He was only 60, meaning he was barely 22 at the time of "Them Changes".

At 20 he joined the Electric Flag with Mike Bloomfield, at 22 played with Hendrix in Band of Gypsys, drummed for others, did prison time, then was the lead Calif Raisin in those '80's ads.

According to Wikipedia, Buddy's dad, George Sr., had played upright bass with Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Charlie Parker and Dexter Gordon.  Not bad!
