Wow, wasn't thinking we'd be this far back today...but yay!!
-
OK, which one of us axes our topic?
Rockford Files, not an auspicious start but at least it's out of the way early.

a fine TOTHC, IMHO, but then I'm a Post fan generally. Cue the Ambrosia! Or the 10cc...

Personally I'm hoping for Sweet's Little Willy, or maybe Third Rate Romance by Amazing Rhythm Aces.

"My music bores me once again." Not the ideal sentiment for your new single, sonny. Who's the Mungo he's reading about in SoHo? Mungo Jerry? The guy from Blazing Saddles?
-
OK, what the hell is this? I swear I don't think I've EVER heard this, in 1975 or since. Kinda like it, even tho the singer kinda reminds me of Jack Johnson.

well, "Little Willy" is '73 but the ARA's would be nice.
OMGWTFLOL!!! Brian Protheroe, "Pinball" -- a breakout and a song I didn't think ANYONE remembered. A Brit hit that went nowhere over here.
-
Mungo Jerry only pawn... in Game of Life....
-
Well after this you won't hear from me much for a week. Leaving in 2 hours for another whirlwind business trip, 4 days in Texas & Mexico, back for one day, and then a day & a half in Seattle.
Not a bad set for a send off though!

That song did nothing for me, and I'm afraid neither does this "why should I care" tune. A dangerously recurring theme. I'm going to pathetically hope for something from Carole King's Really Rosie soundtrack, like "Avenue P" or "Alligators All Around" or "Pierre."

Ack, I believe you're right. I think I was confusing it with Magic by Pilot, which was '75.
Hmmmm, My Little Town--is it a Katrina yet? Treading very close if it's not.
-
BOS to S&G's "My Little Town," which I never thought to apply to Southeast Asia, but there you have it.
-
Honorable Flashback to "In My Little Town".
-
BOS My Little Town

I second that. This was a reunion tune, wasn't it? S&G had already split up by 75, right?
-
btw, Gaz: great avatar!

You're exactly right. They'd split up by '72, but reconvened for this, which I think they performed on SNL as well (would have loved to have seen that). It appeared on both of their solo albums released that year.

BOS2: Gloria Gaynor, "Do it Yourself" Go girl!
(BOS 1 was "Pinball", I'm alone in liking that one apparently)

I liked it, but being as I have no history with it, not sure I could in good conscience pull the trigger on a BOS vote. I'm tempted to call it the ultimate Narada. A song almost no one remembers. (Good thing we've got you around Mike, otherwise we still wouldn't know who it was.)
-
Just my opinion, but I'm still waiting for the BOS ... haven't heard one yet.
-
BOS3: "Katmandu". Dave's more than making up for yesterday's Katrinafest with obscurities and breakouts!

I liked Pinball well enough, but I had no idea what it was.
-
OK, true confessions time. How many of you thought Bob Seger just made up the name Cat Man Doo? I'd certainly never heard of the real place.

One of my fondest memories of NYC "Prog" FM was the late great Scott Muni's "English Hour" -- Friday afternoons at 5 he'd play imports from that week's British charts. "Pinball" became a turntable hit as a result (and it only reached #22 in the UK) and I've always thought it was a great song. I've heard it on CG once or twice.

you're in deep Cat Man Doo Doo, my friend.
-
BOS the mighty ZEP!!!!!! This is better than S&G.
-
BOS2, "Trampled Underfoot," easily my favorite Led Zep song. I'm sure I heard this in 1976 when I was 3.

Dave, you must have been absent that day in Geography... :)

indeed, and a proxy for Rod.
One of the best '75 sets I've heard in ages.

has anyone tried a dance version of this? It would totally work.

OK, now I'm not sure...
The ABBA song is either BOS or WOS in my opinion...
-
Another BOS SOS
-
Wow, between the Zep tune, Kathmandu, and SOS, methinks it's gonna be a close race for the popular BOS vote.
My money's on ABBA.

You can do it! Pick one. No judgements made about your choice.
-
Another BOS SOS
really astounding that this only got to #15. palindromes rule!
-
HM to the "Can't Get Enough of Your Love" rewrite, "What Am I Gonna Do With You" (which, oddly, was his shortest song title of all his hits of the period).

I hear it instead as a mega-medley with "I'm a Man" and "Long Train Runnin'."

YAY ZEP BOS
-
Good set this time... nothing was really great IMO, but it all sounded good.
-
btw, Gaz: great avatar!
Thanks, Beej! I think she's shimply shmashing.
And according to AMG, Brian Protheroe's "Pinball" peaked at #60 in the US.

Zep is still bos.

smash-up that mash-up, my man!
I have a disco-diva version of "Long Train Runnin" from the early '90s (totally works), can't remember the woman's name. And of course "I'm a Man" was disco-fied in the '70s if memory serves. BoysTown Gang, maybe?

Me too.
Hasta la vista y'all. See you in about a week (though I may pop in at odd hours if I'm online & have time to kill).

Later, Mshray!

I was listening to Third Rate this morning. Just got a neat little power thingy for the car that plays the iPod thru the radio.
Please dish model, and if you're please with it.

Gimme a red-hot mama and an ice cold beer/And I can sorta get along Smiley Maxedon
I woke up the other morning with the name "Smiley Maxedon" on my lips, went to Google, and indeed it already existed. I didn't put two and two together until today, when I read Beej's sig.
too weird for me! The stress is piling up.

I wish I could send you the mp3 right now- but you'll have to wait until tomorrow morn! The song will make you smile. And want a beer. And a red hot mama. But, most importantly- it'll make you smile.
(I have an old computer. It runs on Windows 98SE. For some reason- I can't use any mp3-ripping software now that I've installed a CD burner. The software for my early-model mp3 player won't work anymore, either. So, I have to do all my mp3 ripping & player-loading here at work).

A few observations upon the replay:
WOS = "Kathmandu." The beginning of the end for Seger, as far as I'm concerned ("Still the Same" being a lovely aberration).
That "Pinball" song sounded a lot better tonight, perhaps because I'm in a better mood and so went in with different expectations.
And I find myself suddenly uncomfortable with how much I like "My Little Town." I abruptly realized this evening that the song's theme, when you get right down to it, is "Mom and Dad, you fucked up, why didn't I have nice things?" and that kind of bothers me. On the other hand, the opening notes are almost exactly the same as the opening of "Don't Go Breaking My Heart," so it's not all bad.
Lastly, kudos to Dave for at least two breakouts; I was doing something while Gloria G played the first time so I'm only now reacting to it.

I knew you'd like "Pinball" if you gave it a chance
I think "Little Town" is a bit broader than that; it's an indictment of small-town small-mindedness ("It's just imagination they lacked") and as such it's in the same vein as "Pleasant Valley Sunday" IMHO.

As you may have figured out last nite when you were listening more closely, it's "Monroe" (as in Marilyn, presumably), not "Mungo".
