Sounds like we get to hear the whole set today anyway, instead of commercials ad nauseam.
One of my most dreaded years in the Morey era. Let's see what AL can do with it.
Hrm. .38 Special. Not an auspicious start.
-
caught up in (eighty)two. WOS '38 not-so-special. '88 remains MIA.
-

really? worse than '87 or '89? why is that? it's, like, NewWave Central!
-
<Church Lady Voice> Well, isn't that .38 Special?</Church Lady Voice>
not into this song
-
VHM Huey and his huge, er, well, you know.
-
we need some new wave!

Three words: Men. At. Work.
Also it tended to come up on the wheel far more often than the later 80s years. I seem to recall that for several years '82 was the most frequently occuring year.
-

Totallly different heads. Blue ones, actually!

-
well, here's yer Simple-Minded New Wave!
-
The Evil Smurf Gargamel sounds little like Linda Blair in The Excorcist
VHM to this ... Simple Minds?
-
HM to Simple Minds, but I'm holding out hope for either "Just Got Lucky" or "I'm Still Standing."
-
HM to Simple Minds, but I'm holding out hope for either "Just Got Lucky" or "I'm Still Standing."
or "I'm Lucky to Still Be Standing".
Now I see urth's point: "Hold Me" is a major Moreytrina from this year.
-
Who's responsible for the wheezy smack sound that punctuates the verse? Who's smacking who in this band?
silly song, but I like it

Only thing of any note so far was the Simple Minds. The .38 Special was a bustout (Dave only ever played Hold On Loosely) but it was still .38 Special, i.e. shitty.
-
VHM Gere & Winger. Damn, I was *SO* hoping for "Up Where We Belong" ;)
another Moreytrina: Ultravox.
-
eff yeah, beeyotches!
Reap this! :P ;)
eta: yeah, Morey did play this a lot. He also played Vienna (different year, though, I think), but I'll give BOS to this. Bought it on cassette, but the rest of the album was weak.
-
Since Dave's gone, we've missed the Ocaseksation.
-

Yep. Dave used to play it in '83 rather than '82, but it's got 8 appearances in the DB, which makes it close to a K if not one officially.
And now we get the Cars--is AL purposely trying to grate on our nerves? If so she's doing a really good job.
-
Wow, what a great year. Takes me back to high school.
-

Indeed. Minus 10 points for the "mess/sensu-ess" rhyme, Ric.
-
A good span for a few years for SNL! IMHO.
Poor Buckwheat!
-

this made me laugh...! she's not hitting on all cylinders today, is she?
-
This was one of my favorite years from the Dave era. New wave central indeed!
OMG! My favorite song by my favorite band...Someone Somewhere in Summertime! ;D (Barely edging out See the Lights.) BOS of the year.
VHM to Ultravox.
Going against public opinion...BOS2 to the Cars ;) I agree most of their songs are kinda annoying but this is one of their better ones IMO (Along with Tonight She Comes & Heartbeat City)
-
Wow, what a great year. Takes me back to high school.
careful, Steve-o! You might be in the minority here! :)
-
This is not getting any better, is it?
Uber-WOS, Laura Branigan. We're getting a full dose of cheese today, eh?
-
Gloria!
Alleluia! BOS! Only time I'll ever give BOS to a Diane Warren song.
PS: There were many who thought Pulp's "Common People" borrowed liberally from this riff.
-
Somebody please make it ("Gloria") stop!
>:(
-
the "shooting of Buckwheat" bit was from '81, no? Because I remember it was a parody of Lennon/Reagan shootings and I thought "damn, it's too soon"
OMFG!!! "Gloria"!!! uber-BOS!!!
-
A good span for a few years for SNL! IMHO.
Poor Buckwheat!
I thought that was really not funny. Can't compare to "Wookin Pa Nub" anyway.
-
Too bad Eddie Murphy's success went to Joe Piscopo's head!
(that quip's not mine, btw, but I love it..!
-

it's an Italian song -- did Warren do the translation?
-
Uber-WOS, Laura Branigan. We're getting a full dose of cheese today, eh?
wildly divergent views here -- one of the great pop singles of the decade, IMHO, not to mention one killer Donna Summer imitation.
-
VHM to Laura Branigan, if only b/c an ex liked her.
-
Quick recovery! Easy BOS to X!
-

Yeah. Joe Piscopo. He was hilarious ... for about 15 minutes in the 80's.
-
Even though I can barely make out the lyrics, BOS3 to X.
-
Now here's a real BOS for ya, X's "Blue Spark".
-
BOSX

BOS2FRA
-
code name? AWESOME!
-
WOS2 Aldo Nova -- this really has been pretty cheezy today, and not in a good way.
-

Aww...but cheez is always good!
Aldo Nova used to annoy me, but now I like it for what it is. VHM2.
And BOS4 for Duran Duran!
-
WOS2 Aldo Nova -- this really has been pretty cheezy today, and not in a good way.
Yah, I never liked this one, much preferring the somewhat similar "Ah, Leah!".
-
BOS3 the Durannies, "Rio".
-
10:40 a.m. and still no mention of the Falklands War or the Unabomber.
I sure do remember those big events from '82
oh, and of course that's when Michael Jackson (code name 'Molesta') released Thriller.
-
Gloria!
Alleluia! BOS! Only time I'll ever give BOS to a Diane Warren song.

Oops, my bad: Warren wrote "Solitaire," not "Gloria."
-
BOS3 the Durannies, "Rio".
I like "Rio"; it's got some great bass work in there.
-
ooo! instrumentals tomorrow -- "Wordless Wednesday", tee hee.

John Taylor is hot. plays a good bass, too

Thanks Mike!
The 1982 set inspired me.

This may have been the most Morey-like set Annalisa's done in the 2 1/2 months she's been on the job. Even the bonus track was a Dave fave (and probably a bigger K than anything else she played): Talk Talk by (of course) Talk Talk.
Oh, and a quick note of welcome to the two "new guys" here--always good to get some fresh blood in the conversation, and having a couple of 80s fans will liven things up here for sure.

Yesterday's set was also kinda Dave-ish (except for the welcome Mink DeVille bustout). I hope the suits haven't been on AL's case for being too obscure. The instrumental set tomorrow will be interesting. I sent her some never-played-by-Dave suggestions:
Herbie Hancock: "Rockit"
Harold Faltermeyer: "Axel F" (from "Beverly Hills Cop")
Focus: "Sylvia"
They Might Be Giants: "Dog on Fire" (aka the closing theme from "The Daily Show" -- not sure how hard that is to find)
Mike Post, "Hill Street Blues"

I made a suggestion as well, one that Dave played just once, but I'm keepin' it a secret until tomorrow.

Now THAT'S what AHM talkin' 'bout! "Gloria" rules. I remember being in my car one evening in '82 and hearing it for the first time and thinking "Awesome! a new Donna Summer single!" And then the jock said it was Laura Branigan and I said "Laura who??" -- I was stunned that it wasn't Ms. Summer.

There is a Katrina from I believe 1982 that for the longest time I thought was Branigan but was in fact Summer.
