But we're starting with what sounds like Tim Finn--not too bad so far.

That was nice. but who's this? Not ringing any bells, and I was listening to KFOG heavily in '93.

This sounds to me like Phish, but not that KFOG ever played them until after the new millienium.

Almost gave a WOS to "Runaway Train" just because (a) the song got played out, and (b) rock singers dating actresses got played out too.

But I'll wait.

R.E.M. would seem to be a no-brainer for this set.  But I'd far rather get Barenaked Ladies.

HM to Soul Asylum's Runaway Train. Pretty catchy song, but this cost them most of their cred with the indie rock crowd. And Dave Pirner's becoming Winona Ryder's squeeze du jour didn't help any.

Speaking of Minneapolis bands, we could hear something from the Jayhawks in this set, Gaz--I think Hollywood Town Hall was a 93 release.

There was a Phish song they played around this time -- can't remember the name of it, but it was rather commercial sounding, and melodically it was kind of a ripoff of "Rocky Mountain High", of all things. First & last Phish tune they played until, as Mark said, the new millenium.

Found it.  The song is called "Lifeboy" from the album Hoist.

Which was released on March 29, 1994.

Swinging on the lifeline
Fraying bits of twine
Entangled in the remnants of the
Knot I left behind
And asking you to help me make it
Finally unwind

But God never listens to what I say
God never listens to what I say
And you don't get a refund
If you overpray

And when the line is breaking
And when I'm near the end
When all the time spent leading
I've been following instead
When all my thoughts and memories are
Left hanging by a thread

God never listens...
Stranded on this slender string
The minutes seem to last a lifetime
Dangling here between the light above
And blue below that drags me down

But God never listens to what I say
God never listens to what I say
And you don't get a refund
If you overpray

At least it's one of the livelier songs, "The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonight".

as one rock singer aid to the other: "Winona -- ride 'er?"

She does seem to have a thing for young, pretty rock stars--anyone ever compile a list of her conquests? Pirner was the first, but since then I could name Rhett Miller, Ryan Adams, and Colin Oberst just off the top of my head, and I'm sure there are more.

Too bad Dave won't expand his rap collection.  We could hear Positive K's "I Got a Man" or MC Brains' "Oochie Coochie" or Paperboy's "Ditty" and I'd be having a lot more fun right now.

My friend Dave* thought he was in love with Winona Ryder for years.  Then one day he suddenly realized that he was in fact in love with Winona's character in Beetlejuice and that Winona herself was in fact a slag.

and probably my BOS unless we get some Neil from Harvest Moon. Or Tina's "I Don't Wanna Fight" which is most unlikely.

WOS to "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," a debacle of a policy that pleased no one (though I won't condemn the entire Clinton presidency on its account).

Not getting the segue from that into Annie's "Little Bird," though.  "Why" would have made more sense.

not every segue is political. And you know how sensitive Dave is...
Actually, "I Don't Wanna Fight" woulda worked.

WOS-Fields of Gold. Insipid, insipid, insipid. At the time this was out, I was trying to woo a girl who just LOVED Sting, so I heard this even more than I would have otherwise. She turned out to be a waste of time, which I should have recognized when her musical taste became apparent.

If you ever hear Eva Cassidy's version, which is awesome, in contrast Sting's vocal workout here sounds very flat.

The Eva Cassidy version IS pretty, but the lyrics don't do anything for me.

In other news, I got laid off from Siemens yesterday (after 16 years), so I'm currently in the market for a new SW job.  Got one?

Thanks for the good wishes.  Actually the severance pay takes nearly all the sting out of it.  And the company is nearly totally screwed up now, so it's good to get out.

We were in the midst of a massive re-org, so upper level folks had already been let go.  Though they assured us that there wouldn't be cuts at the engineer level, we strongly suspected that that was not the case.  Which it wasn't.  125 people were let go at the individual contributor level.

Actually, there's an opening here for a Technical Project Manager.  Emphasis on programming background (c++, sql, etc...) and management.  In SF, small company, Workers Comp, general liability tracking/reporting software.  Let me know if you're remotely interested, and I'll shoot you more info...
