a rare visit to '95. We still haven't hit '96 this year.
-
is this the lemonheads or the blossoms?
-
So the Gin Blossoms' "Til I Hear It From You" is the TOTHC, then? I'll give it BOS, it's a lovely song and the band's output holds up nicely. They brought the tambourine back into focus, too!
-
P.S. I still don't know anyone who saw Empire Records, the film this tune came from.
HM to "Hook," which we all should have seen coming. When I think of '95, I think of Blues Traveler pretty quickly, along with Sophie B. Hawkins' "As I Lay Me Down" and Martin Page's "In the House of Stone and Light."
-
ohmigodcatherine. i love your avatar, gaz.
"jam tomorrow, jam yesterday, but never, ever jam today."
i don't think anyone will get that reference. unless you've seen the "alice in wonderland" musical i love so dearly.

There's potential for some interesting stuff in this set (Jayhawks & Son Volt both released their best records this year, also early Wilco, but not their best.) Who knows if we'll actually hear any of those or not.
Sorry, Blues Traveler doesn't fall into my "interesting stuff" category.
-
with their dog apres la guerre
Rene et George Magritte, n'est-ce pas?
-
Heh- wasn't Blues Traveler the Kaboom band we completely ignored that one year?
Beej: Is Blues Traveler still playing?!

yes, indeedy, miss macready.

Ayup! I remember barely recognizing the slimmed-down John Popper.
BOS2 to "Legalize Our Love," which I majorly shouted out in my EMP speech.

All I'll say is at least it wasn't "RunAround". '95 makes me think of "A Girl Like You" (also from Empire Records, no?) and another great sndtk, Clueless -- would that Dave would play the Smoking Popes "Need You Around".
-
I took a quick glance thru the Top 40 Hits site list for 95 and didn't see a lot that would be likely to show up here--mostly stuff along the lines of Rembrandts, REM, Petty, Bonnie Raitt, or god forbid, Hootie.

C'est correct. That album is the '90s poster child for great soundtracks to less-than-great movies.
Eek! Collective Lack Of Soul!

yeah, i was glad it wasn't that other song, either.
what was that dancing song from "clueless?" "where my homies at?" or something like that? something the characters were singing at a party...
-
while I don't care for a lot of 1995 music, it was a very important year for me. On the day of the OKC bombing, I was meeting in a house that used to be Bill Graham's Masada, and agreeing to sell my company.
Later that year, Jerry Garcia died, which had huge financial impacts on me, ironically positive, which made me feel pretty weird.

I'm sure we'll hear Hootie, and I'd LOVE to hear "I'll Be There For You" by the 'brandts -- THE most-played song of the year, radio-wise.
I guess "Legalize our Love" precludes us hearing "I Kissed a Girl"?

better than reality bites?

Ooh. Nice call. I stand corrected.
Glad you like Carol on the decks, too.

VHM Nick Cage in Leaving Las Vegas.

I remember the OKC bombing very well -- I had just finished defending my senior thesis a day or two prior, and was sitting in the on-campus cafe watching the news on CNN. I remember everyone assuming it was foreign terrorists.
Was it '95 that Jerry died? I associate that with '96 since when I moved to SF in September '96 and started hanging out in the Haight, Jerry memorials were still all over the place.

Indeed, though such a difficult movie to make it through.
I wonder if that segue was Dave's way of thanking Sheryl for killing the author of LLV?

Yes, 8/9/95. The official GD Calendars are missing the 9 in their August page; it's blank. I was at my guitar company (still) that day, meeting with the bass player from Megadeath (real nice guy) but I had to bug out to my new office. The chat rooms had exploded, and I had to be there, so I left Dave, who understood, and left.
-
i was falling asleep. but is this aimee mann?
-
I know not *every* Dave segue means something, but OJ's not guilty into Heather Nova's "Walk This World"?

she's walking the world, looking for the "real killers".

Best Name of Set
-
i'll bos ms. faris. it's a fun song, but believe me - she has waaaaaaaay more up her sleeve. it's just that commrad wasn't interested.
-
This set doesn't suck nearly as much as I feared. BOS for Dion Ferris (excuse speeling errors). This song has a great sound, doncha think?
-
Heather Nova loses the subtlety sweepstakes!
"I want you to COME! I want you to COME!"
Meanwhile, VHM to Dionne Farris's "I Know"; what I *don't* know is why she never had another album (or indeed, another single) promoted as heavily as this one. This song should be more fondly remembered.

LOL!!!
Allegedly, the author of the book Leaving Las Vegas, which hadn't yet reaped him any reward, was incensed by Sheryl's song of the same name, claiming she stole his ideas. When she appeared on (Letterman?) and disingenuously claimed the creation as hers-all-hers, it was allegedly one of the last straws before he committed suicide.
Apologies for misremembering any details.
And W-O-S x infinity to Deep Blue Something's "Breakfast at Tiffany's," one of the emptiest songs I have ever heard in my life.

she had one more hit single from a different album: "penny with a hole in it" or "hopeless." something like that...
-
ah, "Breakfast At Tiffany's". If all you got in common is one 40-year-old movie...

Thereby blazing a trail for Norah Jones.
Eeewww, WOS to Breakfast at Tiffany's. Never liked this song.

Oh, maaan. Brutal. Thanks for filling me in, though.

A-freaking-men, Willis.

A friend of mine was the bass player in the Tuesday Night Music Club, and also feels somewhat abused by Ms. Crow, which is understandable.

I thought it was one of the songwriter/musicians from her debut album who killed himself? Not the author of the book.

I think we should rotate the 10@10 Club logo, and Beej seems pretty facile w/Photoshop. Wanna send me something the same size as this?:

ah, "Breakfast At Tiffany's". If all you got in common is one 40-year-old movie...
And an over-rated one at that. I mean- sure, Audrey Hepburn was lovely and looked cute in the capri-pants and all. But, I'm just not that entranced by the movie. And Mickey Rooney's just painful to watch.
Being Patricia Neal's rent-boy wouldn't be bad, though.

now you're talkin', brother. less "cookie's fortune," more "hondo," though.

Great scene in Dragon, the Bruce lee biopic, where he and his date are at the movies in 1962 watching BAT and we see his reaction to Rooney-as-Oriental.

Do you want me to make an animated gif or make the individual slides for you to make the gif? Either way.
Today's kinda busy, though. In addition to a full plate here at the Data Mine I have a rehearsal tonight. I'll try and knock something out by tomorrow morning.

I don't really care. To quote a line from "The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test,":
Art is not eternal!
So, if something better or different comes along, I'll switch again. 'Kind of Busy?' you have shown a lot of chops here, for someone so busy!
