I remember exactly where I was, driving home, when M. Dung announced it.  I wondered why he was playing so much Marvin.  Such a great loss.

I had the same experience in NY. I'd just come out of a movie and got in my car, switched on Oldies CBS-FM, which did a Sunday night '50s/Doo-Wop show.  And they were playing '60s Marvin, several tunes in a row, and I thought: "either they've cancelled the Doo-Wop show, or else Marvin's dead".

And I went home and listened to the top-of-the-hour ABC Radio network news and they incorrectly referred to him as "'50s rock singer Marvin Gaye" (technically was *was* a Moonglow for a while but hardly what he was known for) and since I worked there I cringed, thinking "whothehell edited that script?"

I have a weird, and weirdly vivid, memory of learning of this.  I was at my friend Victor's house, and my brother called to give me the news.  I thought it was a cruel April Fools' prank, and a weird one at that - he knew I liked "Sexual Healing," but I was hardly a "fan" - but when I got home, I got the full story.  Ugh.  I will never understand.
