Dave said he had a "great" 1971 set planned, that would include Long John Baldry and the Carpenters (gee... 3 guesses as to what those 2 songs were), but when he found out that Maverick's is tomorrow, he decided to dredge up a surfing set he did some years back. So '71 will be Monday.
-
I don't recall the Surfin' set he's referring to (haven't checked the DB yet), but it won't be hard to pick at least a few of the songs:
Surfin' Bird
Surfin' USA
Little Old Lady from Pasadena
Surfer Girl
Surf''s Up
How many Beach Boys songs can he squeeze into one set?
-
Two girls to every boy! Yay!
-
BOS1 Miserlou, the inimitable Dick Dale. More fun with reverb!!

also "Beach baby", for all those surfers in... San Jose?
-
BOS TradeWinds, "NY's a Lonely Town". This would seg nicely into "No Surf in Cleveland" by the Euclid Beach Band (produced by Eric Carmen) but I'm not holding my breath.
-
I keep my "woody" INside, if you catch my drift...
-
Just occurred to me this could be the shortest set ever, 'cause all these surf tunes are like 1:48.
Surfer Joe, very cool. Haven't heard this in decades.
-
Surfer Joe, go man go! I feel like I've stumbled onto a Little Steven show.
-
Surfer Joe wins!
I'm enjoying the set, but don't seem to have much commentary
-
What's this Surfer Joe tune? It's quite terrible, and borrows pretty heavily from Monster Mash.
-
How could we forget "Wipe Out!" BOS2 -- maybe the Ramones cover of "Surfin Bird" is coming up?

yeah, it's a pretty cheezy novelty, and certainly doesn't qualify as a rock record. But that was what the charts were like in '63 or thereabouts.
-
Urth scores again -- his third predicted song comes true. Not the Ramones version, sadly. papa-oo-mow-mow!
-
BOS3 "Ride the Wild Surf" -- one of the best surf songs, from the film of the same name (one of the best surf movies).
-
So what's this string-laden instrumental? Sounds like it could almost be Phil Spector's take on surf music.

And the buzzer sounds at 10:26.

I thought so too, and we were right, over and done in 26 minutes.

I'm not recognizing -- sounds like the theme from '60s British TV show -- something that would've topped the UK charts for weeks. OMG! it was Jack Nitzsche! So the Spector connection is there.
-
How could we forget "Wipe Out!"
TANC of the Day: I'm listening to CBS-FM and they're playing "Wipe Out" -- in honor of the stock market being down over 200 points. Yikes.
-
I only heard the question for the bonus segment before a cow orker interuption, not the tune or what Fogheads might have answered. But I seriously wanted to call in and answer "Beach Blanket Scrabble!"
Just for fun. :P

Not sorry I missed this. But the Turtles -- who started out as a surf-rock band -- did a parody-ish song called "Surfer Dan" and a serious surf instrumental called "Buzzsaw" on their Battle of the Bands LP.

this is so cool. I'm going to be busy all day, so unless this gets played at 8:00, I'll miss it. Miserlou, New York's, Surfer Joe, Wipeout, Surfer Girl, Surfer Bird, and the Lonely Surfer are all BOS in my book! Also, as I remember it back in 7th grade, I remember Surfer Joe being the flip side of Wipeout. I loved that tune!
