Title: 27 July, 2009, it's Movie Monday
Post by: mshray on July 24, 2009, 10:05:39 AM
Annalisa talked abut this when she signed off yesterday afternoon.  The idea being basically film sledgehammers, e.g. "In Your Eyes" from Say Anything.

If you've ever seen Testament, the nuclear war flick from '83, you know that the Beatles' "All My Loving" is used in a way that made me cry buckets of tears, one of the few movies that has ever had that effect on me. A sledgehammer indeed.

Had the same effect on me, and many movie-goers I think. One of the most powerful films of the 80s, and it's barely remembered.

I was trying to stay in the movie genre, and also identify Dick Dale for those that weren't here at the beginning.  No special affection for DD

If AL plays "I've Had The Time of My Life", I'll give her MAJOR props for ballsiness.

but instead we get the entirely predictable Pretty in Pink sndtk.

BOS #3 "Mad World" from Donnie Darko.

ETA:  if they'd had the budget, they'd have paid TFF for the rights to use the original, but this worked out rather serendipitously for all concerned I think.

Do you mean to say that this version (Gary Joules) was created for the movie?  Interesting.

Just wondering about how to list things.  KFOG lists Misirlou as Dick Dale, and I always thought it was Dick Dale and the Del Tones.  Here's the IMDB data:

"Misirlou"
Written by Fred Wise, Milton Leeds, S.K. Russell, Nicholas Roubanis
Performed by Dick Dale and the Del Tones (as Dick Dale & His Del-Tones)

There's probably no other listings that would create confusion, right?  Has Dave ever played Dale's "Ghost Riders in the Sky?"

BOS to Gary Jules, just because I can.

Bwahahaha!  Good point -- "most appearances in theme sets" is something worth noting if they really deserve the award.

mike, your dream just came true ... in LA, that is.  Their set for today (8/3) seemed to be a movie themed set:

8/3 - 1991
Born to Be Wild - Steppenwolf
Pretty in Pink - Psychedelic Furs
Old Time R&R - Bob Seger
New Slang - The Shins
You Make My Dreams - Hall & Oats
Hold Me Thrill Me Kiss - U2
The End - Doors
In Your Eyes - Gabriel
Mrs. Robinson - Simon and Garfunkel
Eye of the Tiger - Survivor
