I'd love it if we hit 1972 today. Just consulted the magic calendar (it knows all, it tells all) and learned that we have visited both 1971 and 1972 a mere ONE TIME EACH in Twenty-aught-five (vertical tastings don't count). Hell, we've been to '69 three times (don't go there...). I proclaim an official 1971-72 deficiency, and suggest we lobby DM until this is corrected.
-
Lobbying DM does nothing but antagonize him, as several of us have noticed at one time or another.
But Katrina in Blue Jeans does make it seem a good idea ...
-
aaack! 1990. Starting with Sean's bro and "No Katryth".
-
HM to "No Myth". I like this song. Dave plays it all the time but the heck.

Black Jeans actually, but I agree on both points.

LOL! Seems there's a bit of a divergence of opinion on the whole "No Myth" issue!

It's the Harrisonesque guitar. Dude! your avatar! Sweet!
-
Kiss This Katrina Goodbye. I'm almost ready to tune out already.

"you Dirty Sally"
Methinks a Katrina-fest is underway. Kiss this thing goodbye, indeed.

Dude! What does my tattoo say?! Heh. Thanks!
While I'll cop to a guilty pleasure of liking "No Myth", I could do without "Let's Kiss This Thing Goodbye". Alas, if only we could.
-
I can do without this one, too. "Just to win the love of a girl like you" -- what's wrong with just plain YOU? Boring song, too. My def. of corporate rock.
-
i'm not bumming i can't hear. i'm digging on beej's avatar. it makes times square more bearable.
-
FINALLY, something worth hearing. BOS to Ya Kid K and Technotronic. Fuck Felly, the fraud used in the video because Ya Kid K was too butch for video exposure.
-
VHM "Pump Up the Jam", lead singer switcheroo notwithstanding.
Make my day!
-
...aw crap, it's 1990
no shit Sherlock!
-
The Sweet make folks happy even when you can't hear the music. Thanks, everybody!
Best Zeitgeist of Set: "Make My Day" or Pump Up the Jam" or whatever the heck this song's called.

Princess - Sorry I couldn't get out for lunch. With the pres, VP, and sales staff all in FL for a meeting, I'm in charge of way too much and am trying to run payroll in the interim (the person who tallies hours undercuts everyone so I'm re-doing all his work).
-
Wrecking the national anthem may be several things, but "sacrilegious" is not one of them. Oh wait, I forgot, this is Biblevania, not America.
-
I detect a slight baseball theme in the clips here, between the Lurie announcement and Rosanne's vocal stylings.
HM to Put The Message in the Box. Only 'cause nothing else has come close. OK, maybe No Myth--I don't mind it either, for pretty much the reasons mentioned.
Whoops, I mean When the Rainbow comes. Right album, wrong song. But the rest of my sentiment applies. Great effin' album.

Times Square is pure sensory overload. Revel in it!

Private joke to POC: "One way or another ... we all puttin' a message ... IN A BOX!"
-
Nick of Katrina -- technically '89 but I guess it was still on the charts in 1990.

i'd like to put a message in jane!jane!jane!'s box!
i just spoke with her, by the way. i should have taken a picture. no one will believe how fine she is, and i don't remember what she looks like now. she comes to me in visions, but the image doesn't stay for very long.

Hard to believe something this real was part of 1990. Love it!

Was Unskinny Bop ever a hit? Totally got by me, but I was not listening to stuff like Poison in 90. More of a Narada, IMO.

It actually went Top Ten pop.

Which he borrowed from Davy Jones (Dee Snyder of Twisted Sister puts forth that Axel Rose stole the sideways crabdance from Davy Jones on one of those "I Love the Decade I Was Demographically Desireable" VH1 shows.

"I Love the Decade I Was Demographically Desireable" VH1 shows.
If this was your line you are a genius. (Not that you aren't anyway.)
-
I thunk it up all by meself. Thanks!
-
Oh shit, "Sex Packets". Sorry, I know this will win BOS and I'm baffled. Just baffled. Baffled then, baffled now.
-
"Only one thing safer than usin' your hand..."
This is some song.
-
I'm awarding BOS #2 to "Sex Packets". Even if it is a bit of a Katrina Packet.
-
"Total Genius"???
C'mon, Dave.
-

i never liked it as much as the humpty dance...
-
Pretty sad the Del Amitri wins BOS. Hard to believe they got an even bigger ton of votes than Jellyfish. More genius.
-
what was that about Big Rick playing one of these songs again later? Another ploy to get folks to listen longer?
-
I like "Sex Packets" well enough- but "genius"? I dunno.

people always have and always will sleep on the jellyfish. i don't know why. i think they're the greatest band since the beatles.

Dave knows, like, three rap records. So that makes him an expert

Rap artists Dave has played (to my knowledge):
Digital Underground
MC Hammer
Vanilla Ice
Young MC
Tone Loc
Gerardo
How I would love to hear "The Message" or "I'm Chillin'" during an '80s set ...

Any idea what any of them are up to now? Jason Falkner played guitar with Air a couple years ago and puts out the occasional solo record, but no clue what Sturmer and the Manning brothers are doing.

I don't think he's EVER played Young MC (wish he would) or Tone Loc. I'd've remembered that because "Bust A Move" is a personal fave. Unless it happened while I was on vacay in Nov. He's played Run-DMC (with Aerosmith) too. And I think "Rapper's Delight" once.

absolutely nothing. i've heard tons of stories about how they will never regroup (they were local cats, dig?), but i don't know why. i say andy's name credited somewhere as producer. and the mannings are working, but just not together...
-

I know the guy who directed the video for that. He lived in my dorm back at SF State. His name's Mark Solomon. He also plays the jilted groom at the end because the guy who was supposed to play the part didn't show.
The best part? Mark didn't even bother putting on a tux or a sport coat or anything to play the groom. He's just wearing one of his trademark striped short-sleeve shirts & jeans. Next time you see the video keep an eye out for him.
-

yeah, Peyt & Eli just don't get along.
Have you seen the Gatorade commercial with Peyton as a life-size action figure? some kid gets him as a b-day present.
-
well, i wish you good years for the rest of the week. i am off to paris. oh, blessed international flight sleep...

Yeah, I knew they were from hereabouts--a couple friends of mine worked with one of the Mannings at a Record Factory in Dublin.
Also, there's a folkie, name of Roger Manning too, based in NY I think. Not the same guy, no relation.

At long last, a worthy BOS: The King is Half Undressed.
I second that emotion.
I was out driving between customer locations & heard most of the set. This got my BOS too, & when I called in to tell Dave I also complimented him on the great segues, but none of you guys commented on them. Sure it was a Katrina laden set, but both the "Giants are moving to Santa Clara" into the "You Dirty Bird" clip AND the Gulf War clip into "The King Is Half Underessed" were truly inspired. I'd almost tape the set just for those moments tonight.
Anyway I told Dave that he was really on top of his game with the segues, and he said "thanks very much for noticing" in a really sincere & genuine way that showed he'd put some effort into them.
He still needs a whole new set list, but give credit where it is due.

You're right -- those are clever. I didn't even notice the "Dirty Bird" seg, and in our defense, I think we have such low expectations for '90s sets that all it takes is one or two Katrinas to put us on autopilot. Sad, but there you are.
