Title: 14 January 2008--it's 1971!
Post by: urth on January 14, 2008, 10:02:58 AM
As promised!

And it's a teenage wasteland--Baba O. to lead off. Great tune, VHM, but I'll hold my BOS vote for awhile, methinks.

Extended version of the Nixon/Haig Pentagon Papers phone recording we've heard a few times before. This time Kissinger and (I believe) John Haldemann are heard as well.

Followed by Paulie & Linda, Too Many People.

#5--Buddy's goin' thru Them Changes again.

Good enough set so far, still hoping for that elusive nugget to put it over the top.

Excellent stuff, Maynard.  Always happy to hear Long John Baldry.

No first-timers yet, but Temptation Eyes is most likely to get my BOS vote as well as Best Burton Cummings impression of Set.

JT is walkin' on down that Country Road. Def. sounds like '71 here. And Mike reminded me that we were promised a Carpenters tune--should be up soon, I think the JT was #8 or 9.

BOS2, Lou Grant.

Mary:  Where you going?
Lou:  To get more professional.

Likely the closest we'll hear to a bustout today, Wadsworth Mansion and Sweet Mary. Don't recall this getting much play out here back in '71.

Guess we forgot to mention Mahvin's What's Goin' On. And Long John Baldry got the popular BOS--fair enough.

Meanwhile, not a Carpenters track to be heard. Guess it got bumped by Wadsworth Mansion or maybe the James Taylor.

That's too bad, since I realized "Goodbye to Love" is from '72 -- meaning any Carpenters tune he played in '71 woulda been a bustout.

Baldry and Grass Roots get BOS votes on the replay, with HM to Wadsworth Mansion predicting how JT and Carly would open "Mockingbird" a year or two later.

"That's the least I can do."  The same applies to his lyric-writing capabilities.
