Unless AL has a theme set on tap (maybe we get the "moon" thing today?), our choices today boil down to
1972
1973
1981
1983
1986
1988
1991
1996
1998

Holy smokes--a 60s vertical tasting! '60 to '69!
-
OMG! a '60s VT starting in 1960! AL, ah lurve you.
BOS Ventures!

kawabunga! has 10@10 ever gone back this far?

kawabunga! has 10@10 ever gone back this far?
Yup, Dave used to do "The 50's" now and then. Not my favorite, to be sure, but good for variation. It's been many years since the 50's turned up on the wheel.
-
kawabunga! has 10@10 ever gone back this far?
Not in my memory. I think back in the early days (early to mid 80s) it may have.
-

Dave did a '60s VT last year, iirc. And sets used to go back to the early '60s when 10@10 first started; Dave also used to do "'50s Fridays"
There was apparently a famous Dave segue in a '63 set: tape of the JFK shooting, someone asks what direction the shots came from and the Drifters sing "Up on the Roof"!
-
"Green Onions" is from 62? I had no idea.
-
Slight shocker: Del Shannon, Runaway is actually showing up on the player, as is Booker T & the MGs.
Green Onions is from '62? I thought it was more a mid-60s tune.
ETA: Yep, according to Whitburn it entered the charts on Sept 1, 1962. I'll be gah-damned.

two instrumentals so far..
li'l quiz: song #2 is referred in another rocker's song from 1989. What song is that?
-
WOS to the Top 40's only mention of huarache sandals. Never enjoyed the surf scene.
-
Beach Boys debuted in '63. In what year will the Beatles (yay) pop up?
-
sounds like that gidget just discovered sex..!

college mate was from La Jolla, which gives me a connection of sorts to this one...

Well, that didn't take long.

someone's wearing the crankysandals. ;)

li'l quiz: song #2 is referred in another rocker's song from 1989. What song is that?
That would be "Running Down a Dream" by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Bob.
-
BOS2 Beau Brummels!
-
Speaking of the beach, my wife inexplicably got "Beach Blanket Bingo" at the library yesterday. We watched it last night -- really cringeworthy, including a really sad appearance by a very old Buster Keaton.
-
I thought love was only true in Monkee tales. BOS3 to the one that bought Neil Diamond one of his many houses, no doubt.
-
BOS2 Beau Brummels!
Gets my vote (so far).
Trivia: For five frink points, why did the Beau Brummels choose that name as their moniker?

Correct for fifty dollars! (applause) Pick again.

Guessing 67 or 68. Wait--is Incense and Peppermints '67 already? This is gonna be super-short set. Just two songs to go at 10:23.

Look at yourself, look at yourself: You're a BOS!
-
BOS2 Beau Brummels!
Gets my vote (so far).

So Billy Joel would have a touchstone reference for "It's Still Rock & Roll to Me"?
You might like to (hear) my organ: ride, Sally, ride!
-
Sly's gonna add some bottoms. Do tell!
-
Co-Co-MO-shun! BOS4 to a less-than-overplayed CCR gem.
-
VHM for "Commotion". Rarer than average CCR.
-
no surprise that this was a short one -- the '60s VT Dave did last year (2 years ago?) was equally brief.
-
And we're done at 10:30!
-
Notice that even tho' she's still using the "game over" sound, AL seems to have ditched the stuttery computer-voices. Foghead complaints?
-

so Bruno's not the only one with a singing penis?

I'd forgotten he did one, but you're absolutely right. October 10, 2007, to be specific. Only one artist common to both. (This one went from 61 to 70.)

Jaynetts Sally Go 'Round The Roses
Roy Orbison Oh Pretty Woman
Gentrys Keep On Dancin'
? & the Mysterians 96 Tears
Jackie Wilson Higher & Higher
Grass Roots Midnight Confessions

That, or maybe program director complaints?

if KFOG actually *had* a PD, maybe ;) Don't think they've replaced Benson yet; one guy's running KFOG/da Bone/KNBR/The Ticket. But I'm guessing AL's gotten a lot of "make it your own but don't reinvent the wheel, either" feedback. We're hearing a lot more of the drop-ins and jingles Dave used lately; they were absent the first few weeks of AL's reign.

Yeah, I've noticed a lot of the choral year-ID bumpers and such are back. Not a bad call. Give the longtime 10@10 fans something familiar to latch onto, and since Don Pardo is now retired too, that eliminates a lot of old clips right off the top.

I guess Gaz has the cranky baggies on!

Whew--wikipedia's essay agrees with what I'd heard was their reasoning. Which is that "Beau Brummel" follows "Beatles" alphabetically, and therefore, would put their records right after the Fab Four's in record store bins, thus resulting in more sales. Or that was the theory, anyway.

I decided to leave my comment up when I saw yours, as I was making a direct pun on pants, with the surf version! But point taken. Sometimes when you can't post during the set, things get passed over!
