Got a 10am phone meeting, but I'm going to guess '91 right now.
-
I'm thinking this is around 94.

I'm thinking this is around 94.
I think '96, since it's a year AL hasn't visited yet. And the BART strike clue rings a bell.
-
wait... is it songs with "mystery" in the title? AL has done '94 but not '91 so far, so it's not '94 if it's a year set.
-
HELL Yes!
BOS #1
-
SNZ's "Hell" gets a BOS and tells me it could be '97. if so, I'm thrilled -- a great year, best of the decade.

the BART strike was '97 iirc.

BOS2 Mighty Mighty Bosstones! This really WAS a fab year.
I just saw them on Friday at the Fillmore. very fun. There was a family there -- dad, mom in MMBT's tatran miniskirt, and two teens -- and they were down at the fringes of the mosh pit. But I think the kids were in the back.
eta: She also had their bulldog mascot tattooed on her upper back!

BOS for the Mighty Mighty BOSsTones!
both songs so far were on my "best of '97" mixtape; I'm hoping for "Brimful of Asha" and "Female of the Species" and (of course) "Tubthumping", "Your Woman" and "MMMMMMMBop"

Boom Boom Boom Boom: dull dull dull dull.
-
this Squirrel Nut Zippers came out in '97, their first album came out in '96.

Boom Boom Boom Boom: dull dull dull dull.
I never minds me a little John Lee Hooker. Who's singing this with him?
-
VHM Wag the Dog. -- the movie and the song
-
BOS for Wag the Dog, VHM for "Wag the Dog".
-
OK, meeting done. Interesting that it seems that she already played the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, but it's still showing up as "upcoming" in the player.
-
Yeah, giant BOS for Hiatt's "Little Head"!
-
proxy of GazWOS for Hiatt, thinking with his, er, little head.

yes, this is very lame-ass.

Must remember this one if AL ever does a theme set about body parts.
-
WOO HOO!!!! BOS3 Blur -- "oh SHIT!"
-
Oh well, no love for Hiatt, but how about Blur? Mr. Albarn is a talented guy.
Another BOS for Huffamoose. This was pretty huge on KFOG at the time, but I really like it.
-
WOS Huffamoose -- worst band name, like, ever. Yes, KFOG played this at the time -- while ignoring Blur, Chumbawumba, Cornershop, Squirrel Nut Zippers... and smothering us with Hootie clones.
-
Big BOS for Blur, which was sitting in the on deck circle on the player fro a while there.
From AMG:
"Song 2," with its stomping four-chord riff and loud-soft dynamics, was clearly a Nirvana sendup. It's a testament to Blur's tremendous gifts as musicians that the song only sounded like a parody to those in the know and, furthermore, it didn't matter, since it was catchier, hookier, and more concise than any grunge tune. The song is practically over once it's begun, something that just never happened with lethargic grunge. And the hook -- Damon yelling "woo-hoo!" as the guitars come crashing in (you can practically see him doing his trademark jumps in your mind's eye) -- is brilliantly simple and dumb, as catchy as anything Nirvana wrote, and better than anything any Seattle group outside of Stone Temple Pilots did. It was a pure rush of sound and if the words didn't necessarily make sense, well, it was hard to follow what Layne Staley was talking about, and Albarn's snide "It's not my problem" cuts deep into the heart of slackerdom. And "When I feel heavy metal" is just plain funny.
Hey Gaz, is it worth your while to tell Stephen Thomas Erlewine that Stone Temple Pilots are from San Diego?
-
BOS for Blur, and am enjoying whatever this track following it is--Huffamoose? This was a year before I moved to SF so didn't get the saturation treatment on the KFOG playlist that year.
-
Really, no love for Hiatt? And that Huffamoose song was foreign to me. I guess I wasn't listening that closely in 1997. Was that when Diana died?
Ohhhh, Fiona. I loved that piano. Still do. Also, the skanky Calvin Klein-style amateur porn video. ;-}
-
"I've been a bad bad girl..."
surely that segue was unintentional.

WOS Huffamoose -- worst band name, like, ever. Yes, KFOG played this at the time -- while ignoring Blur, Chumbawumba, Cornershop, Squirrel Nut Zippers... and smothering us with Hootie clones.
worse than Hoobastank? ew.

Well, OK. Both are in the Top 5.

Hmmm, tell me more...I dig Fiona, though the phrasing in this song is somewhat problematic for me.

I vote for Slobberbone in this contest. (Noticing a three-syllable commonality here.)

apparently Gaz is a dedicated non-appreciater. his WOS vote came by proxy of Mike.
I wasn't a big fan anyway, and I think that song pushed me further away. :'(

yeah, that's pretty bad, but I don't think I've heard of them. Have they charted? That would be a requisite if we are to continue this thread, which would be awesome!

One of the clearest memories I have of '97. It was Sunday morning of Labor Day Wknd, and we'd gotten up at 5am to make a day trip up into the Sierra above Yosemite. Flipped on the tube & saw the news. Heard more news while driving out. Hit the trailhead & started on our 3 mile hike to meet up with my cousin who was camping out up there for the 3-day weekend. Part way up the trail bumped into a couple heading down & we all stopped to chat for a bit. From their accents it became clear that they were Brits, so I asked them if they'd heard about Diana. Of course they hadn't, up there in the mountains, & they were pretty shaken up about it.
But I always think of them, because whenever anyone around them talks about where they were when they heard the news, they will say, "we were on a trail in the mountains in California & some Yank told us."

Am guessing not. They were sort of a jam band/alt country hybrid in the late 90s/early oughts. Not sure if they're still around.

Final BOS for Foo Fighters.

Jam bands with awful names would be a list all by itself ;)
One of the best '90s sets in memory.

I was up at Camp Mather, at the Strawberry Music Festival. Word spread pretty quickly that morning through the camp that she'd been in an accident, but no confirmation of her death. By noon that had changed.

AL sez BOS to Fiona. Really, you don't remember the video?

Wow, that's bad. But I only remember the print ads, guess the commercials got pulled right quick.

I was at home Sat nite, listening to Sully Roddy's late lamented alt-country show on KNEW. She NEVER did news during her show, but she interrupted the music to do a bulletin. But Di was officially being reported as dead before midnite Sat nite, as I recall.

Yecch, this set reminded me of Dave-type 90s sets. :( No BOS's, but HM's to the Mighty Mighty Bosstones and John Hiatt.
WOS to Squirrel Nut Zippers. I HATE that song! >:( (Although, it wasn't nearly as bad as that Cherry Poppin' Daddies song that was released slightly later...)

wow -- interesting. We (as a group) tended to dislike Dave's '90s sets: too much KFOG playlist fodder and not enuf outside-the-box stuff. But this set was not that at all, to my ears. Nearly 2/3 of it was Live 105 songs that KFOG completely ignored in '97.
As I stated earlier, '97 is by far my favorite year of that decade; and Dave only did one or two 1997 sets (and he did, to his credit, play Hanson's "MMMMBop" in one of 'em). It's a rare '90s set that elicits multiple BOS's from me; hope AL can keep it up.

Correct me if I'm wrong, I count 4 out of 10 that were actually played by KFOG (Mclachlan, Knopfler, Hiatt, Huffamoose) and the rest (except BHT w/Hooker) are Live 105 gems. And that's a *good* thing.
Shame about the lame-ass SnoozeTraveler Bonus, tho'.

I think what made this one (and Dave's 90s sets) a snoozer for me wasn't necessarily that it had too much old KFOG playlist stuff but that it was full of Hot AC recurrents - Sarah McLachlan, Mighty Mighty Bosstones (great song, but still Hot AC these days), Blur, Fiona Apple, and the Foo Fighters. I hear those daily on Alice or Star. (Funny though, speaking of MMMBop I actually heard that today on Alice for the first time in years!) I actually like the old KFOG staples because I had not discovered Triple A radio in 97 and by the time I did most stations had stopped playing those -- for instance I had never heard Huffamoose or the Big Head Todd version of Boom Boom & only heard that Knopfler tune once.
There is quite a bit of overlap between recurrents that are played on Hot AC nowadays and songs that were hits on Alternative and AAA stations back then. Dave's 90s sets had too much AAA/Hot AC overlap (i.e. Wallflowers) whereas Annalisa's previous 90s sets played Alternative hits with little to no overlap. (99, 90, & 94 were great!) But today's set had quite a bit of Alt/Hot AC overlap so that explains why I found it boring as hell.
Plus, that Sarah McLachlan song is IMO one of her blandest and most overplayed, not to mention an even more lethargic TOTHC than 99.9 F was a few days ago -- I thought "Sweet Surrender" would have been much better.
But, despite my hate for "Hell," I have to give her credit for it because it did make me stop and go, "ah, I remember that one!"

I wasn't really into this set, which is one reason why I didn't mind cruising over for chunks of The Sound's '66 set.

oooh! '66! Sounds full of possibilities.
-
BOS tie for Foo Fighters and Fiona Apple.
If Cornershop ever come up, they'll automatically win my vote. Not just "Brimful Of Asha", but also "Good Shit", "Funky Days Are Back Again" and "Good To Be Back On The Road Back Home".
And of course, for whenever 2002 comes around, "Lessons Learned From Rocky I to Rocky III".
I can't help but notice that Annalisa has given Blur more than their share of representation. And that's good.
-
Well, she kinda had to play "Building a Mystery" to match the theme, right?
