I'll edit the subject line when I know the year.
In the meantime: Have any of you ever still be hung over Monday afternoon from Saturday night's drinking? Wholly unpleasant.

only if Saturday night stretched right through Sunday afternoon.

I should be so lucky. Neh, I started drinking pitchers of Sam Adams with my fellow Fantasy Leaguers at about 11:00 Saturday morning (we had our annual draft in Boston) and basically did not stop drinking until about 1am, when I allegedly passed out next to the door at Improv Asylum (I hope I wasn't used as a sketch prop). Best estimate is that I had about 20 beers and two rum+cokes.

Dave sez it's 1980 for the second time today -- I'm betting we hear "Switchin to Glide" one more time. And "Rough Boys" too. And Dave'll be the one to play "Call Me", I'll wager.

I bet you're right. But hearing "She Talks in Stereo" is enough of a surprise that I'll grant him one Katrina.
What are the odds of Dolly's "9 to 5"? How about Sheena's "9 to 5"? I'd be pleased as punch with either.

How early did he start? Gary Myrick is almost finished talking in stereo & it's only 9:59.

I'd say you're right on the Kings. And I'll take the Gabriel tune as a repeater, and Gary Numan's In Cars.
Here's another Gary to kick it off, Gaz' homie. Always tied this song in with the Kings song--they were hits right around the same time.

Dolly odds are very good (it's a Dave fave). But Sheena's from '81

BOS to Stevie's "Master Blaster (Jammin')," which I don't think I've ever heard Dave play before.

Oops - I seem to recall them being on the radio and charts simultaneously. Wouldn't be the first time my memory goes revisionist.

Your arm's too short to hotbox with God!

yes, maybe bos if the rest of the set are chicago repeats.

BOS2: "London Calling." One of the greatest openings ever. So good that Me First & the Gimme Gimmes used it for their cover of "Elenore."

You're a lady
I'm a man
You're supposed
To understand...

Just occurred to me that we could get our Paul Hester tribute via Split Enz, as True Colors and I Got You were 1980 hits.
-
BOS John, just because you NEVER hear this one.

VHM Straits! Solid Rock, indeed.
Has Dave ever played "Les Boys"? Maybe for Pride? In any case he has certainly played every other song off of Making Movies, which is of course just fine with me. One of my top Desert Island disc choices.
Another VHM for "London Calling"
...phoney Beatlemania has bitten the dust...
I wonder if Marshall Crenshaw took that personally?

Or the Knack?
P.S. Props to RGMike for trotting out a Tony Orlando non-hit!

I'm unfamiliar with this one; can you elaborate?
Meantime, someone undoubtedly familiar with Les Boys, VHM to Jacko.
-
gosh - i can't decide! bos: straits, john, or mj?
-
BOS John, just because you NEVER hear this one.
Got a phone call & had to turn off the radio, what was it?
--mshray pretending to be Geoff
p.s. another VHM for Michael when he was still black.
p.p.s. Didja hear his call-in to Jesse Jackson's radio show yesterday?

the closing track on Making Movies:
Les boys do cabaret
Les boys are glad to be gay
They're not afraid now
Disco bar in Germany
Les boys are glad to be
Upon parade now
Les boys got leather straps
Les boys got SS caps
But they got no gun now
Get dressed up get a little risqu銇ot to do a little S&M these days
It's all in fun now
Les boys come on again
For the high class whores
And the businessmen
Who drive in their Mercedes Benz
To a disco bar in old M?
They get the jokes that the D.J. makes
They get nervous and they make mistakes
They're bad for business
Some tourist take a photograph
Les boys don't get one laugh
He says they're useless
Late at night when they've gone away
Les boys dream of jean genet
High heel shoes and a black beret
And the posters on the wall that say
Les boys do cabaret
Les boy are glad to be gay

Cleanup Time.
Nope, missed it. How many times did he say he loved everyone from the heart of his bottom, I mean the bottom of his heart?
-
Robert Palmer goes crazy on the marimba!
-
yeah, that'd be cool. you'd be a badass.
No, I'd be a Sweetback! :D
On second thought- 'Beej' is pretty cool- even if I'm not the only one. I definitely need to get my act together & form The United Beej of America for realsy.

No, he was surprisingly coherent. Said that it was hard but he just prays a lot and that's how he gets through it..."I'm a warrior. I'm strong." Actually sounded almost believable.

WOS Jim Carroll. Ugh.
-
26 reds & a bottle of wine.
A one-time Katrina, but in my book Jim Carroll has lately been de-Katrina-fied.
-
Whoa! That was a sharply biting segue Mr. Morey!
-
best segue of week: reagan reaffirming his opp to gun control into "driven to tears"

true, but that doesn't make me dislike it any less.

hey - what's going on? i hope this counts as one song.
-
best segue of week: reagan reaffirming his opp to gun control into "driven to tears"
especially when the opening line is "How can you say that you're not responsible?"
-
And it's a Police Twin-spin! As it should be.
Turn on my VCR. Same one I've had for years.
-

it probably will be two, Dave threw the 2-count-as-1 rule out the window a while back.
-

Me too, but Dave's played that rule both ways at different times.
Still holding out for the Kings.

darn. we could have heard robert john. :)
-
Nope, it's a wrap.
-

I never got a ruling on this from y'all before, how do you interpret this song: "When the world is running down, you make the best of what's still around"
is it an admonition to all: When the world is running down, you (should)make the best of what's still around.
or is it a thank you to the one who makes these hard times livable: When the world is running down, you make the best of what's still around (and I thank you for it).
-
"Michael Jackson right behind him".
Tee Hee.

I think it's an intentionally ambiguous line, part of what makes the song work so well. I have heard it both ways at different times.
How's that for a non-answer?
If you insist, I lean more toward your former interpretation, the admonition.
-
"Michael Jackson right behind him".

if michael jackson is right behind robert palmer, our planet may soon be short a ghost.

Hey, anyone have an opinion of this Jet song that they're playing post-set? I'm thinking I like it, obvious Beatles homage that it is, with mushy Ringo-esque snare sound and all. If somehow these guys end up playing Ka-Boom, I am SO there.

I like their harder stuff better, but I'm with you on the Beatles-homage angle. First time I heard it I thought -- "damn! they're ripping off 'Sexy Sadie'." A few days later, someone called the moring show to make the same observation and Dave pooh-poohed the notion, which really surprised me.

Yeah, I'd be there for Jet too...
-
Jet is currently touring with Oasis, so I don't imagine they'd have the free time to do Kaboom ...
-
Jet is fun to see. Seen them at the Warfield and Fillmore.
