Title: 1966 on Wed 4/27/05
Post by: RGMike on April 27, 2005, 07:48:59 AM
at least I'm pretty sure that's what Bob promised us yesterday.  Any hope for "Bang bang" by Cher? or Nancy S, "How Does That Grab Ya Darlin'"?

Their morning show just played "Calif Dreaming" so we'll avoid that chestnut at least. I predict Stones and Paul Revere and maybe some Hollies.

this sounds like 1968 based on the news clips.

I haven't been early enought to hear the whole intro, but I was under the impression that it wasn't the same stuff every time, and usually included year specific stuff.

The pre-show montages are not necessarily related to the year in question. Which confuses the heck outta most of us.

Early BOS Yardbirds!

Early BOS to the Beatles: "Eleanor Rigby," while a less than ideal TOTHC, is one of Paul's best songwriting efforts, hands down.

Hoping to hear Paul Revere too.  "Hungry," maybe?

BOS2: the 'oo! Astounding that this wasn't a US hit.

BOS2, "Psychotic Reaction."  Not great songwriting at all, but what a fun listen.

Man, I gotta tell ya, ever since I first listened to Little Steven's Underground Garage, and especially since I picked up the 4-disc Nuggets set, I have really been in love with the whole garage genre.

So BOS #4 for "Psychotic Reaction"

Hey Gaz, regarding your quote, what's the latest on that whole finger thing.  I heard something in passing about the lady who claimed to find it being arrested.

What a year for great bad TV -- It's About Time, a personal fave.  There really should be a night on TV Land devoted to "lost" one-season-wonders like that.

"Good Thing" -- even better!  I sang this at a karaoke night in Glassport, PA once.

Indeed, this is a real lost classic from Mr. Revere.

Doris Day.

Better yet, he was also linked to Charles Manson:

...passing into infamy, when his former house on Cielo Drive became the site for the grizzly Manson Family murders. Melcher had known Manson and it was rumored that the producer's lack of interest in Manson's songwriting career was why the house on Cielo Drive was targeted.

ETA:  I remembered this stuff from his obit last fall.

Definitely worth the expense. Rhino put out a second Nuggets box that focuses on British psychedelic pop that has a lot of songs you've never heard by bands you probably never heard of (I hadn't) but some great stuff nonetheless (Fire Brigade by The Move).

The first one is indispensible, but the second one ain't bad either.

He was from Idaho, iirc, and the band formed in Portland (two places I visted last week on business).  Don't know where he is now, but I suppose you wouldn't know either unless it was somewhere here in the BA.

Portland was what I was going for as the band's origin. And you're not too far off as far as his current residence: he lives in Reno. Lots of work in the lounges up there, I guess.

I think they're originally from Boise, Idaho.  No idea where any of them are now, though I'd expect Mark Lindsay to still be in L.A.

It's all coming back to me now, he was born somewhere else, but raised in Boise & met Mark Lindsay there and they formed their 1st band.  However by the early 60's they were in Portland & it was there that they recorded their version of "Louie Louie" and went on to bigger and better things.
Title: There are no coincidences Part 27
Post by: urth on April 27, 2005, 04:09:41 PM
Tying a couple of today's threads together, I have the Nuggets Box (among many other things) loaded into my iTunes in my work computer, which I usually listen to on "shuffle." And what should just come up but Paul Revere & the Raiders' signature tune, "Just Like Me." Shades of "Where The Action Is."

Now THERE'S something that deserves to be released on DVD. Dick Clark was the host--I wonder if he still has the rights to that stuff.

If he does, we're screwed -- Dick's still in pretty bad shape isn't he?
