AL has had a stretch of unbelieveable quality since the beginning of last week; I feel a '90s set coming on, tho' a theme (Funny Friday?) would make my day.
ETA: '81, much to my relief. Has potential. Go get 'em, AL! BOS a Stones TOTHK.
-
nope, Hanging Fire in 1981.
-
WOS Styx, channelling the Cars.

WOS Styx, channelling the Cars.
It's a Bob Stroud 1981 set so far.

WOS Styx, channelling the Cars.
I was gonna give it a VHM as it was the last song of theirs I remotely liked, and ended a streak of syrupy ballads. But I can see your comparison.

Add me to the list. I turned it way up.

"Hey good looking! I'll be back to pick you up later!"
BOS for Mr. Microphone
And another for "Bad Mamma Jamma"!
-
hey baby, talk into the microphone, nudgenudge winkwink.
OMG! BOS2 Carl Carlton -- she a BAD mammajamma!
ETA: Mr Carlton was pretty bad his own damn self!

what was that movie clip earlier? sounded like Bruce Dern to me, but I'm not placing it in a movie.
-
She's built! She's stacked! She's BOS!

Wasn't it "Raiders of the Last Ark"? (Harrison Ford) (Or was there more than one?)
HM for "Superfreak". The best in class, but almost dead from overexposure. And two in a row from my "80's Funk" CD.

WOS: Rush channeling Rush.
now there's a bass player who can sing! :)

she's a bad superfreaky mamma jamma. VHM Slick Rick; I've heard this one a few too many times to get excited about it.

Unexcited sentiment jinx. And a mondegreen I didn't know about. I thought the background line after
"in a limousine"
was
"long and black and shiny, yeah"
which is great, I think, but it's actually
"going back in Chinatown"
apparently.
-
Go Rick James ... from Buffalo!
she's got incense wine and candles ... and chicken wings!
-
Mike Reno's on his knees, making love to whoever he please. Are those red leather pants padded in the knees?
-
aaaack! WOS3 "Turn Me Loose", LoverSagaBoy (sorry, they're the same band to me)
-
Above average Loverboy, but still...bleah.
-
... and right around the corner from Buffalo, we have Toronto, featuring Loverboy! (and Rush)
I guessing this is the official end of the AL streak.

we discussed this here recently when it showed up in those Visa ads -- they use the "Chinatown" line and I was dumbfounded first time I heard that. I always heard it as "long & black & shiny" too.

fingers crossed...

I looked it up. It's Iggy Pop; I'm much more familiar with David Bowie's version.
I thought it was Bauhaus for a minute.

That's Iggy!
ETA: I see Davefish beat me to the ID, but I didn't have to look it up.

This "Bang Bang" thing is NTM ... and WOS3 after the Rush and Leatherboy.

It gets a BOS(3)FRA for being an ATBB, not for quality. BOS4 U2, before Bono was God.

BOS U2, Gloria. No one sounded like The Edge back then.

ETA: Apparently it's Mission from Burma. Never heard of 'em!
-
OMGWTFLOL! Mission of Burma! uber-BOS5 and bustout-of-the-week.
-
HOLY F**K!!!
BOS of the month Mission of Burma!
Once I had my heroes
Once I had my dream
But all of that is changed now
They've turned things inside out
The truth is not that comfortable, no
And mother taught us patience
The virtues of restraint
And father taught us boundaries
Beyond which we must go
To find the secrets promised us, yeah
That's when I reach for my revolver
That's when it all gets blown away
That's when I reach for my revolver
The spirit fights to find its way
A friend of mine once told me
His one and only aim
To build a giant castle
And live inside his name
Cry and whispers sing in muted pain
That's when I reach for my revolver
That's when it all gets blown away
That's when I reach for my revolver
The spirit fights to find its way
Tonight the sky is empty
But that is nothing new
Its dead eyes look upon us
And they tell me
We're nothing
But slaves (That's when I reach for my revolver)
Just slaves (That's when I reach for my revolver)
That's when I reach for my revolver
That's when I reach for my revolver
That's when I reach for my revolver
That's when I reach for my revolver

BOS of the month Mission of Burma!
I've heard of them, but not familiar w their stuff. Nice to hear here in this set which featured too many well-worn songs. pretty raw, and Clashy. I'll give it BOS and the Stones HM b/c I love Tattoo You
-
AL has pulled this one out of the crapper. BOS6 Kinks.
-
Set's really picking up at the end here with some heaviosity from the Kinks.
-
Ray Davies? Kinks? gotta give it another BOS
-
NTM Clash?
ETA: Apparently it's Mission from Burma. Never heard of 'em!
Annalisa must have heard of them back in Boston in the day.
per AMG:
Of all the punk-inspired bands that came out of Boston in the early '80s, none were better than Mission of Burma. Arty without being too pretentious, capable of writing gripping songs and playing with ferocious intensity, guitarist Roger Miller, bassist Clint Conley, drummer Peter Prescott, and tape head Martin Swope galvanized the city's alternative rock scene, and despite a too-short existence, set a standard for excellence that has rarely been equalled

I was going to say that even when it starts out slow, her sets almost always end on a high note, or two.

indeed, she has a habit of starting with overly-familiar tracks and then piling on the raritites'n'bustouts. This set did have *three* WOS's from me, but still managed *six* BOS's. So she's still smokin'.

just listened to the set again..top notch! Gloria is quite the anthem. I lurve Rush, esp their classic "middle" period, so you know that is a BOS, and I think Fogheads may have voted the same way. They've opened many a concert w Tom Sawyer, ane for a good example, watch Rush in Rio, a DVD of their concerts down there in 2003? 04? Many Brazilians lurve Rush, too, and the opening strains of TS prompt this one lady(?) to look to the heavens, clasp her hands in prayer and give thanks. you can see it here at the 2:10 mark: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k7reXTabVlQ
the Styx song, well, what can you say to that bit of moldy cheese? except it reminds me that I need to put on my leg warmers and go to aerobics class tonight. ;) See? There's always a bright side, even to songs that prompt widespread WOS voting.

BOS: Mission Of Burma
HM: U2
GBO (Good but overplayed): Rush, Rick James
WOS: Loverboy
Would love to hear in a 1981 set, but probably won't: Elton John, "Nobody Wins"

Oh wow - I've never heard this one! There are quite a few Elton charters 1977-1983 that I don't know b/c they didn't make it onto his GH comps. I'll YouTube that one in a bit.
Meantime, I'm listening to the replay and wondering if AL sped up "Superfreak" 5-10%. It sounds perkier than usual.

CRAP. I do not believe AL played "Revolver." Or maybe I do--Burma's a Boston band, so she probably has some history with them. Saw them in '81 opening for Psychedelic Furballs at a disco in Sacto.
Btw, if you like "Revolver" then seek out Academy Fight Song. Another of their anthems from the early 80s. And they're still around--after a lengthy hiatus, they got back together a few years ago, and just released a new record this year. Saw 'em at the Doug Fir in Portland earlier in Nov.

I have a copy of his 1976-1986 Greatest Hits, which I believe has this, along with "Don't Go Breaking My Heart", "I'm Still Standing", "Nikita", and a few others that he seems to have shyed away from, such as "Empty Garden (Hey Hey Johnny)", "Who Wears These Shoes" and "Kiss The Bride". I'm thinking that this was part of his life he'd just as soon forget.
