AL drives south with Hiatt.
-
anyone besides me try to listen via radio broadcast in the 20 minutes before the set? I was in my car & as far as I could tell KFOG was off air from at least 9:38-9:54. Not even static. Came inside, fired up the laptop & all seems to be well on the stream.
-
BOSFRA: ZZT, "Party on the Patio" -- can I predict that "Twistin' by the Pool" will follow?

Still off I think.

No idea, but the stream is working. Which is weird if not downright implausible.

VHM to the "Good Times" theme, even if present day hardly feels like good times.

Same here. The radio, both 104.5 and 97.7, are still not working.
-
LAWD! VHM Good Times, followed by Chic's "Good Times". Clams on the half-a-shell!

Glad I'm on the stream. We had ZZ Top follow the Hiatt, Party On The Patio. OK, but wasn't a big fan back in the day, and still not--they've done better.
Now we're hearing the theme to Good Times, followed by the Chic tune of the same name.
Anyone else thinking this theme is kinda on the lame side?

actually quite plausible -- they're in the studio doing the show, it's going directly to the web. It's the connection to the transmitter that's f---ed up.
-
I was distracted by the radio being off air, but can anyone explain to me exactly how the Hiatt tune qualified to kick off this set?

Dave did a similar thing on a couple occasions ("here comes the weekend", or "party weekend" or somesuch). She needed a theme set, and Moday (presumably) we'll get the tradiional "work songs" set.

"it's a long weekend and we're drivin' south."

I am working from home, listening on TV -- channel 984, and all is well. I just turned my clock radio on -- nada. And then I started tuning down the dial -- no fm reception at all! Will go try my stereo later...

Does flyin' south count? I gotta leave for the airport in about 10 minutes...

wth? I can't get the stream. Geoof, how do you stream on a mac? I'm hesitant to downlaod stuff.

make sure your cab driver (when you get here) avoids the Bay Bridge!

Hoping to hear a goofy song that Dave used to play once upon a time: "It's a party / It's a party party / A party party weekend."
-
WOS to Wang Chung and one of the dumbest songs ever written. >:(

VHM Frasier quoting Wang Chung -- one of my favorite Cheers moments ever.

gonna be some rock 'n' rollin'!

Quick, how many other self-referential songs can we name before "Everybody Have Fun Tonight" ends?

I don't think he'll have a choice! (But I'm planning on being in Marin and SF pretty much exclusively, so it's Doyle Drive and 101 backups for me!)

Steely Dan - "Show Biz Kids"
Pink Floyd - "Have A Cigar"
Atlanta Rhythm Section - "Large Time" (whcih I'd never have remembered except my Zune coughed it up while I was walking the dog this morning.)

I was just listening to that this week!
Ton of rap songs fit this, as does Fergie's "Fergalicious."
-
uh-oh -- Todd's bangin' and everybody (except me) is WOS'n

no, I mean songs that in some way refer to themselves, not songs the bands named themselves after. A fine distinction I admit.

rap and self-referentiality are practically synonymous, yo.

Not me, if only because given the chance I'd be doing a lot worse to my boss' head. I also think the bass solo is under-appreciated.
-
The Sound is playing Bang on the Drum right now, too.

at least neither song contains the line "I'm givin' you my bestest" ;)
-
Heeeeheheheeehehahahaa! Wipe Out BOS!!!!
-
I can't recall the movie, but somewhere out there there's a movie line that goes something like, "my five year old nephew is really smart, he knows all the words to 'Wipeout'."

how about Jigsaw Puzzle by the Rolling Stones?
Oh the singer, he looks angry
At being thrown to the lions
And the bass player, he looks nervous
About the girls outside
And the drummer, he's so shattered
Trying to keep up time
And the guitar players look damaged
They've been outcasts all thier lives

I heard the Fat Boys + Beach Boys' "Wipeout" last week. Ugh. ::)
-
best song about California written by non-Californians!
-
I almost have to give this a WOS just because of the repetitive Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk ads, but instead I'll say BOSFRA.
-
uber BOS Ramones!!!!!!!
-
back in 8th grade, I had a friend who was a drummer. He had those "Music Minus One for Drums" albums to practice with: you put the record on and you hear the song minus your instrument's sounds, which you provide. pretty neat.
My favorite track on that LP was Wipeout!
-
This is not my kind of party.
-
BOS2 Ramones!

Me too. I still love this song. It may be simple but I guess I have simple tastes. :-) It rocks...

WOO HOO! "Song 2" becomes another potential AL-trina! BOS3
-
uh, AL... it's Labor Day, not the 4th of July.
-
anyone recall that sorta novelty punky song that had the line "Go to a party, act like an a**hole?"
how about it AL?
ETA: I found it! it's called Go To A Party it's by The Fems:

I couldn't tell you what ANY of the lyrics are, except for "It's not my PROB-LUHM" and "Woo-hoo."

damn you're in a contrarian mood today!

I got my head checked
By a jumbo jet
It wasnt easy
But nothing is, no
When I feel heavy metal
And Im pins and Im needles
Well I lie and Im easy
All of the time but Im never sure when I need you
Pleased to meet you
I got my head done
When I was young
Its not my problem
Its not my problem
When I feel heavy metal
And Im pins and Im needles
Well I lie and Im easy
All of the time but Im never sure when I need you
Pleased to meet you
Yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah
Oh.... shit!

Ditto. Besides, "everyday's the 4th of July".

Well, thanks, but I'd already looked them up for myself. I wanted to know what anyone *thought* the opening lyric was.
I had it as "I got my head shaved by a ja-mo-che" and figured that a jamoche (sp?) was some sort of LA slang that I was not hip to, but which Mr. Alborn was using for ironic effect.

I haven't confirmed it, but perhaps it was Hollywood Knights (1980), the PG-13 missing link between American Graffiti and Porky's. Not well-known, but this was the film debut of Robert 'Arli$$' Wuhl, as the main character, along with Tony Danza (in the middle of his Taxi run) & a very early role for Fran Drescher* (who is in my top 3 Most Annoying People in the World). And it was also Michelle Pfeiffer's film debut, in a supporting role.
*For 10 Frink points, what Oscar-nominated film was her debut?

Joe "King" Carrasco RULES! He was a cult fave on '80s NYC alternative radio. "Caca de Vaca" (yes, that translates as "cow shit") was quite popular back in the day.

I was distracted by the radio being off air, but can anyone explain to me exactly how the Hiatt tune qualified to kick off this set?
I agree with you here. AL doesn't seem to be too good with TOTHC's. Then again, maybe she's not trying to be. (I like John Hiat well enough, but he's not the first that comes to mind when I think of "party.") Maybe she's trying to build excitement...and to be fair she's done a pertty good job of that in most of her sets.
Hearing the theme I fully expected the set to suck but I was pleasantly surprised. Hiatt, ZZ Top, Chic, Wang Chung, Blur...good stuff.

no one guessed at it, but Drescher debuted in Saturday Night Fever.

Somehow I don't think of "Oscar-nominated" when I think of SNF.

it was a great movie, very edgy.
