Title: Thursday April 14--it's 1971!!!
Post by: urth on April 14, 2005, 09:43:22 AM
Dave just dropped today's year--yippeee! It's long overdue!

(Btw, does anyone else besides me kind of long for the days when the year of the daily set was a big secret until the Big Wheel was spun?)

when they first started running promos for the next day's year I was very annoyed -- it took the surprise away.  But I've gotten used to it and if it's a year I know will be crappy then I don't feel bad about missing it.  I long for the days when the most recent year was 1985 :D

If Dave's doing '71 today, then maybe tomorrow will be Tax Day after all.

Decent start with Blue Money. I remember thinking that Van copped the horn part on this song from the Sesame Street theme.

Blue Money is cool. But not as cool as green money.

'71 always makes me hope Dave'll pull out the legendary "Desiderata"/"Deteriorata" megamix.

Very nice obscurity level for "Albert Flasher".  I remember my parents had a single of this song when it came out, along with "When You're Hot You're Hot".  My brother managed to break both of them.  Hell was paid.

By making it a flashback.

VHM for use of the phrase "Great Cesear's Ghost" in a rock song. Especially in a song about Superman (since that's what his boss would blurt when he was pissed).

I saw the trailer, and it was quite a bit more edgy than I expected.  Not that a Tim & Johnny colab wouldn't be edgy, but I thought for sure they'd try to tone it down for the kids.

No, what I have is from the original, but if you recall there were 4 verses, each about 45 seconds long, that were sung when each of the 4 bad kids were dispatched.  This mp3 is just those 4 verses spliced together.

I'm all for it.  I've noticed other discussion sites that use the same app we do, but have much larger (in terms of pixel-size, which I assume equates to file size) avatars. I'm all for it. Since we have only 13 members, it can't amount to a whole lot of storage space.

Whatever you say. While I can manipulate the dimensions easily enough (80 pixels by 80 pixels) I haven't quite mastered the "density" if you will of the various layers of an animated gif. So, while that B & B gif I made fits the dimensions- it's still too big.

The problem, though, if you make an animated gif less dense (as in- not as many frames), the animation becomes so jerky as to induce epilepsy.

As Run DMC so once sagely said: "It's tricky".

OK, file size limit raised to 80K, if you can't do a cool animated gif in 80K, go back to Photoshop school!  Actually, you want to use ImageReady, which comes with a Photoshop install.

Another question for Geoff re: avatars. Is there some reason not to allow bitmap files as avatars? Right now it seems like everything I steal for avatar usage is a bmp, so I have to convert it to a gif or jpg to use it here.

There's no config in the back office that explicity says 'no bmp files,' but generally speaking, the only universal file types on the web are .jpg and .gif, with .png coming on strong.  BMP files are also notoriously huge in relation to the actual size of the image.  There must be tons of free programs that convert these things on the Windows side of the pond.
