Same here, though he seems eminently likable.  I think that "Old Time Rock and Roll" kind of soured me on him.  A little too self-aware.

Just got chills when EJ sang about going "to the little room downstairs." That's how my mother-in-law referred to death. (Could she have copped that from this song? Hmmm.) There really are no coincidences.

I would never have considered that a metaphor for death, until now.  But I think it works quite well, and if I ever write a novel I think I'll find a way to use that.

Give Annalisa props for a new Fall of Saigon clip & a new NYC bankruptcy clip as well.

Funny to hear a Dan song besides Black Friday after the NYC Bankruptcy clip. I just assumed that was what this was, then listened again and realized it was "Daddy Don't Live..."  Now if the Dan were playing Katy Lied front to back I'd be there in a second. BOS3.

I'm On Fire is one of those songs that Dave introduced me to.  (I think the technical term is "Naruda," but it's a personal Naruda that reflects more about me and my listening habits back then than the culture's at large.)   I feel for those see its Katrina-ness, but every time I hear it I am thankful...

If you're gonna have a slow ride, you want the loooooooong version, doncha?

Exactly! The song doesn't even get turned on until the end.

woooo hoooo FOGHAT!
BOS

One more from the Dazed and Confused soundtrack. VHM to Hogfat. Saw 'em at the Cow Palace around '78 or so. Meh. The Outlaws opened--they were far better.

"The band's namesake was Junior Foghat, an imaginary friend of Dave Peverett's childhood"

Well, OK then!

I've always liked the Brit pronunciation, more like "foggit", which I always thought was a clever way of saying "fuck it" without actually saying "fuck".

BOS4 Roxy -- a bustout, I'm assuming.

nope, Dave played it once 5 yrs ago, and it was BOS that day.

I gotta give Foghat a BOS, just because.

At least it's got a perfect record, BOS-wise.   Just checked back thru the last 3.5 months--this is only our second trip to '75 in the Annalisa Era. Which equals only 4 or 5 sets a year.  Not good.

well, yes, but with the new "rotation" , *every* year is destined to appear only 4 or 5 times a year. To get more '64s and '65s you gotta accept less '73s or '85s (as well as more Nineties overall).

...no BOS indicated on the website

it was Roxy Music, I believe...

btw, the SF Bay Guardian collected some writings on Roxy Music for one of their "Noise" issues a while back -- not sure if any of you Roxy fans saw it -- but you can read it on http://www.manzanera.com/RoxyArchive/RoxyMusicTour2001/interviews22.htm

excerpt:

.... A staple of Detroit's mid-'70s FM radio, Siren was so popular in the Motor City that one of the most requested songs was one never released as a single, "Both Ends Burning." It's the sexiest of all Roxy tunes ("Who can sleep / In this heat / This night?").

Maybe you have to be immersed in Motown to appreciate "Both Ends Burning" 's danceable, rocksteady lunge and flow, but it made people feel romantic while staying conscious of their randiest impulses. Lust with swirling strings spoke the common language of palpable desire. That's a pop victory. ....

some good stuff.

In 1991 & 1992, my discussion group classes at UCSB for the History of American Pop Culture agreed by an overwhelming majority, male & female students alike, that this was exactly why you played the Avalon album if you wanted to get laid.

I never liked bob seeger... dunno why

I feel the same way about War.

Isn't that the definition of a Guilty Displeasure?

This is absolutely true. I've had similar discussions with friends back when we were single, and the consensus was that if you were hanging out with a member of the opposite sex but not sure which way things were going, if you could get Avalon on the turntable (later, CD player), you were in like Flynn. A guy's secret weapon--women are powerless to resist it.

Hmm. Except I don't feel guilty about it.

It's that sexy voice. Again.
