VHM for Wiretrain! back when 415 Records ruled the day.

VHM for Wiretrain!
correct yer subject line -- it's 1984.
Is this a breakout?
-
VHM Pretenders, the first of several inevitables. Bet on Prince and VH.

i knew you would know the name. i was a-toe-tapping, and i thought, "i bet this is the kind of song i like that mshray likes, too."

done, and no. I missed the intro but the LP was released in '83. Upon double-checking I see it peaked at 150 in '84, so no biggie.
I Just Love Chrissy's guitar work on "My City Was Gone." Totally head bopping at my desk right now.
...and Muzak filled the air from Seneca to Cuyahoga Falls

huey is sounding good.

regarding your toe-tapping, check out what Allmusic says:
The catchiest song on Wire Train's In a Chamber is also the LP's most misleading number. The bouncy "Chamber of Hellos," with its chiming guitars, jumpy percussion, dreamy vocals, and rollicking chorus, is actually about a homicide. Nevertheless, it's an addictive toe-tapper, a track that hasn't lost its aura of mystery more than a decade later.
guess they know what they're talking about!
-
huey is sounding good.
Remarkably, yes he is. At least in part because I haven't heard this song since Reagan was president.
-
huey is sounding good.
I wouldn't go THAT far. This always struck me as a McCartney rip-off, especially that riff.
-
I missed the Wire Train, catching the pair of katrinas instead. (Yes, MCWG has reached Katrina status. Sorry if this pees in anyone's corn flakes.)
When Hugh sings this live, does his sing "Five o'clock this morning morning"? Or does he have great echo effects?
-
PANAMA!!!
-
Bet on ..VH.
you're good.

Another notch in the crystal ball for RGM!
-
Nice call on the VH. "Panama" isn't my favorite of the Jah Roth oeuvre, but if you don't like this, you don't like fun, and there you are.

You are correct, it is a Katrina, it's one of those albums Dave MUST sample in an '84. As is "1984". VHM VH.
-
PANAMA!!!
I just imagined your Marvin The Paranoid Android making the devil-horns to that line, Beavis-style.

reach down

ease the seat back...

he probably can't afford the effects anymore.
i must say "panama" was one of the highlights in being in the band, teeze! i didn't play on this song, so i just watched the lead guitar player, rico mccalma, work his magic. that guy was amazing.
hey, i think people should say "toe-tapping" more often! :)
dude, mike is miss cleo today.

Make that two notches.
(Tim DeLaughter quoted this "dearly beloved..." bit at the Polyphonic Spree show at Bimbo's a few weeks ago during the intro to one of their songs. Got big laughs.
-
...electric word, "life",...
I'd much rather hear this than "When Doves Cry"

let's go crazy!!
Hey Ali, your quote & avatar go nicely together!
-
At least Dave goes with a different song from Purple Rain every time he visits 1984. All five singles get some attention, "I Would Die 4 U" less so.
Why he doesn't do the same for any other Prince record is anyone's guess.
-
wow, bos to elvis!!
i hope no one saw that.
-
Why he doesn't do the same for any other Prince record is anyone's guess.
Perhaps because PR was Prince's biggest seller and the peak of his popularity in general?
Elvis! VHM The Only Flame in Town. Coincidence? I think not.

and if you don't know, now you know, bobby! :) i think bobby would say, "brother," because he's classy like that. just look at his aristotles!

EEP! OP! ORP! AH-AH! (that means I Love U!)

the guitar wanker says vhm to srv. such a cool line...

Yeah but he also plays "Something in the Water..." which is relatively obscure, yet ignores Sign o' the Times and everything after it.

Another VHM for me, too. This peaked at #56*, along with "I Am The Walrus", CDB's "Long-Haired Country Boy", and a song from yesterday's set. Care to guess which one?
*I have been spending a lot of free time filling out my all-time Top 100 & there seems to be a few chart positions in the 41-100 range that have a whole bunch of entries.
-
hey, it's prince's "when you were mine"
-
BOS The Plimsouls "One in a Million"
Prehistoric Peter Case.
Saw these guys open for EC at the Greek circa 1982 or so.
-

wow, you're right. Who was it that covered WYWM? '60s guy, the record was produced by Mellencamp. Del Shannon? Mitch Ryder?
-
Return of the Katrina! Tracey appears after a rather lengthy absence.
-
OK, I know a few of you are groaning, but I don't care: to me this is complete ear candy, or as Dave says: A Perfect Pop Song. VHM to Tracy Ullman/Kirstie MacColl's They Don't Know.

sorry but this is the Romantics.
I loves me some Plimsouls & Peter Case, though.

I'll guess the Crash Test Dummies song, since most of the others yesterday charted Top 40 (and the La's peaked at #41, if memory serves).

Ack, you're right--that was my first thought and then something convinced me it was the Plimsouls. Think I was crossing it up with Million Miles Away.

damn! second bos to sammy!!!

Yikes! VH and Hagar in the same set. Dogs and cats living together...

you got it. Another bit of Chart trivia: What band of this era, which had both of their Top 10 entries in 1984, also managed to have a song peak at #41 not once, not twice, but THREE TIMES?

Ooh - I love trivia questions like this! Alas, I don't know this one -- although I think Scandal had two #41 hits preceding "The Warrior" ("Goodbye to You," and I forget the other one). Gotta be something that was re-released, which would make me think "I Melt With You," except Modern English didn't have any other hits. ZZ Top had "La Grange" spend 3 weeks at #41, but their top 10s came later, I'm sure. Got any other hints?

Actually part of my hint will be to clean up a slight innacuracy. Let me rephrase:
What band of this era, which had two of their four Top 10 entries (and another two of their total 13 Top 40 hits) in 1984, also managed to have a song peak at #41 not once, not twice, but THREE TIMES?
I have an additional hint if that doesn't do it.
p.s. the La's peaked at #49 according to Allmusic. Correct on the Scandal, though.

duran duran or hall and oates? i would think "notorious" for duran duran. but i don't have a clue what the h&o song could be.

nope. this group never hit #1 (unlike both of your guesses), and (HINT) their biggest hit was a song not sung by their lead singer but rather one of the other members of the group.

.38 Special? I don't know that they hit the top 40 thirteen times tho. I just know that most of their hits were sung by their bass player, not the Van Zant bro that fronted the band.

no, no, no. This was a quintessential band of the late 70's & 80's, a 10@10 regular, and their lead vocalist had a rather distinctive voice. When I first heard the ballad that eventually reached #3, I was quite surprised to learn which group it was. And I guarantee that you were, too.

Gotta be the Cars:
Biggest hits (1984) = "Drive" and "You Might Think"
And I know they had a few songs just miss the Top 40, but didn't know any of them hit #41 three times! "Dangerous Type"?
-
OH.
WAIT.
You mean, three #41 hits, not one song hitting #41 three times, right? D'oh!
"Dangerous Type" is definitely one of the three for the Cars. I keep wanting to say "Touch and Go" is another one but I think that one did better.

f**kin' cars.

I've never heard any of these.
And to be pedantic, "Why Can't I Have You" (the final single from Heartbeat City) preceded "Tonight She Comes" (the single from the greatest-hits comp, which I actually thought was 1986.
