Let's see how AL does with what is traditionally one of the most-dreaded years
on the wheel in the computer.
-
AL is achin' to be. 'Mats lead off--so far so good.
-
i like her use of the beep-boop time machine thingy -- which I believe is from either Conan or Jon Stewart?

This is only in the Db once, over 6 yrs ago!

From the Daily Show, "This Week in God", I believe.

This Week in God, as I recall, a old Daily Show schtick that Colbert used to do. But my memory is a little suspect.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and predict that AL gives us either "Buffalo Stance" or "Batdance," either of which would make my morning. (Yeah, it's 1 pm here, but since I just woke up, I'll call it morning.)

Just noticed that "Replacements-Achin' to Be" was listed in the "now playing" window on the old-school KFOG player, which never happened during Dave's tenure. Which tells me that Annalisa's playing stuff that's saved on their server, where I think Dave was spinning CDs (and vinyl) manually, without using the technology.
ETA: And the "upcoming song" field just told me what she was gonna play next. Not sure I like that part of it.
Except it was wrong! It's saying Dylan's Everything is Broken is next, and we got Smithereens.

And this Petty cut is a Bustout, perhaps even an ATBB.

Ha! -- the Neneh Cherry was the first song that leapt to mind when i heard the year. I'd settle for "Walk the Dinosaur" and an avoidance of FYC.

so it's like the Sound's deal (or Ginger's). As Ray Stevens so eloquently put it: "DON'T LOOK, ETHEL!"
-
Who are the 'Mats?
-
Who are the 'Mats?
Replacements. During their salad days in Minneapolis, they were jokingly referred to as the 'Placemats' which got shortened to 'Mats by the cognoscenti.
-
Dave always played "A Girl Like You" in 1990, and now that I've checked, Annalisa's right & he was wrong. Album & single both released & peaked in '89.
-
BOS to what may be a bustout, Kate Bush's "Love & Anger." "What would we do without you?"
-
BOS for Kate Bush. Very good variety dere, bub.
-
Who are the 'Mats?
Dude... you really gotta pay more attention. The Replacements (aka the Re-Placemats, aka the 'Mats). We've been calling them that for 10 years.
-
BOS for Kate Bush. Very good variety dere, bub.
ditto... BOS
-
BOS to what may be a bustout, Kate Bush's "Love & Anger." "What would we do without you?"
indeed: BOSFRA from me.
-
"Love and Anger" is yet another ATBB.
Maybe we no longer need to fear late 80's & early 90's sets anymore?
-
VHM Waterboys -- a DaveTrina, but we won't hold it aginst AL.
-
Too weird: Last night someone was Googling for my late friend Brandon and found - and posted to - my "Fisherman's Blues" entry on him.
BOS of BOSes, needless to say.
-

Def. high on my list so far. Gotta give AL points for digging deep into the releases of 89--when the Smithereens is the closest thing to a frequent flyer, we're doing pretty well.
OK, I suppose Fisherman's Blues could be considered a K, but it's so good I doubt any of us would care. BOS3.

At least not until we get sick of all of AL's faves.
-
I think we're right about the Now Playing feature vis a vis stuff the deejay brings form home...during the Kate Bush track it read: "Now playing KFOG 104.5 and 97.7 - World-Class Rock".
I suppose KFOG & the Sound use the same exact software.

At the risk of incurring even more Wrath of MikeTM, what's an ATBB?
-
VHM Waterboys -- a DaveTrina, but we won't hold it aginst AL.
not officially a Katrina, as 1/3 of its appearances are from St. Pats day sets. Still a frequent flyer, and likewise, I don't care - BOS#3.

across the board bustout, i.e a song that not only isn't in the Db, but we also consensually agree none of the other 10@10's have played it either.
-
this whole set is satisfying so far, even if I wasn't into that Petty tune.
-

Sure looks like it. Meanwhile Fisherman's Blues showed up as "now playing" but Everything is Broken was still in the "next up" window--ah, there it is now, following the Exxon Valdez clip. Not bad.
We'll know AL is really getting into the groove when her segue subtext starts to elicit comments like DM's did.
-
Wrath of MikeTM
ROTFLOL!
Oh, and I can't remember what ATBB stands for either, but don't care enough to look it up.
-
ah, but the Dylan is another DaveTrina (yeah, I get the Waterboys St Pat's distinction, but Dave played this one a LOT in '89)

well Valdez was definitely broken, so that segue sure qualifies...dontcha think?

ROTFLOL!
Oh, and I can't remember what ATBB stands for either, but don't care enough to look it up.
It's not in the glossary, so I felt marginally justified in asking about it.
Another BOS for the Pixies -- certainly never appeared on 10at10 before, though it's kind of a frequent flyer on RadioParadise.
-
F***in' A!!!!!
BOS uber alles, The Pixies!
ETA: not only a song, but an artist bustout. I don't think my affection for Dave will wane, but my trepidation for the future of 10@10 is definitely waning.
-
Wrath of MikeTM
ROTFLOL!
10@10 the Next Generation: The Wrath of Mike
[Shatner/Kirk voice]"MIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIKE!"[/Shatner/Kirk voice]
-
And speaking of ATBBs, this is a big one: Pixies, Here Comes Your Man. Another BOS from me.
ETA: I think AL may have used this as a Bonus Track once or twice. Still a bustout within the boundaries of the set proper though.

It's a Rob fave on the Peak when ever he does '89 as well. (Which means it's not really an ATBB)

Not really. I have the feeling I've heard that one before--maybe Dave used it a time or two? So minus points for cribbing.

Some steaming NO funk from the Neville Brothers!
-
Neville Bros puttin' some Voodoo on yo' ass. "Yellow Moon" was a DaveTrina, but this?

I wonder if Annalisa ever lurked here. We have oft complained over the years about why Dave seldom went for a deeper track on albums like this one where he plays the one track to death, and then some.

actually I should modify my previous comment, as Dave did play this twice before in the Db.
-
BOS XTC -- I actually had never really heard of them before, but bought this album just for this song...
-
I may be the Mayor of Simpleton, but I know one thing and that's BOS #6.
(a guaranteed record for my voting in this year)
-
Not a thing wrong with the Mayor of Simpleton. Irresistible.
Even allowing for the novelty at having someone new driving the bus, AL is pulling out some pretty good stuff. She may stay. :)
-
Ooh, "Here's Where the Story Ends" is a real sledgehammer for me. And a great song. I heard this song on vacation on the east coast with Anne before we were married, driving around in a major boat Grand Marquis.

what's with the Foghorn?
-
hmnm, I think my stream crapped out. anyone else?
can we blame the DJ?
eta: no, it's back. Sorry AL. I heart you!
-
VHM Sundays...here's another refugee from a Dave 1990 set, but I'm pretty sure this time that Dave was right & Annalisa's wrong. I've a specific attachment of this song to a girl I dated in the early summer of 1990 (bet you can guess why).

AL is assembling her own array of bumpers I guess. Anyone catch the whispered "KFOG" bumper that she dropped in prior to either the Pixies or XTC tune?

wow, talk about an about-face, TC! You even have her as yer avatar.

One of my college friends that I worked at a restaurant with, & often got rides from, drove one of those. This was in Tacoma & he named it the Klickitat, after one of the Washignton State Ferries. "We don't park it, we moor it."

I played this CD when a relationship ended, too. It felt so good to wallow in their melancholy sound. I also adored My Finest Hour

hmm, we've had three sets from AL:
Monday: Jill Sobule I Kissed A Girl
Tuesday: Monks' Monk Time contains the lyric "Pussy galore's comin' down and we like it."
Wednesday: a song from Kate Bush
guess the connection? :P

Bwhahahaha! Hrm, what can she play in tomorrow's all-Neil Young set?

Anyone hear the bonus track? The stream got aced out again. (However, if it turned out to be Orinoco Flow, I am thankful.)

TANC: Just went back and found Ben Fong-Torres' interview with Annalisa from last summer. This passage rang a bell:
"They wanted to change it from 'Nonstop Rock' to 'Untamed Radio,' and the new program director - a woman - wanted me to say, 'Rock 'n' roll with a hard-on,' and I wasn't going to do that. So one morning, I put all the phones on hold, played whatever I wanted - it was the Replacements' 'Achin' to Be' - and left. You could do that, then."
So Achin' To Be is an AL-fave. The whole piece is here, if anyone wants to read it:
