Title: Monday, sad sad Monday: It's 1980 again!, 3.28.05
Post by: Gazoo on March 28, 2005, 09:43:59 AM
I'll edit the subject line when I know the year.

In the meantime: Have any of you ever still be hung over Monday afternoon from Saturday night's drinking?  Wholly unpleasant.

I should be so lucky.  Neh, I started drinking pitchers of Sam Adams with my fellow Fantasy Leaguers at about 11:00 Saturday morning (we had our annual draft in Boston) and basically did not stop drinking until about 1am, when I allegedly passed out next to the door at Improv Asylum (I hope I wasn't used as a sketch prop).  Best estimate is that I had about 20 beers and two rum+cokes.

Dave sez it's 1980 for the second time today -- I'm betting we hear "Switchin to Glide" one more time. And "Rough Boys" too.  And Dave'll be the one to play "Call Me", I'll wager.

I bet you're right.  But hearing "She Talks in Stereo" is enough of a surprise that I'll grant him one Katrina.

What are the odds of Dolly's "9 to 5"?  How about Sheena's "9 to 5"?  I'd be pleased as punch with either.

How early did he start?  Gary Myrick is almost finished talking in stereo & it's only 9:59.

I'd say you're right on the Kings. And I'll take the Gabriel tune as a repeater, and Gary Numan's In Cars.

Here's another Gary to kick it off, Gaz' homie. Always tied this song in with the Kings song--they were hits right around the same time.

Has Dave ever played "Les Boys"?  Maybe for Pride?  In any case he has certainly played every other song off of Making Movies, which is of course just fine with me.  One of my top Desert Island disc choices.

Another VHM for "London Calling"

...phoney Beatlemania has bitten the dust...

I wonder if Marshall Crenshaw took that personally?

the closing track on Making Movies:

Les boys do cabaret
Les boys are glad to be gay
They're not afraid now
Disco bar in Germany
Les boys are glad to be
Upon parade now
Les boys got leather straps
Les boys got SS caps
But they got no gun now
Get dressed up get a little risqu銇ot to do a little S&M these days
It's all in fun now
Les boys come on again
For the high class whores
And the businessmen
Who drive in their Mercedes Benz
To a disco bar in old M?
They get the jokes that the D.J. makes
They get nervous and they make mistakes
They're bad for business
Some tourist take a photograph
Les boys don't get one laugh
He says they're useless
Late at night when they've gone away
Les boys dream of jean genet
High heel shoes and a black beret
And the posters on the wall that say
Les boys do cabaret
Les boy are glad to be gay

No, he was surprisingly coherent.  Said that it was hard but he just prays a lot and that's how he gets through it..."I'm a warrior.  I'm strong."  Actually sounded almost believable.

I never got a ruling on this from y'all before, how do you interpret this song: "When the world is running down, you make the best of what's still around"

is it an admonition to all: When the world is running down, you (should)make the best of what's still around.

or is it a thank you to the one who makes these hard times livable: When the world is running down, you make the best of what's still around (and I thank you for it).

I think it's an intentionally ambiguous line, part of what makes the song work so well. I have heard it both ways at different times.

How's that for a non-answer?

If you insist, I lean more toward your former interpretation, the admonition.

I like their harder stuff better, but I'm with you on the Beatles-homage angle. First time I heard it I thought -- "damn! they're ripping off 'Sexy Sadie'."  A few days later, someone called the moring show to make the same observation and Dave pooh-poohed the notion, which really surprised me.
