OOOHH!!! Kinks! BOS in the TotHC position.
-
Well, you'll have to go all the way without me...
Stupid staff meetings.....

Oh, if only!
more likely Huey & Katrina and maybe "Endicott".
-
Dunno about Let's Go All The Way, but we're gonna Do It Again with the Kinks. I remember liking this record a lot when it was released (even saw them on this tour I think), but can't say I've heard it in ages. A 10@10 bustout? A good TOTHC in any case, particularly for 1985.

Dave has played it before tho' not much.

BOS#2, "Can't Get There From Here" from Fables Of The Reconstruction.
Didja guys hear Dave talking about a top 10 albums of the 80's list? He nominated Avalon, and promised that this will be the topic of discussion tomorrow morning. I think it was Peter who mentioned this REM album as a possiblity.

He's played this one*, but I don't think he has played "Living On A Thin Line" yet.
*btw this is another Peaked-at-#41 song (& it did so in the late fall of '84, not '85, but we won't go into that).

I'm giving my BOS to Animotion's "Obsession." So corny yet so sexy. No one else has ever bridged that particular gap to my knowledge.
Albums of the '80s won't be complete without Songs From the Big Chair, Nebraska, Born in the USA, and TTD's Introducing the Hardline.
-
OMG! "Obsession" -- after hearing this for the first time in ages at the BBQ Saturday. Is Dave psychic? (Or did he hear it on 95.7 MAX?)
this is Animotion, but didn't someone else do this too?

I'd nominate Robbie Robertson's first solo record (the one with Showdown at Big Sky). Also the Replacements Let It Be, or maybe Tim. And Peter Gabriel's fourth album (the one that's become known as Security).

Skylarking, XTC
Speaking in Tongues, TH

Wow, we're four songs in, and nothing has made me think "Oh god, not this again." That's a good sign.
Expecting we'll hear John Fogerty before long tho.
-
it's days like this that remind me of how out of touch I am with much of what you young'uns listen to. I appreciate getting to hang around, but don't have much to add, having never heard Animotion before!

(Or did he hear it on 95.7 MAX?)
Listened to the Max onthe drive home last night. Impressive And-Now-For-Something-Completely-Different set list.
Pearl Jam - [unsure of the title]
Beatles - "Birthday"
Corey Hart - "Sunglasses At Night"
[long, very long commercial break]
Blues Traveler - "Run Around"
War - "Why Can't We Be Friends?"
Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes - "If You Don't Know Me By Now"
Duane Allman - "Midnight Rider"
-
Skylarking, XTC
Speaking in Tongues, TH
Both excellent calls--I agree completely.
Will have to submit Paul Simon's Graceland, as well. As overplayed as several of its songs have become, it completely captivated my listening in 86-87.

indeed, their commercial sets are f***ing ENDLESS. And they are very hit-n-miss. I listened most of yesterday afternoon and didn't hear anythinga s interesting as the set you posted. Maybe they're better at night -- the other nnight I heard Raydio's "You can't Change That" and John Cafferty's "The Dark Side" back-to-back.
oh, the inevitability of Huey...
-
WTF? Anyone know who this is after Huey?
-
Duane Allman - "Midnight Rider"
I presume it could have been ABB or Gregg Allman; don't think Duane ever did it solo. Great song.
-
What's this in the #7 slot (post-Huey)? It's not bad but I don't know it ("Baby's eyes are making me ready..."). Sounds vaguely like the Tubes but I think that could be just typical of that era.

Graceland & Speaking in Tongues were in the top 5 when Rolling Stone made a list, which was topped by London Calling. But Irish Greg already said something about it being released in 1979 (on 12/14), so I wonder if they will exclude it (silly if you ask me).

sorry, typing too fast.

was "Where's the Beef" still around in '85? It was the hot catchphrase of 1984... even Mondale used it in the campaign. Which was pretty much the end of it's run, I recall.
-
VHM "Sea of Love", an '84/'85 overlapper.
-
Someday, I'd like to hear "Young Boy Blues" from the same EP...
-
WOS "Lavender". Dude, it's bad Prog Rock!

Even I think this is bad Prog rock, and I generally like Prog rock!
-
BOS#3 - John Mellencamp "Minutes To Memories"
-
BOS JCM "MTM". here's an album for yer Best o' the '80s list fer sure!
I'd also include Steve Earle's Copperhead Road on that list.

But I dig Copperhead Road!

To answer my own question...
It was written by Holly Knight, one of the most successful female songwriters of the '80s (take THAT, Diane Warren). She wrote "Better Be Good to Me" and "The Best" for Tina, "Love is a Battlefield" for Pat B, and "RagDoll" for Aerosmith -- the list goes on. Her band, Spider, may have done it first, or maybe she did it solo (she wrote "Obsession" with Michael DesBarres). I do remember hearing a different version some time before Animotion came along.

Got home tonite just in time for the replay (saw the Danish movie, Brothers which I highly recommend). Listening to the Birthday Club greetings, I note that Dave wished a happy B-Day to "Jeff Garcia in San Jose". Surely not THAT Jeff Garcia...
