A theme set to kick off the new year--don't think Dave's ever done this one before.
(Mike beat me with his thread, but when I'd deleted mine, I discovered he'd done the same.)

in 15 years of 10@10-ing, I can't recall Dave ever doing a New Year's set. I was kinda expecting 1997 to finally pop up today. Hope this gets better than "Let the Day begin."...

Much better with the looooong version of "Beginnings". (embarrassing error deleted)

the loooooooooooooooooooooooooong version of "Beginnings". Any other suggestions?
-
VHM New Radicals -- this'll be a Katrina when '98 rolls around on the wheel, fo' sho'.
Dave wouldn't dare play "Let's Get it Started", would he?

the set is on an upward tack so far--liked the Chicago tune, LOVE You Get What You Give (I'm still not convinced this wasn't Karl Wallinger recording under a pseudonym). Where to next?

Or Todd ;)

After leveling off with the Stones tune, we're on the way up again. BOS2 to New Gold Dream (Eddie-one, eddie-two, eddie-three, eddie-four, as I mondegreened it back in its heyday).
-
BOS for "Once You Get Started". Excellent stuff. Is this Rufus?.
Google confirms it. Dude, it's prog-funk!

It appears that any reference to beginning or starting is all that's needed for inclusion in this set. VHM, Dr. Winston O'Boogie.
-
Starting Over reminds that there are not one but two murder-of-John movies opening this month. Sheesh.

Could "Let's Go" be the obligatory Cars song?
-
Speaking of prog-, BOS again for Ambrosia.
-
Proxy of cairo: Ambrosia.

Once hopes not. Fervently.
BOS3 Ambrosia, Time Waits For No One. Dude, THIS is prog.

"Don't Stop thinkin' about tomorrow" -- a subtle Hilary endorsement?

WOS GD.

I really like "Throwing Stones", but I don't see the connection.

Have to agree, but I'd bet a sawbuck it gets the popular BOS vote.

I was listening sporadically in car, didn't hear theme. It obviously wasn't the year, then I thought I figured it out: bells! The start of the Lennon tune, and the Ambrosia tune was full of them! Well I was wrong, and I don't dig this pretentious progressive doowah, but I noticed today the T. S. Eliot quote for the first time:
For decisions and revisions which a minute will reverse.

Don't be hatin' ! Who gets the sawbuck?

We all woulda got a buck & change had they won BOS but (thankfully) Fogheads gave a rare display of taste ;)

pretty much in line with New Radicals and Fleetwood Mac, and the rest re: the Onward Ever Onward theme:
And the radical, he rant and rage,
Singing someone's got to turn the page.

Sorry, no diss on the Dead, but I was never a big fan of this song (admittedly I was in the minority among Deadheads on that one). For all their skill at improvisation, I thought they played it pretty much the same way every time they hauled it out, which was too often for my taste.
And nobody took me up on the bet, so the sawbuck stays with me. ;D

I agree that it's not in the typical mold of the improvisational GD tune, and being as Bobby works out his songs to great detail (listen to his part on China Cat for example) it probably still sounds the same, although I haven't seen Ratdog in over a decade, so I don't really know. I just think it's a good song for ecopolitical issues. I always like the line Picture a bright blue ball,
Just spinnin', spinnin, free.
Dizzy with the possibilities.

I'm rarely one to defend the Dead, but I've long been impressed by the stanza "shipping powders back and forth / singing: black goes South and white comes North." BOS to Chaka and the gang, and I wonder what the name is for that whirring-into-stratosphere sound effect that "Once You Get Started" shares with Kool & the Gang's "Summer Madness," and then via sample thereof with the Fresh Prince's "Summertime." I really dig it.

Dang! I heard the replay but didn't realize what a great bonus track I'd missed. If only Dave would play that in its year on the spinning wheeel.
