Title: Yet another 10@10: "The Peak"
Post by: RGMike on March 28, 2005, 09:26:44 AM
On WXPK ("The Peak"), in suburban NYC (Westchester/Rockland).

http://www.1071thepeak.com/10at10/

They do stream their programming. Of course 10 in NY is 7 here... so if you're at work REALLY early...

I may check it out Friday, when I usually get to work between 7 & 7:15. But for Gaz, it's local time.

I see they use the "ten great songs from one great year" slogan, too. Wonder what the connection is to KFOG and/or DM if there is one? My first thought was that they could be another Susquehanna station, but their "Peak Music" page says they're owned by Pamal Broadcasting.

Ah, here's the connection: their evening DJ is Paul Marszalek, who according to his bio, was once Operations Manager at KFOG.

I remember Marszalek.  He was in charge in the mid-'90s.  I once emailed him, around the time Paul Simon's Capeman album came out, to inquire why they weren't playing it -- they did, after all, have 5 cuts from Graceland (then a 10-year-old LP) in constant rotation.  I suggested Fogheads might like to hear new Simon, rather than every Hootie clone (this was '97-ish) that came down the pike. He replied that he'd be more inclined to listen to me if my attitude were "less snotty". (!?!)

I'm listening to "The Peak" right now, they are indeed quite KFOG-ish.

Peaking now, with "Love My Way" presumably kicking off a set.  Which would mean 1983?

Wow, WAY off.  I don't have a sense of when P-Furs did their thing since Pittsburgh utterly ignored them (as they did most modern rock).

well, the Sinead and Alannah Myles are Dave staples, so what made this set better than one of his by-the-numbers '89-ers? Aside from the Posies, that is?

thank you! quite fitting since the presleys she were on oprah yesterday. from my mother: "she sang something about 'kick me when i'm up, kick me when i'm down,' and i thought 'she's not saying anything to me,' and what a shame for her father, 'cause he really had it going on."

Today's set is from 1984.  Nice long trailer for All of Me, a movie I'd totally forgotten about (God love ya, Lily), abutted by fairly predictable songs (Cyndi Lauper, U2).  I like these folks b/c their between-song snippets are rather inspired.

Ooh!  Some of y'all are gonna wish you'd gotten up early: Christine McVie's solo hit, "Got a Hold On Me."  Haven't heard this in ages.  Her usual understated elegance.  The more I think about it, the more I think I'd put her in my Top Ten Female Rock Voices pantheon.

Do they give a hint what the next day's year will be? or is it a "surprise"? I'll be early tomorrow, for sure.

I was on the phone so I missed the ending.  But you also missed the Bangles' "Hero Takes a Fall," best female Beatles impersonation ever.

Well, I'm here to get Peaked. It's 1980 today.  Which apparently is as far back as they go.  That's gotta mean serious Katrina-ism over the long haul , no?

Appropriately, we start with "I Can't Remember" (their target demo was barely born on '80 -- LOL!).

The jock before Mr Arrow referred to 10@10 as "10 great songs from one great year in the '80s", and since all the sets I know about this week were '80s, I'm assuming thats where they're centered. And yes, that would mean hitting every year twice a month.

Well that does't have to be so bad as long as (unlike Dave), they keep a database & actually refer to it before putting the sets together.

Remember last year when I had a long chat with Irish Greg at a SJ supermarket where I was one of about 4 Fogheads to show up for their promo?  And he told me that someone had sent Dave a 5 year spreadsheet of 10@10 songs?  And when I asked him the next day to forward it to us & he said Dave had deleted it?  Remember that?  Greg strongly implied that keeping databases is NOT the way Dave works.

which makes it very convenient for Dave to say "we don't play songs over and over."  In politics that's called "deniability"

Today's 10@10EST goes all the way back to the '70s!  So far I've heard "Rock 'N Me" and "The First Cut Is the Deepest" (Rod's version).

I didn't get to listen to much of The Bone's A-Z, but they played "Rock 'N Me" in the wrong spot, as if it were spelled "Rockin' Me".  I'm sure Gaz & Urth share this peeve.

I did get to hear one thing that massivley surprised me: BOC's "Cities On Flame with Rock & Roll"

Does The Peak's 10@10 repeat in the evening?

indeed they do repeat it at night.

Have you heard the new improved Bone? they've tweaked the format (apparently the stuff they played during A-Z was a setup for the new playlist) and are playing a lot more recent/current stuff. Going for those disenfranchised KSJO listeners.

It's 1992 on the Peak today.  Will be an interesting comparison to Dave's early-'90s snoozers.

Well, the theme from "Mad About You" was nice (surprised Dave's never pulled that one out). But here's the Indigos "Galileo". Very Moreyish.

Before "Galileo" was the Black Crowes' "Remedy," always welcome.

But a big ol' BOS to XTC, "The Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead."  What a great, great song.  About a year later, Crash Test Dummies covered it to almost equally strong effect (vox alternated between Mr. Bass Man and the Lady).

yes, I was confused -- I was thinking of "Police on my Back" from Sandinista.

But -- DAMN! -- that was one of the best '77 sets ever.  Of course NYC in '77 was the epicenter of US punk/new wave, and clearly the Peak assumes its target audience remembers all those CBGBs stalwarts. Few on the West Coast were aware of Mink deVille at that time.  Kudos to Rob!

I'm glad to hear it; you'd never know it from Dave's sets, tho' I think Joel Selvin played some Mink recently on his Sun nite Bone show.  And Little Steven is a BIG Willy deVille fan,

Last nite's Selvin show, BTW, was an hour of Zappa.

I don't know if I can claim 1977, but I sure knew who Willy DeVille was by '78. KSAN was all over them, as was KZAP up Sacto way. As I recall, they were the opening act at a Winterland show with Rockpile as support, and Elvis Costello headlining circa This Year's Model.

clips from Jurassic Park
something I didn't recognize at all
and now "Man on the Moon."

and now Kurt is all apologies.  Everyone is gay.

1984 BOS to Broooce, "Cover Me" -- always a favorite of mine.  I like Bruce best when he's vulnerable.

P.S.  I decided not to submit an abstract for that Bruce conference this fall at Monmouth -- the small print indicated that conference presenters would be expected to pay the regular attendee fee of $199, which strikes me as either absurd, naive, or fraudulently gouging (I'll take Door #3).

Well, it's hard for me to speak to that since I wasn't aware of radio in 1973 -- my never having heard "Brother Louie" in da 'Burgh could be as much due to lack of a '70s pop oldies format on local radio as to segregationism.  (Growing up, Pittsburgh had an oldies station that capped things at 1970, and a '70s hard-rock station, but "Louie" didn't fit into either.)

Ah, it was "So Long" by Fischer Z. A long-lost nugget that got NYC airplay. The Peak definitely knows its core audience -- NY'ers who were in HS or College in the '80s (now living in the 'burbs) and who were listening to WNEW-FM and WLIR back then.

compare, contrast, discuss...

Dave's 1987 set:

Georgia Satellites - Battleship Chains
Wang Chung - Everybody Have Fun Tonight (vinyl!)
John Hiatt - Thank You, Girl
Stabilizers - One Simple Thing (B-O-S!!)
Crowded House - World Where You Live
Squeeze - Hourglass
Chris Isaak - Fade Away
Bourgeois Tagg - I Don't Mind At All (vinyl!)
U2 - Bullet the Blue Sky
REM - Finest Work Song

Rob's 1987 set:

John Hiatt - Thing called Love
Greg Allman - I'm No Angel
F. Mac - Little Lies
Smiths - Shoplifters of the World
G Dead - Hell in a Bucket
Los Lobos - La Bamba
JCM  - Paper in Fire
Cure - Why Can't I Be You?
U2 - With or Without You
Sinead - Mandinka

Actually, except for the Smiths tune, the Peak's set was rather Dave-like.

Friday is my early day; the rest of the week I catch the last 10-15 mins. But as an ex-NY'er I find they come up with nuggets that only NY'ers would remember, especially in the late-'70s/early '80s sets -- that was when the punk/new wave thing was influencing AOR airplay back East.

Monday 5/9:

Elton, "Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word", which means either '76 or '77, as Blue Moves was on the cusp.

Tues 5/10: it's 1992.

Some REM followed by "Diz Knee Land".  I just pissed off President George!

Wed 5/11: 1983

Rob played Red Rockers' "China", too bad mshray's on the road.  Also "Just Got Lucky" from JoBoxers, Percy's "Big Log" (ahem) and INXS's "Don't Change".  And a Gaz/poc WOS: Jackson Browne's "Lawyers in Love". In all a bit better than Dave's Monday Katrinafest.

Wish I'd been around for the JoBoxers, a major favorite of mine.  But I needed my beauty sleep.  (I also need to get back into the gym: college reunion in 3.5 weeks!  Aaagh!)

Hey, who's that on the top left of the Peak pages, next to Sheryl Crow?  That's not Adam Duritz of Counting Crows, is it?  Yikes.

(Playing before the 10@10 set: Elton John's "A Word in Spanish," which I haven't heard in 10+ years.  Sounds better than I remember.)

Fri 5/13:

Hmm... the Peak's first theme set, it's 10 by Sting & the Police. Because... why?

Oh, Sting's in NYC this weekend.  Hope this is not gonna be a regular thing, tho'.

Eddie & the Hot Rods, "Do Anything You Wanna Do", which was huge on NY radio back then. Don't think I've ever heard it in SF.

Before that was Marley's "One Love," I missed everything before that.

And "Short People" really does sound like 1977 as I remember it.

I always thought he got a total free pass from the rock press about Julianne -- if Sammy Hagar had married some actress/model and then dumped her because she didn't want to have kids (supposedly the reason for the Bruce/Julianne split), can you imagine what a macho pig HE would've been made out to be?

Well, that is if anyone cared about Sammy Hagar! But, seriously- you've got a good point there.

OT: Wasn't that one of the factors involved in the Jennifer Aniston/Brad Pitt breakup? I mean, besides Angelina Jolie (whose good at adopting children).

Ah, but this is America- where you're supposed to get married so you can have kids. Or rather- have kids and not go to hell for fornicating. So, if your wife doesn't want to have kids- well, what are you supoosed to do? Stay married to such a heartless woman who won't procreate in a Bible-approved way? Bruce had no choice!

So... how many kids to Bruce and Patty Whatshername have exactly?

ETA: 3. He's got 3 kids. I wonder if any of them will grow up to be rock stars. In this twisted world- they'll probably grow up to be Republicans.

Woke up in time for the Smithereens' "A Girl Like You," which threatens to put me back to sleep.  Just feels kind of pedestrian to me.

Followed by their superior rivals, the Pixies (again), with "Here Comes Your Man."  Makes me want to revisit Frank Black's "Los Angeles," which I only remember for its dream-like coda and John Flansbergh-directed video (surrealistic futuristic bumper-cars traversing about a desert).

One of my all time favorite songs.  Actually, the song is a cover of a tune Stevie wrote for (I'm going to get this wrong) Syreeta.  Or someone like that.  It actually has words, or so I understand.  Never have heard it.

Obviously, I would hope Stevie did not write it 'for' Jeff Beck in the same sense as he would've written it 'for Syreeta.'  My memory has more to deal with the concept of letting someone use a song you wrote.  Like I said, Beck was supposed to get first crack at "Superstition" but Stevie decided to release it himself first.  I'm dealing with thirty year old pre-internet memories, so it's a little hard to dig up.  It makes more sense about Syreeta tho!

I musta been on the same wavelength, I listened to a block of Kinks on my CD while driving to work:  "Celluloid Heroes", "Dedicated Follower of Fashion", "Living On A Thin Line", "Lola", "Set Me Free", "Waterloo Sunset".  I even listened to "Living On A Thin Line" twice.

Wow, this IS the furthest back they've ever gone. Got here in time for "Money" by PF and at first assumed it was a Live 8 -themed set.

Weird set so far.  Tuned in for back-to-back covers I can do without (the Blues Bros' "Soul Man," Devo's "Satisfaction").  And then, Meatloaf's "You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth" -- which, strangely, I just heard several frat-boy types singing along with at a bar in Boston Saturday night.  Then Joe Walsh's "Life's Too Good" -- doesn't anyone else think the solos go on just a little too long? -- and finally, RGMike's BOS doubtless, Tom Robinson's "2-4-6-8 Motorway."

Gotta get to work now.  Will be a limited presence on the board this week due to increased workloads on all fronts (this is a good thing).

It's Mick Jagger's 62nd birthday, and so the Peak does its bit for the old git.  Surprised I'm able to tune in to an all-Stones set.  We started with "Sympathy for the Devil," now in "Dance Little Sister" or whatever that one's called.  Hoping for something from Goat's Head Soup, preferably "Tom Waits For No One."

I got excited -- I thought they were actually doing 1968!  KFOG played the new Stones tune earlier. Didn't catch the title, but one line was "I used to be your little rooster, but now I'm just one of your cocks" (!)

Man, I wish I could've - but I just got home after yet another long and eventful day.  Some fun to be had, though.  Tonight I met Franke (as in, of the Knockouts): He's the manager of a very Santana-like Latin-rock band called de Sol that I went to see tonight at the Mercury Lounge.  (How Santana-like?  When advised that they only had five minutes left to play, instead of jumping into their current single, "Karma," they closed with a cover of "Oye Como Va."  Fun for the crowd, but an inexplicably bad move for them professionally.)

KFOG has been playing that very single and yes it is VERY Santana-like. I suspect The Peak is playing it -- are they getting any airplay in NYC proper?

And is Frankie a Knockout? or at least a "Sweetheart"?

They're getting no love in NYC radio at all, which is really surprising considering the size of the Latino/a population here.  (New York has more Puerto Ricans than Puerto Rico.)

Franke?  Oh goodness no.  A pleasant, mildly fey, mildly overweight man vaguely resembling a pockmarked Phil Silvers sans the glasses.  Queasy yet?

Post by: ggould on August 09, 2005, 07:44:06 AM
always sweet to hear this on the radio.  This is the song that we thought sounded like Archie Bell and the Drells the first time we heard it.

Eyes Of The World
(Robert Hunter)

Right outside this lazy summer home
You don't have time to call your soul a critic, no
Right outside the lazy gate of winter's summer home
Wondering where the nuthatch winters
Wings a mile long just carried the bird away

Wake up to find out that you are the eyes of the world
The heart has its beaches its homeland and thoughts of its own
Wake now, discover that you are the song that the morning brings
But the heart has its seasons its evenings and songs of its own

There comes a redeemer and he slowly, too, fades away
And there follows a wagon behind him that's loaded with clay
And the seeds that were silent all burst into bloom, and decay
And the night comes so quiet and it's close on the heels of the day.

Wake up to find out that you are the eyes of the world
The heart has it's beaches its homeland and thoughts of its own
Wake now, discover that you are the song that the morning brings
But the heart has its seasons its evenings and songs of it's own

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own
And sometimes we visit your country and live in your home
Sometimes we ride on your horses Sometimes we walk alone
Sometimes the songs that we hear are just songs of our own

Wake up to find out that you are the eyes of the world
The heart has it's beaches its homeland and thoughts of its own
Wake now, discover that you are the song that the morning brings
But the heart has its seasons its evenings and songs of it's own
Title: Uncle John's Band
Post by: ggould on August 09, 2005, 07:47:26 AM
the Deadheads raised some money to buy a billboard to fight a Colorado anti-gay initiative, using the line from this song:

"Ain't no time to hate"

Uncle John's Band
(Garcia/Hunter)

Well the first days are the hardest days,
Don't you worry any more,
'Cause when life looks like Easy Street,
There is danger at your door.
Think this through with me,
Let me know your mind,
Wo, oh, what I want to know,
Is are you kind?

It's a buck dancer's choice my friend;
Better take my advice.
You know all the rules by now
And the fire from the ice.
Will you come with me?
Won't you come with me?
Wo, oh, what I want to know,
Will you come with me?

Goddamn, well I declare,
Have you seen the like?
Their walls are built of cannonballs,
Their motto is "Don't tread on me".
Come hear Uncle John's Band playing to the tide,
Come with me, or go alone,
He's come to take his children home.

It's the same story the crow told me;
It's the only one he knows.
Like the morning sun you come
And like the wind you go.
Ain't no time to hate,
Barely time to wait,
Wo, oh, what I want to know,
Where does the time go?
I live in a silver mine
And I call it Beggar's Tomb;
I got me a violin
And I beg you call the tune,
Anybody's choice,
I can hear your voice.
Wo, oh, what I want to know,
How does the song go?

Come hear Uncle John's Band by the riverside,
Got some things to talk about,
Here beside the rising tide.

Come hear Uncle John's Band playing to the tide,
Come on along, or go alone,
He's come to take his children home.

Wo, oh, what I want to know, how does the song go.

Meantime, I gotta say, I'm really enjoying this all-Elvis set, even more than I would have expected.  The alternate take on "Everyday I Write the Book" is far superior to the released version; was that recorded around the same time and rejected, or is that a recent revisiting?

BOS JoBoxers, "Just Got Lucky" -- TANC, it's been in my head since seeing 40 Year-Old Virgin last nite.  Hilarious movie and great soundtrack.

"You framed an ASIA poster?!?"

You gotta see it, Gaz, especially for the musical number at the end.

Concluding with another Morey fave, SRV. In all, a pleasant set... and '69 is on tap at the top o' the hour!

BTW Rob, we invaded Gren-AY-da, not Gren-AH-da.

OMG, the musical number at the end* KILLS!!!.  I won't say what it is to avoid spoiling the surprise, but it's worth the price of admission all by itself.

Mon 8/29/05: it's 1976. The stream's sounding crappy, but Ms Armatrading ("Love & Affection") and the Flamin' Groovies ("Shake Some Action") make it worthwhile.

ETA: OMG! Linda Ronstadt with Karla Bonoff's lovely "Someone to Lay Down Beside Me".

1977 on the Peak... thought I was listening to a Drive set for a minute: an obscure Steve Goodman song called "Videotape".

"Wouldn't you be in good shape
If your life was on videotape?"

followed by a George Carlin clip and then "Estimated Prophet."

ETA: also Blondie "I'm Always Touched by Your Presence" (it's really not cheating!) and Mink DeVille's "Mixed-Up Shook-Up Girl"!

Neat coincidence: The I Love Music message board was just talking about this Smithereens song "In a Lonely Place" today and its cinematic reference:

I was born the day I met you
Lived a while when you loved me
Died a little when we broke apart ...

Lovely stuff, and this from someone who's not really a fan.

"My Sweet Lord", "Big Yellow Taxi", the Allmans' "Revival" and BOS Sly, "Everybody is a Star".  Musical comfort food.

ETA: Rob also played "No Matter What", "Fire & Rain", "Who'll Stop the Rain", the Velvets' "RnR".

1985 sounds much like I remember it, with "Shout" and "Fortress Around in Your Heart."  Opened with a pair of October longings -- "Centerfield" and "Dead Man's Party" -- and now an obscure, forgotten Cheap Trick pre-comeback single, "Tonight It's You."  Interesting set, all told.

Good question.  Did we get 1972 on "the third of September" for a Temptations visit?

actually I won't be home in time.  But that clip is right up there with Grace at Woodstock, iconically speaking.

Autumn begins with some phoned-in Bonnie ("I Thank You"), some other stuff I forgot (including PF's "Hey You"), and something I've never heard from Dave, Fantasy Island footage.  And now, some amateurish new-wave wannabe-Elvis singing some "I gotcher number" nonsense.

Just got here and I'm trying to figure out who that could be.

Zep and B-52s "everybody had matching towels!"

oh it was the Jags -- "I got your number written on the back of my hand". Yes, very Elvis C (as Rob noted) -- but a great New Wave One Hit Wonder that got LOTS of NYC airplay at the time. Sorry I missed it, it's one of the few from that period I was unable to find a copy of, for my NWOHW mix tape series.

Indeed, it's all-Bruce as we celebrate his birthday.  I feel like I have the wrong perspective on him, missing his younger years initially and not knowing anything about him until he bought into Venice muscle-beach culture for "Dancing in the Dark."

And I'm just now reminded how difficult it is to make out his lyrics on "The Rising."  Should've been a bigger hit either way.

getting in shape (after being pretty damn skinny) is not the same as "buying into Venice Beach Muscle Culture".   But his makeover is another of those issues that Dave Marsh prefers to skirt. Certainly made the Boss more video-friendly, in any case.

Yay! "Be True"! a fave B-side (the flip of "Hungry Heart"?).

Wow, would have loved to have heard that. But since NY is a Bruce stronghold, he can get away with that stuff back there and people appreciate it. Out here, a lot of folks would go, "huh? what's this?"

Listened to the replay, major BOS to Lindsey Buckingham's "Go Insane."  Cocaine-induced paranoia never sounded so good, though the keyboards are a little dated.
