I was just as amazed that he's only 8 months older than I am.

BTW, KO mentioned last nite that it was also the 50th B-Day of his SNF colleague, Chris Collinsworth. And he said in another segment that Al Michaels is a rabid right-winger, which kinda surprised me.

Doesn't surprise me in the least. But I woulda figgered Madden to be even more so, and I heard somewhere recently that he's fairly liberal. Don't know how to verify that.

Doesn't surprise me at all that Madden is relatively liberal. Not that he discusses his politics much, but he's got a very humanistic outlook on life, which precludes a mercenary, dogmatic ideology. He likes people in all their many forms. I read his post Raider's books a long time ago and came away from the experience with an even greater fondness for the man and the coach. I don't care that much for him as an announcer these days (he's not awful, but the act's worn a bit thin), but I still believe he's an extremeley decent human being.
As a human being, Al Michaels seems like a pretty good play by play guy. (Actually, I have no opinion on Mr. Michaels other than his broadcasting talents, which are well above average. Of course, that's not much of a bar to set -- the average announcer is pretty awful these days.)

Happy BD to Chris Collinsworth too, then. Chris is one of the few broadcasters I truly enjoy listening to consistently -- near the top of that heap, imo. Add Jaws to that list, whose Xs and Os approach is far superior to any other commentator I can think of. Also, Howie Long, just because he's Howie Long and I am biased.
Not that being a former Raider gives you a pass -- Rich Gannon is flat out awful. Really really awful. Marcus wasn't very good either, and everyone figured that out pretty quick.
Hmmm, my work's not getting done.....

happy birthday, sir, to you!
