Sorry, Annalisa-haters...
OTOH, they're very explicitly soliciting suggestions. Well, step up, folks.

Subject: KFOG's 10@10
Thursday, May 28, 2009
Dear Foghead,
Thank you for a terrific start to a very unique year. Because of you, we came together for a spectacular night of fireworks at KaBoom, donated over $300,000 to Bay Area Food Banks through Live From the Archives and soon we'll devote a full month celebrating some of the Bay Area's best during Local Music Month. We say it often because it's true...we couldn't do it without you.
It's also been a year of change for all of us. Our beloved Dave Morey is now happily retired. And while our wish was to have Dave continue as host, his commitment to 10@10 will wrap up this month. Coincidentally, the incomparable Don Pardo has also announced his retirement (at age 91!). As you can imagine, this will mean a few changes to KFOG's 10@10.
As always, we look to you, Fogheads, for your input.
KFOG's 10@10 will continue to deliver 10 great songs from one great year covering everything from the '60s to today. We'll add in a lot of your favorite 10@10s including classic 10@10s from over the years, Foghead 10@10 sets handpicked by you, as well as themed 10@10s voted by you. And it will be you, the Fogheads, who will vote each 10@10's "Best of Set."
And we found the perfect host to introduce each day's 10@10 while allowing the music, news and additional audio highlights speak for themselves. Drum roll, please.
Starting Monday, June 1st, our very own Annalisa will take the baton as your new host for KFOG's 10@10. (She'll also continue as KFOG Midday Host on KFOG 104.5/97.7.)
You may already know this but Annalisa is a self-proclaimed music junkie, a phenomenal lady and she couldn't be more excited! Most importantly, she wants to hear from you.
So tell us and Annalisa ... what would you like to hear on KFOG's 10@10? Email us at fogheademail@kfog.com.
10@10 is a Foghead tradition as much as it's been a KFOG tradition. We're looking forward to hearing your contributions as we grow 10@10 in the days ahead. You can also email good wishes to Annalisa. (It's always great to have support from friends when starting a new gig!)
Include your name and mailing address.we'll send you a KFOG New Music Sampler as a small token of our thanks for your input. (While supplies last.)
Thanks, again, Fogheads. Now, who can guess which year Annalisa will pick for her first 10@10? We'll find out together on Monday!
Love,
KFOG

Thanks, Darryl, for beating me to the post.
Ugh. Condescension tastes like cough syrup. "while our wish was to have Dave continue as host": oh, eat me.
-
This is, like, so un-phenomenal.
She has good musical taste, no argument there, but I hope she keeps the buzzer sound after the last song ("Uh Oh, that's Tune number Ten, and our time is up!"). That way I know exactly when I have to run run RUN to the radio and turn the volume down. :P

So today's '73 set is Dave's swan-song, sorta. Wonder what, if anything, they'll say on-air today.
So, if they can't use his voice (as he has said) then how are they gonna "mix in old favorite 10@10s"? I mean, either they can use him or not.

perhaps it's good I can't 'listen live' as that song in this setting would surely spawn tears.

Ugh. Condescension tastes like cough syrup. "while our wish was to have Dave continue as host": oh, eat me.
Actually, I'm pretty sure that whoever wrote the email works in the station, and whoever made the decision to refuse Dave's proposal to continue does not. I bet I know exactly how the person who composed that felt & what the alternate email they composed in their head would read if it wouldn't get them fired:
It's also been a year of change for all of us. Our beloved Dave Morey is now happily retired. And while our wish was to have Dave continue as host, and he had strongly expressed his desire to continue & made a very reasonable proposal to KFOG's owners to do so, those heartless fuckers who own the station screwed it up and ruined the negotiations because they simply didn't want to pay Dave a single penny for his efforts. Even though everyone here who knew Dave wanted him to continue, his commitment to 10@10 will wrap up this month. Coincidentally, the incomparable Don Pardo has also announced his retirement (at age 91!), which gives the owners yet another convenient excuse to stop paying for the rights to use recordings of his voice made many years ago.
...

Starting Monday, June 1st, our very own Annalisa will take the baton as your new host for KFOG's 10@10. She'll also continue as KFOG Midday Host on KFOG 104.5/97.7, which means she now has to work an extra hour of on-air time every day, and do at least another half hour of prep beforehand. You can be sure the heartless fuckers aren't compensating her either, and most likely told her she had to do it or else they'd get rid of her like they did Benson.
Doubtlessly my take is flavored by what I've been going through a lot lately at work: Some idiotic upper managment decisions/policies that I had argued against still happen & then I have to
a) be the deliverer of bad/unpleasant news to people I like a lot better than my upper mgmt,
b) spin-doctor it to make it sound nicer than anyone would believe for a second, so I'm pretty sure that they know I'm being disingenuous, at best,
c) know all along that I can't tell the whole story, even though I firmly believe that it's not only more ethical to do so but much better business practice,
d) bear the brunt of the recipients' displeasure, and
e) take all the blame.
What's funny is telling my Taiwanese wife all of the above about my Taiwanese upper mgmt, and hear her get even more pissed at them than I do!

I'll give you a hint, the MAY bit is not a clue, just Mike trying to enunciate the syllable in typeface. But it is just about the most appropo lyric you could imagine. I have a funny feeling Webster picked it.

Yeah, this morning I realized this is Re: KFOG, but very much about 10@10.
So did you non-regular-KFOG listeners miss Annalisa's appearance prior to today's 10@10 (which I'm now missing thanks to a stupid all-hands meeting at work. "What? We're launching a Palm Pre next week? Oh, yay us.")
She was talking with The Morning Show about the handoff, being excited, etc. Webster quoted last night's email, and since they had already gotten a bunch of responses they read some of those as well. They filtered it for mainly positive stuff about Annalisa, praise for Dave (and seeming cluelessness that they were re-runs), and hopefulness about the future.
I can't remember if it was Webster or Peter who asked if she'd play vinyl (sure), Greg asked about "Hits from Hell" (yeah), Disco (heck yeah) and something else, and they gave her the "Ok, she'll play bad music, good." Then she threw in that one thing she wanted to *add* was guest DJs. Now the baby was crying as I was changing his diaper, but I believe she was saying that listeners could somehow win a chance to pick songs. Heard Webster/Renee say, "Wow, that'd be a really cool prize/experience!" Not sure if it also included a studio visit or airtime like that one couple that won the auction years back, but cool nonetheless.
Webster joked that now she'll lie awake at night worrying about what she'll be playing the next day. She said that she did have a crisis picking the year of the first show, and that her husband (?) suggested she just pull a quarter out of a jar and use that year. Luckily it wasn't 2006, nor was it 1945. Laughter all around, and I think Greg or Peter mentioned a reader e-mail requesting that they play more music from the 50s, ha ha. She actually said that a 50s set would be cool, or words to that effect. She said she listened to a lot of the music of her dad and her grandfather, which seemed to indicate some depth of knowledge to me.
Ok, well I'm going to peek at the setlist now. Is somebody else going to tape the rerun tonight? Think you could put it up somewhere as an MP3?
-
I guess I'll listen a little bit now to see what she says.
-
I guess I'll listen a little big now to see what she says.
They played Dave's 10@10 promo right after the set, which includes mention of the HD Radio 10@10 channel. Wonder if they're going to continue playing his sets with the intro and backsell edited out (gee, that'd be confusing for some listeners--"what's this song with all the moaning and the sex noises?" whenever Jungle Fever appears), or start playing Annalisa's classics? (So on Monday, listeners hear nothing but one set, over and over and over....)

as I indicated earlier, whatever deal KFOG has struck with Dave is confusing to me. The email indicated they'd occasionally play Morey "classics", but either they can use his old shows or they can't, so WTF? Maybe Dave's allowing them to use X-number of shows per year for a fee, in return for not suing them? HD radio is dead-in-the-water at this point; it wouldn't surprise me if they discontinued the all- 10@10 HD Channel altogether.

Not sure how air talent contracts work at all, but I wonder if the contract he had stipulated that they own all the stuff he aired, his 10@10s, his bumpers, everything. they prob could air his old morning shows if they want to.

I wondered about that. I wouldn't have been surprised if it was the way you describe--for most folks, anything you create while on the company's dime belongs to the company. However, it would depend on how his contract was structured. From what Dave said via a message I got a couple weeks ago that echoed Davefish's IM exchange with him, they could play the music and clips of the sets, but not use his voice or image without paying him for it. Which we know they are not willing to do. So I'd think that would have to be edited out somehow. Maybe the KFOG jocks are recording replacement intros and backsells?
Although Mike's right--HD radio is a drug on the market, and if they're looking for a place to cut costs, that might be a good place to start.

"Dave's Not Here" by Cheech and Chong?
;)
ROTFL!! Annalisa should TOTALLY open Monday's show with that bit!
That'd be a scream, and would start the show off on a good note.
So I wonder what features of 10@10 as we know it will remain? Sounds as if Don Pardo is leaving along with Dave. Whose voice would you all suggest they get to replace Don's? (I'd love to hear Harry Shearer, but I'd bet that's pricey, and as we know, pricey don't play with Cumulus.) Will The Time Warp still be the theme music? The buzzer? Will she use the same stash of audio clips? Guess we better tune in Monday to find out.

My guess is that the cheapies at Cumulus are not gonna get another "name" announcer --they'll use "KFOG Announcer-Voice Guy" that they use on their promos. (Tho' if they wanna splurge they might grab John O'Hurley while he's in town; remember he was the voice of the late unlamented "95.7 Max".) They may still have the Monty Hall clips on file from back in the day, but he might be considered too "old-school" for 10@10: The Next Generation. I hope they continue to use "Time Warp"; I'm sure most of the movie/TV/news clips are in their library ready to be played and replayed. I'd love for them to resurrect "Beulah the Buzzer" from the old Firesign Theater bit, but that's probably too un-PC these days.
-
it may be a really futile and stupid gesture, but I vote for bringing back Larry 'Bud' Melman.

And you're just the guy to do it!

We caught the Saturday matinee of Spamalot last weekend. Fun show. Hung out at the stage door and got our commemorative can of Spam (from the original Broadway run -- a friend in NYC picked it up for us) signed by O'Hurley and the kid who played Lancelot.

Well, phenomenal Fogheads, it's time for...........
10 @ 10: The Next generation. (as Webster so aptly put it)
I am so excited to get in and play radio on this and I love your
responses and great suggestions, too! Thank you so much.
Expect all the usual fun of unfolding classic eras on 10 @ 10 and some new unusual twists as we "grow as we go" on the new 10 @ 10.
As our beloved Dave Morey and Don Pardo have BOTH retired, we'll need a new Don now. Here's where you come in. Announcing the open casting call for Don's spot. Send us your stuff...show us what you got...all for the glory of being on the radio daily at everybody's favorite hometown San Francisco & San Jose radio station, KFOG!
MP3's welcome fogheadvoices@kfog.com
We can't wait to hear from you! Thanks for listening- I'll be talking to you on KFOG Middays starting with 10 @ 10!
Enjoy and Be Well,
Annalisa
note her phrase: "I am so excited to get in and play radio on this" -- that's either very creative writing or just kinda bad.

Just checked. Dave's pics, blog, and the streaming files of his last Morning Show are still up on the KFOG site, but I'd assume they'll be gone by Monday morning. If anyone wants to save any of them just for old time's sake, do it now.

Could've and should've. He'd own the lake *and* the house. He had offers to syndicate it back in the day, but didn't want the extra work (or having to deal with more, less-friendly "suits").

OH OH OH... more listener mail this morning re: the end of the Dave Morey era of 10@10s. They read a listener mail saying that they thought Dave was in reruns and didn't realize he was back to doing the shows again, best wishes on a real retirement, etc.
I COULD NOT BELIEVE that nobody deigned to correct that error.
WORSE STILL, Peter Finch sighed and said, yes, if only we could come up with a ton of money to pay Dave, maybe he could still do 10@10, but as the email to Fogheads said, in these difficult economic times.
MAKING IT SOUND like it was Dave that was making a money play. I never got that sense, and as previously posted in these parts, I bet Dave made KFOG a very reasonable offer and they just dismissed him without even giving it a second thought. 10@10 always seemed as much a labor of love for Dave as it was a job, and I can't believe that he'd be trying to squeeze them, especially in "these difficult economic times". God damn I call bullshit. I'm going to mail them right now, in fact.

oy! I bet Dave walked away from a nice paycheck when he retired, but that was a poor spin of the issue by Peter. You can't trust the media, I tell ya.

From: Darryl
To: mornings@kfog.com
Cc: Rosalie (because I think she'd care)
Subject: 10@10 bits and pieces
Thing First: You read an e-mail from a listener who said she hadn't realized 10@10 was out of reruns and that Dave was doing the show live again.
I can't believe you guys didn't feel like you needed to correct her. All of the real fans know we've been listening to reruns, and it's incredibly disingenuous to not admit it now that you're "letting Dave retire, again".
Thing Second: Peter made an off-hand comment along the lines of: "...if KFOG had a ton of money we could pay Dave to keep doing 10@10, but like the e-mail said, 'in these difficult economic times...'"
This is horrible. You're making it sound like Dave was squeezing the station for some exorbitant amount of money which doesn't sound like the Dave we know and love. For whom 10@10 seemed more a labor of love than of a paycheck (and was attested to by many an article and interview that detailed the excessive extracurricular hours that went into every show.)
Further, you're making Annalisa sound like a scab who'll work for cheap.
I know it was an off-hand comment, Peter, but for those of us who love Dave, and miss him, it's not right for you to be so careless with your words.
And you guys should really not try to cover-up that the show was in reruns. And I'm sorry if management was in the room holding a shotgun at your heads when that e-mail was read, but still.

LOL! It's a terrific email, Darryl. Right on! Cumulus truly sucks.
yeah, it's great. I will give them major props if they read any of it.
But they won't, b/c everything you mention points to the morning show crew spewing the corporate spin over the truth. Either that or Peter is just dumb and didn't realize what he was reading. Either case is bad.
Yes, prime radio jobs are hard to get and keep, but isn't Peter supposed to be the news guy? news on KFOG is pretty light. I get the same depth of detail and nuance if I call into the kitchen and ask the SO to read the headlines and first few words from the Chron front page. (His Fog Files can be interesting, though.. "I'm Peter Finch with another edition of .. (pause).. The Fog Files.")
Funny, Del Vigil, reporter at the Chron, was very outspoken about the recent downsizing at the paper. He took out an huge ad (PDF) (http://mediaworkers.org/pdf/delad.pdf) in the Examiner lambasting Hearst's dealings in this whole thing as layoffs, buyouts and union restructuring were going on. Del was then laid off himself.
Del wrote on the Newspaper Guild site an article which asked, in essence, "Why is it that journalists are allowed (and even encouraged) to publicly challenge, question and criticize everyone else’s boss -- except for their own?" (http://www.mediaworkers.org/index.php?ID=6503)
Sometimes digging up and airing the truth could get you fired.

I'm not holding my breath for them to read that one on-air. :-}

Del was then laid off himself.

yes, it gets you fired. The right to free speech def. has negative ramifications.

Darryl, that was a great note.
And Ali - great to see you here! It's been a while!

Yeah, I'm missing out on a lot. Too much time spent at work and the payback isn't nearly enough. I'm a trooper and doing what it takes to get by. Luckily the time I spend is with nice people.

I think someone else may have mentioned this, but between the Neil Young and 79 sets in today's marathon they played an old (Dave era) promo that still refers to Dave Morey by name...gotta get that stuff cleaned up.

Yes... they played that the other nite before the 10pm replay too. And then they played a Dave-and-Don "our favorite show" intro! They had to play a couple of commercials and regroup. And last nite they didn't get the replay going until 10:15.
Another point worth mentioning -- it would seem that the "10@10 Birthday Club" is dead, unless AL gets a huge outcry from Fogheads asking where it went. Granted, she's still finding her feet with 10@10:TNG, but it would probably make management happy if it went away; I used to hear Dave reading B-day greetings to people and imagined the "suits" cringing in their offices, since rarely were any of the "birthday kids" under 50.
And it occurred to me this morning that AL did her first 1979 set without playing "I Do The Rock", which we know is a fave of hers. Next time fer sure.

10:00 meeting today -- I'll have to catch AL on the replay.

That's awesome Geoff -- kudos. My heart's at half-mast too.
Very nice indeed. (applause)
Just checked. Dave's pics, blog, and the streaming files of his last Morning Show are still up on the KFOG site, but I'd assume they'll be gone by Monday morning. If anyone wants to save any of them just for old time's sake, do it now.
They have finally taken down the links to the sound files of Dave's last show. At least they aren't on the Morning Show page any longer. However, they still have Dave's pic on the Airstaff page.

The last vestige of Dave's existence seems to have been removed from the KFOG site--his pic has finally been taken down from the Airstaff page. It was there last week, but I just looked again, and they're down to 7 pics--four of whom are on the Morning Show, and three for the entire rest of the day/week.

Where's the picture of the computer that forces, er, recommends highly that they play Snow Patrol 2.5 times a day? :-}
Actually, I can't complain too much about the current top 30 for August thus far. At least those Coldplay tracks are low on the list.

Not to belabor the point, but just wanted to observe that today is the first anniversary of DM's retirement. Hope he is happy and having fun on the frozen shores of Lake Michigan--or whichever one it is. And is no longer being beset by any obsessed crazies.

Dittoes.
BTW, after reading your post, I saw Daryl's above from August with the top 5 KFOG tracks back then according to airplay
51 Kings of Leon USE SOMEBODY Only by the Night
45 SNOW PATROL CRACK THE SHUTTERS Hundred Million Suns
43 Bell X1 THE GREAT DEFECTOR Blue Lights on the Runway
41 MAT KEARNEY CLOSER TO LOVE
39 GREEN DAY 21 GUNS
Jeezus, Kings of Leon and "21 Guns" which are STILL among the top 2 or 3, probably, along with that DMB "Why I Am" thing. And BTW, Urth, I saw that Ent Weekly named "21 Guns" one of their 10 Best Singles of the Year.

Actually it probably is, but I've heard it so damn often (mostly in the 20 minute span between 10:40 and 11am) that I'm still sick of it. I am curious what the other 9 singles are. I am guessing that the over/under on the number of them that I'd recognize is probably somewhere in the vicinity of 2, or maybe 3.
Btw, that gawdawful Rob Thomas song that's a bit further down the list is still getting a pretty strong push too.
