Ha! I heard it yesterday on Barry Scott's Top 100 "Lost 45s" special. So 2 days in a row would be beyond hellish.

Same here, though he seems eminently likable. I think that "Old Time Rock and Roll" kind of soured me on him. A little too self-aware.
-
OK, I officially demand a moratorium on "Why can't We Be 'Trinas?" -- didn't AL just play this in a VT recently? Sheesh.

I never liked bob seeger... dunno why
I feel the same way about War.

Maybe it's the toy piano, poorly played. Instrumental giants, they're not.

er
I knew I'd heard it somewhere recently, and yeah, enough's enough. Always think of Richard Linklater's superb Dazed and Confused when I hear this one.

How sweet this set is.

That's the one I thought for sure would generate the Quiz question that day, as it's name-dropped in the current DMB hit.

I completely understand where Gaz is coming from
It's like Jelly, baby?? huh...

EJ always good but I've been hearing a bit too much of him via the Band.
No desire to see him with Mr Joel coming soon to a town near you.
-
BOS #2 Elton rollin' 'round his basement floor.
and as far as the Db is concerned this is a bustout, ta boot.
ETA: in fact, the Db has no entries from this *entire album*

indeed, AL needs to bust out a bustout, pronto (tho' I'm sure someone will tell me Dave never played this EJ tune)
-
Just got chills when EJ sang about going "to the little room downstairs." That's how my mother-in-law referred to death. (Could she have copped that from this song? Hmmm.) There really are no coincidences.

Bwahahaha! beat me to it! I'm stunned, actually, but bustout or not, it isn't what I had in mind.
*someone* played it recently, 'cause I remember posting a picture of a muscular "sugar bear".

wow, really..? I've always loved this song, it's epic. I never really understood what it was truly about until years later, of course.

I would never have considered that a metaphor for death, until now. But I think it works quite well, and if I ever write a novel I think I'll find a way to use that.
Give Annalisa props for a new Fall of Saigon clip & a new NYC bankruptcy clip as well.
ETA: and both led into some pretty good segues, the 'Oo & the Dan repsectively.

Well, duh. BOS - SD.

-
Well, duh. BOS - SD.
Ya ya! And I just got tickets for Steely Dan's "Aja" show next month. I really wanted to go to the "Royal Scam" show, but too much was already happening on that day.
-
Funny to hear a Dan song besides Black Friday after the NYC Bankruptcy clip. I just assumed that was what this was, then listened again and realized it was "Daddy Don't Live..." Now if the Dan were playing Katy Lied front to back I'd be there in a second. BOS3.
OMG. BOS4 Roxy. Both Ends Burning has to be the uber-BOS for the day.

BOS#2: Roxy!

Hey, it's a POC twin-spin! BOS for "Both Ends Burning". Sounding very Bowie-esque on this one, Station to Station style.

there's a piece in Rolling Stone about how SD was going charge more for these "album" shows. They know their true fans will pay, they'll LOVE seeing the entire album perf'd.

I gotta give Foghat a BOS, just because.

BOS for Ricardo's "Cornithian Leather". :D In an interview they asked him what that was. He said something to the effect of "I have no idea", or it doesn't mean anything. I'd like to hear that again.

I'm On Fire is one of those songs that Dave introduced me to. (I think the technical term is "Naruda," but it's a personal Naruda that reflects more about me and my listening habits back then than the culture's at large.) I feel for those see its Katrina-ness, but every time I hear it I am thankful...
:)

woooo hoooo FOGHAT!
BOS
One more from the Dazed and Confused soundtrack. VHM to Hogfat. Saw 'em at the Cow Palace around '78 or so. Meh. The Outlaws opened--they were far better.

If you dig back far enough in the RIP thread, I know we discussed how one of his obits included him discussing having ad-libbed that on the spot while filming the commercial. It is indeed meaningless.

"The band's namesake was Junior Foghat, an imaginary friend of Dave Peverett's childhood"
Well, OK then!
I've always liked the Brit pronunciation, more like "foggit", which I always thought was a clever way of saying "fuck it" without actually saying "fuck".
-
AL just pronounced "Excellent" in her Mr Burns voice!

At least it's got a perfect record, BOS-wise. Just checked back thru the last 3.5 months--this is only our second trip to '75 in the Annalisa Era. Which equals only 4 or 5 sets a year. Not good.

well, yes, but with the new "rotation" , *every* year is destined to appear only 4 or 5 times a year. To get more '64s and '65s you gotta accept less '73s or '85s (as well as more Nineties overall).

btw, the SF Bay Guardian collected some writings on Roxy Music for one of their "Noise" issues a while back -- not sure if any of you Roxy fans saw it -- but you can read it on http://www.manzanera.com/RoxyArchive/RoxyMusicTour2001/interviews22.htm
excerpt:
.... A staple of Detroit's mid-'70s FM radio, Siren was so popular in the Motor City that one of the most requested songs was one never released as a single, "Both Ends Burning." It's the sexiest of all Roxy tunes ("Who can sleep / In this heat / This night?").
Maybe you have to be immersed in Motown to appreciate "Both Ends Burning" 's danceable, rocksteady lunge and flow, but it made people feel romantic while staying conscious of their randiest impulses. Lust with swirling strings spoke the common language of palpable desire. That's a pop victory. ....
some good stuff.

it made people feel romantic while staying conscious of their randiest impulses. Lust with swirling strings spoke the common language of palpable desire
In 1991 & 1992, my discussion group classes at UCSB for the History of American Pop Culture agreed by an overwhelming majority, male & female students alike, that this was exactly why you played the Avalon album if you wanted to get laid.
-
I never liked bob seeger... dunno why

This is absolutely true. I've had similar discussions with friends back when we were single, and the consensus was that if you were hanging out with a member of the opposite sex but not sure which way things were going, if you could get Avalon on the turntable (later, CD player), you were in like Flynn. A guy's secret weapon--women are powerless to resist it.
