didn't recognized the 2nd one - a bluesy cover of "I Just Wanna Make Love To You" -- too lazy to chk the shraytabase.

Hell Cerrito's very own CCR sing Fortunate Son as the third entry -- love that one

BOS to Counting Crows' "Long December."  Nice thought for '09: "there's reason to believe maybe this one will be better than the last."

San Jose's answer to the Yardbirds sound: Count Five's "Psychotic Reaction" (you'll recall their lead singer recently passed).  And speaking of people who died died...

I did too.  Alas, that was all that Smash Mouth had in them - now all they're capable of is recycling mid-60s dance pop for cartoony movies.

PS: BOS2 to "Psychotic Reaction."

Except that Dave could have picked ANYTHING better than FYWB for this set.  I don't hate the song, but it's in the bottom 20%.

One of my claims to fame is that my cousins bought Janis's house in Larkspur. I never knew if this was really true - until I just did a search for my cousin, and came up with this article..

Very cool!  Is that your cousin mentioned in the article, John or Mike?

technically, they are second cousins.. John (the father) is my dad's cousin. Matt, Mike, Dave, and another boy I only remember as "Bub"!  We stayed there on a family vacation in 1976 and I was convinced I saw Bigfoot - scared all night. Went looking for prints in the morning.

Dumb question, maybe, but... this was "the SF Sound Part 2" -- instead of giving us all those shows from the same week in October, why didn't they just repeat the entire "SF Sound" series this week? It was timeless, and seemed custom-made for replay during a week without Dave.

I've been wondering that myself. Not so much about the SF Sound series, but why they'd cherrypick 4 sets from within a week of one another (turns out three were from three consecutive days of the same week--76, 87, and 74, while the fourth (82) was from the following Tuesday). Whatever. I somehow doubt DM had much say in it--probably all the PD's doing.

As for the SF Sound sets, they would have indeed made a good week's worth of classics. I checked my files, and found I had decided three of the four were worthy of archiving. The only one that wasn't? The one we heard today. The other three had some pretty significant nuggets (Beau Brummels, Sons of Champlin, Vince Guaraldi, Charlatans, Dead Kennedys, to name just a few) but I didn't see that kind of quality in this one. Here's the lists of all four if you care to peruse (the sets originally aired April 9 thru 12 of 2007, for the record).

Which, if I wasn't driving to Fresno at the time, would've received my Best Bass of Set award.
