Title: 12 Sept 2008: Dave's not here: a Classic from 1980
Post by: RGMike on September 11, 2008, 08:46:46 PM
Original title of this thread was : "Fear of a '90s Planet":

Quote
I'll change the thread title if Dave somehow surprises us, but I suspect we're in for a Nineties Friday.   A quick survey shows that in the past 3 months we've had '90 (twice), '91 (thrice), '92 (ditto), '93 (twice) and '95 & '96 (once each).  So we're sort of owed a '94 set (cue Weezer!) or perhaps the ever-elusive '97 -- we're still awaiting our 2nd visit there, iirc.

But I'd much prefer a theme of some sort; it's been ages since Strictly Instrumental.

But Dave's off (Webster's filling in), which means a '90s "classic" is still quite possible.

ETA: it's 1980, a month to the day (8/12) since we last visited this year.

not only has it been more than 2 1/2 yrs since a Strictly Instrumental set, it's been more than 6 months since Dave said, on air, that he was going to do one belatedly after my b-day request.  So I'm not holding my breath.

please elaborate -- I haven't exactly warmed up to him either, but I want to know what you dislike about him. Too young-and-snarky?

yeah, and just the wrong tonality of his voice. Not sympatico.  I don't wish him ill, he just doesn't do it for me.

He speaks with the same extra syncopation as Benson, not at all the smooth phrasing as Dave.  Sounds like he's performing, not
'talking'.

First heard January 3, 2007, duped on November 1, 2007, now a doubledupe classic.

I don't like being double duped, but I think instead I'll go see a matinee of Burn After Reading, where Brad Pitt plays a double dupe.

Mrs. Garrett shook Sue Ellen all night long!

WOS, though, to AC/DC; I deeply dislike almost everything I've ever heard from them.  Brian Johnson: worst vocalist in the history of ever.

The curse of the Northwest: no Portland date, just Seattle and Tacoma.

I'm less bummed about this than about David Byrne's skipping both Portland and Seattle. :(

True, he does sound a lot like Benson, w a similar "I'm On The Mic Hear Me Now" affect.  I don't find him that annoying, though -- unlike Annalisa who induces me to whine back at her in a similar sing song voice... "Hello you phenomenal person, you!  Here's more Counting Crows  .. (pause) .. Enjoy! .. . (another pause) ... On KFOG!"

My BOS's came early--the Squeeze and Springsteen tunes, with VHMs to the AC/DC, Devo, and E-Beat songs. Just a couple of frequent fliers left to go (although I rather like one of them).

I remember this one now--Dave was certainly lurking this day, as he copped an excuse for the XTC and pronounced the DS song "wan-duh-wuh".

We were out tonight with my kids for my youngest daughter's birthday (24!) and the subject of Webster came up, and they knew him from Alice, so we just agreed that I was just a grumpy old man.  I guess I resent anyone who's not Dave.
