A first!

and our first Katrina-in-the-making: Chumbawumba. BOS from me..  Methinks Dave might dare to play Hanson, or at least I'm hoping.

I had a hunch this would be our day for '97; I very nearly posted a predictions list last nite. Of which Chumbawumba woulda been one.

I was actually enjoying listening to the radio in '97 more than I had been for years (of course it was mostly Alex Bennett, Steve Masters & Big Rick over on Live 105).

Indeed -- Gaz & I have also commented on what a great year it was. The "rebirth of pop" and all that.

Beg to differ. Check the 2003 turkeys set. Although I will concede it does seem an odd choice.

Unsuccessfully, I'm happy to say (it's awful, but it's still protected parody). And this from Wiki:

"The song was voted the fourth "Worst Number One of All Time" in a VH1 poll, and was featured in spot #32 on VH1's "Most Awesomely Bad Songs... Ever" countdown. An unrelated VH1 countdown, VH1's 100 Greatest One-hit Wonders, rated it #88."

Well, that was a lot more interesting than any '90s set in memory, even with 3 WOS's from me.  Tonite I'll dig out my Best-of-'97 mixtape and see what other goodies we might've heard (or will, in the next '97 set, which may be nearly a year away, based on experience).

But I'm jealous of Urth, who managed to get thru 1997 (and indeed the next 10 years) without having heard Barbie Girl until now.

It totally got by me, something for which I feel very fortunate. But it's indeed as bad as everyone says.

And I imagine Mattel sued because if they hadn't, it could have been construed as not defending their trademark, which in today's courts is tantamount to abandoning it altogether.

This was a HUGE hit.

Trivia: It marked the first time an artist debuted in the Top 10 with its first charting single.  It happened again soon afterward with Shawn Colvin's "Sunny Came Home" and then became a bit more commonplace in the American Idol age.

I believe they were Swedish.

I've posted this in the past, but some songs from memory that would be great in the next visit to 1997:
Space, "Female of the Species"
Squirrel Nut Zippers, "Hell"
No Doubt, "Don't Speak" or "Sunday Morning" or "Spiderwebs"
OMD, "Walking on the Milky Way"
Poe, "Angry Johnny" (this might have been late '96)
R.E.M. w/ Patti Smith, "E-Bow the Letter"
White Town, "Your Woman"
U2, "Discotheque"
Chemical Brothers, "Setting Sun"
Portishead, "Sour Times (Nobody Loves Me)"

I'm sorry. This is a terrible set from a terrible year in music. It gets worse if Dave plays 1998. I'll say this though, I respect Hanson over the other "Teen pop music" (i.e. Backstreet Boys, N Sync, Britney) because they actually play their own instruments.

Live 105's glory days for sure (even if they did shitcan Alex Bennet that year). Worth noting, I think, that of the 10 songs

Quote
1.  Chumbawamba - Tub Thumping
2.  Paula Cole - Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?
3.  Bruce Springsteen - Secret Garden
4.  Verve - Bittersweet Symphony
5.  Hanson - Mmm Bop   (BEST O' SET)
6.  Third Eye Blind - Semi-Charmed Life
7.  Sheryl Crow - If it Makes You Happy
8.  Sister Hazel - All For You
9.  Aqua - Barbie Girl
10.  Duncan Shiek - Barely Breathing

only the Bruce, Sheryl Crow, Sister Hazel and Duncan Shiek were actually being played by KFOG in '97. Maybe the Cole too, but I don't remember hearing it much. I *do* remember listeing to Z-95.7 a lot that summer because they were playing "MMMMBop" every 2 hours, like clockwork -- the only station in town that was playing it.

Ben Folds Five, "Battle of Who-Could-Care-Less"

Oh, thank you for reminding me of these two - both major faves of mine, and a big part of why '97 was such a great year to discover San Francisco.  Both courtesy of Live 105, so great at the time.

Live 105's glory days for sure (even if they did shitcan Alex Bennet that year). Worth noting, I think, that of the 10 songs

Quote
1.  Chumbawamba - Tub Thumping
2.  Paula Cole - Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?
3.  Bruce Springsteen - Secret Garden
4.  Verve - Bittersweet Symphony
5.  Hanson - Mmm Bop   (BEST O' SET)
6.  Third Eye Blind - Semi-Charmed Life
7.  Sheryl Crow - If it Makes You Happy
8.  Sister Hazel - All For You
9.  Aqua - Barbie Girl
10.  Duncan Shiek - Barely Breathing

only the Bruce, Sheryl Crow, Sister Hazel and Duncan Shiek were actually being played by KFOG in '97. Maybe the Cole too, but I don't remember hearing it much. I *do* remember listeing to Z-95.7 a lot that summer because they were playing "MMMMBop" every 2 hours, like clockwork -- the only station in town that was playing it.

The 3EB track was in rotation as well, IIRC.

another future 'trina, methinks: it's a "Bitersweet Symphony" all right.

another hm to richard ashcroft, though.

I'll always be grateful to this song for garnering me $800 or so on "Rock & Roll Jeopardy," but I confess I've always thought the song overrated.  Though I really get where Starsailor took its vocal cues now.

i've never liked the song, either. but i love richard ashcroft solo.

Dave plays one of Ginger's favorite '97 tracks, Sister Hazel "All For You"

Ginger just dropped a notch in my esteem ;)

but it's such a FUN song! glad i ducked out after hanson. geesh - what a painful set.

Hope you liked "This is England" as much as I did. Great little film.

i loved it! i was speechless for an hour after seeing it.
