Title: 28 September 2009--it's...1967!
Post by: urth on September 28, 2009, 10:03:35 AM
Completely different time, she says.

Yeah, '67 qualifies.

Hope Geoff is having a prep period. His mind will be justifiably blown. One from the Dead's first album, but I'm not coming up with the title right off.

Some major psychedelia from the GD, and a song that's NTM.

Keep on trippin' with Peter Fonda and Cream.  BOS for "Tales of Brave Ulysses".

A quick peek at the vinyl, and guessing that must have been Cream Puff War. I'm at least relatively familiar with the rest of the songs on their debut record.

I think Gerry and Carole had a good grasp on what the audience wanted to hear, regardless of their bank balance.

O.M.G. Uber-BOS, the Kinks magnum opus, Waterloo Sunset. If ever a song evoked London in my mind, this is the one.

I'm curious: How many folks here actually do cast votes?

As you probably surmised, I do regularly. Used YM during the Dave era, and nowadays I do it via e-mail. As they say, if ya don't vote, you can't bitch. I think Mark does, too, although not sure by what means.

oops! Daryl, I was trying to move your Meg Whitman post to the politics thread so I could reply to it and I somehow deleted it. Damn.  Anyways, I'm really hoping the Dems have a GOOD guv candidate to run against her.  I voted against Ah-nuld -- twice -- but I was not at all pleased with Phil Angelides. He was a TERRIBLE candidate. Ah-nuld's poll numbers were in the toilet 6 months before that election -- anybody halfway decent coulda  beat him.

HA!  OMG, on local news Friday, I think they showed her giving a speech at a local company that did solar panel installation/manufacturing or something.  And while there giving a speech to employees (and media), she proclaimed that CA's "green jobs" bill was a mistake, and that many jobs will be lost because of it.

Awesome.

When the reporter called her on it, she brushed him off with a "yes, these jobs (solar) are good, but AB-whatver is not the right way to increase them or something".  He pushed further, and she gave this *incredibly* condescending/cutesy smile/grimace and said, "Sorry, I've got to go, thank you for your question."  Made me want to punch her in the face.  Holy crap.  Let me find the video...

A while ago Mike had a link to the All-Time UK singles list, and this was #1.  So aparently a whole lot of actual Londoners agree with you.

9/28/09 - Monday...  Back to...1967!!

   1.  Grateful Dead - Cream Puff War
(Movie:  The Trip)
   2.  Cream - Tales of Brave Ulysses
   3.  Pink Floyd - See Emily Play
(Ad:  Swinging Francie Barbie)
   4.  The Bar-Kays - Soul Finger
   5.  The Byrds - So You Want to Be a Rock & Roll Star
   6.  The Grass Roots - Live For Today
   7.  The Monkees - Pleasant Valley Sunday
(News:  LBJ/Ford - tax hike)
   8.  Kinks - Waterloo Sunset (BOS)
   9.  Jimi Hendrix Experience - May This Be Love
  10.  Beatles - Within You Without You

BONUS TRACK:  Bobbie Gentry - Ode to Billie Joe

Holy flaming mother of pop: the Bonus was Bobbie Gentry!!  and that desciption above of "Swinging Francie Barbie"  is incorrect -- Francie and Barbie were completely diff dolls (made by diff companies, iirc). Barbie's best friend was Midge, as anyone over 50 will remember.

ETA: turns out Mattell made both dolls -- but Francie was indeed diff from Barbie (she was supposed to be Barbie's "Mod" cousin, or something) and was nowhere near as popular.

Is this Jimi?  "Waterfall"?  New to me.

Have you never seen Singles?  Esp. with your love for Seattle I'd have thought you must have at some point.  It's on the soundtrack album.

There's a scene where Campbell Scott is playing records for Kyra Sedgwick in his apt., and when she admits little or no knowledge of Jimi, he says, "You have to listen to this," and then plays this cut 'live' in the film.

Later in that scene Jane's Addiction's "Three Days" can be heard, but I guess it was too long for the soundtrack, too bad.

I confess that I haven't seen Singles.  And my love for Seattle is really only based on ... 4-5 trips taken to Bumbershoot for only 3-4 days max.  And we typically only stay/explore around the Seattle Center where the festival is based.  Oh wait -- we also walked or took the monorail to/from Pike Place on various occasion, of course.

Should we go back and stay longer or see other things?  Absolutely yes.  Do I really really want to see Storm Large some day live?  Hells yes.  Will this probably not happen if we have two kids in tow?  Well, I do have a family friend up there that could probably babysit.
