Title: 24 March 2009--it's 1984
Post by: urth on March 24, 2009, 10:01:43 AM
Hmmm. We heard Dave and Don spinning the wheel, but no actual announcement of the year. is this 84? 85? We're hearing one of the secondary singles from 90125. It Can Happen, I think.

we heard a snippet of Bowie's "1984", har har, and then this Yes song from that year. "It can happen" -- yeah, shit happens too.  Early WOS.

Ah, that's what that was--it didn't register with me. But I've got sawing and hammering going on in the room next to where I'm working so I'm a tad distracted (but don't tell my boss).

who's gonna drive us to a better year?

(and LA isn't much better -- looks like late '80s/early '90s)

Btw, It Can Happen is only in the DB once, which made pinpointing the origin of this set pretty easy. Jan 25, 2007. And mostly a good selection of stuff coming up--Frankie, Darryl and John, and Stevie Ray, to name several.

Nope, 89, I think. I'll hang here. The devil ya know...

And anyway, this is the one Cars song you'll rarely hear me bitch about, despite its copious cribbing from 10cc.

BOS to FGTH, "Two Tribes."  Many mixes of this one to choose from, and as is usually the case with the boys, the longer the better.

Right there with ya. And that Rock Report was a nifty little flashback--and one I don't recall Dave playing too often. Loved the Aztec Camera mention.

How many songs have the phrase "From a Whisper To a Scream" in the title? I can think of at least three: Elvis Costello's, Allen Toussaint's, and this one.

And here's one going out to the boys down at the Eagle.

"Whisper to a Scream" was once a deliightful obscurity, now one of the most overplayed "oldies" at Triple-A.

But OMG, Zebra gets a WOS2. I *totally* don't get the love for this one.  And it's a Narada besides, I'd never heard of it until I moved here.

Just when I was getting tired of U2's "Pride..." I found out Dave Marsh absolutely hates it... So therefore, BOS3.

The Eagle in NYC would have been apt, though.  (FWIW, bearish friends of mine have been trying to recruit me into the subculture for years, since I'm hairy morning noon and nitey-nite-nite.  Alas, it's not my bag.)

BOS4 Nik Kershaw -- a onetime Katrina that hasn't been overplayed in quite a while.

This song always makes me think of a guy I've known since college with whom I had a few not-all-the-way dalliances.  He just got engaged last week but I was unable to be supportive enough to attend the party.

it started out interesting (a rebellion against nellie-ness, in a lot of ways) but now it's a creepy fetish community more than anything else, run by the same fat queens it was meant to be a refuge from.

Indeed, it got played three times in '02, took a year off, and then got another three spins within 4 months in '04. But it's popped up only twice since then.

Sure would have. Too bad the stream got stuck on the ad loop today, so we missed the bonus track. Again.
