announced by Dave on 10@10 on this date in '88 (wonder what year it was that day?).
-
Bonus track was Michelle Shocked's When I Grow Up, which is being used for some commercial product. Saw it last night, advertising women's health product of some sort, possibly? Great song.
Speaking of great songs, I wish I could hear one instead of 21 Guns for once.

I'm proud to say those are Kaiser spots -- touting our mammogram program. "Kaiser women get mammograms -- do you?" or something like that. Even if I didn't work here, I'd have to say it's a really cool commercial.

I asked AL and she said she put it together. I was wondering how a 21 year old was a such a fan of Siouxsie, David Lindley, etc. (still possible, but unlikely.) Oh well.

I'm thinking the Foghead Dad made the request, not Eric himself. Both my younger brothers got married in '89, so it's certainly within reason that I could have gotten married myself before that & immediately started having kids, in which case I would most certainly have remembered Siouxsie* and the rest. As it stands I didn't get married until '96, and my kids are turning 10 & 8 next week, not 21.
* I have a distinct memory (because I had a limo-driving gig on New Years's Eve & was thus sitting inthe car) of the 1988 Year End Countdown on 91X, and "Peekaboo" was #1 overall, narrowly edging out my personal choice - U2's "Desire" which was #2.

Wow, both your kids were born right around Christmas? Big fun at your place around the end of the year.

I guess not, I got interrupted & then distracted & then forgot.
