Title: 11 June 2009--it's 1982
Post by: urth on June 11, 2009, 10:02:10 AM
Square Pegs and Adam Ant lead the set.

Subtle innuendo...

Oooh, BOS for the Stranglers, with a nice little Baroque song about heroin.  Sure never heard this one on KFOG, but plenty on RadioParadise (now, that is).

This is the Stranglers? Wow, would not have known it. I'm liking it, and it's almost certainly an ATBB.

My computer decided to have a stroke at 9:58; I'm just getting back to speed now. Doesn't look like I've missed anything much -- Musically Morey-esque, it would seem.  Rob's certainly played the Stranglers if no one else has.

VHM for Huey.  Definite KFOG fodder, but a great song.  And an LSJUMB song to boot.

Holy Crap!!!

Judas Priest, and a nifty segue into it from the political clip.

Jesus Christ, it's Judas Priest!

I always thought the phrase was "another thing coming", and that's what they're saying, eh?  But I've been told it's supposed to be "think".  What's up with that?

Rob's certainly played the Stranglers if no one else has.

Dave's only ever played two Stranglers tunes, both in 1986, "Dreamtime" & "Ghost Train" with the former being a major Katrina.

DUUUUDE! it's a play on words!  Rob Halford, in a leather codpiece, and folks were TOTALLY surprised when he came out.

It was originally think, as in 'if you think thus-and-so, you've got another think coming' (i.e you are dead wrong to think that).

But somehow the the pop culture corrupted it because the soft final g is easier to enunciate than the hard final k.

I confess that this set is not exciting me -- AL says she's an "Eighties gal" but this is too close to DM territory for the most part (JP and the Stranglers notwithstanding).

I don't get it.

Anyway, it appears you can say it either way.  I'll have to ask William Safire to waste a column on it.

Yeah, the Square Pegs "totally different head" clip that led into Goody Two Shoes is a DM staple, too.

without trying that hard, Dave Wakling is prob the artist I've seen more than any other

82: Beat (REM opened!)
85: Gen Pub
92?: Dave @ Footstock (after Bay to Breakers)
06: saw Dave doing sound check in vegas at Mandalay Bay pool, he was to play later that night for Oracle conventioneers
08: Dave at Folsom Street Faire

.. and there might be another appearance in there somewhere I've forgotten about.

I second that.  This song was pretty big in 81, but I guess it was still going in 82.

"that was (very moderately) swell, wasn't it?"

Yeah, but how often did we hear Dave say, "That was a gooood set!" following one that we were pretty uniformly nonplussed over?  It'd really be news if one day she came on and said, "Y'know, that set was kind of mediocre. I don't know what I was thinking--I really screwed the pooch on that one."

Jesus Christ, it's Judas Priest!

Rod & I saw Spamalot last night, and among the many funny moments was the one where God gives Arthur & the knights the quest for the Holy Grail, and says "Jesus Christ!" in frustration with their grovelling.

Well, I don't expect AL to hit a home run every day -- gawd knows DM didn't.  Tomorrow will be telling; we've hit every decade this week except '60s, so will it be "way, way back", or a theme set?
