Title: 16 November 2007--it's...Clapping songs?!?
Post by: urth on November 13, 2007, 08:14:37 PM
Yep. Somebody wrote Dave a note, suggested if they could do whistling songs, what about clapping songs. So this Friday....

Btw, Dave wrote the mother of all blog entries (which is where I found out about the...clapping...songs.

http://www.kfog.com/Blog/Blog/ViewItem.asp?Entry=1985&id=35

So here's what the listener suggested:

Beck - Where it's at
Elvis Costello - Welcome to the working week
Ben Lee - Catch my disease
Cake - Opera Singer
They Might be Giants - Particle Man
Simon and Garfunkel - Cecilia
Badfinger - No Matter where you are
Queen - We Will Rock you
Rose Royce - Car Wash
the Clash - Rock the Casbah

I'm adding:

Ballroom Blitz-Sweet
Saturday Night-Bay City Rollers

...just for starters.

Yikes. Couldn't we just rerun the "cowbell" set instead?

This isn't promising.  I'll offer Archie Bell & the Drells' "Tighten Up."  But I'm afraid the "Friends" theme will show up.

Que "The Clapper" commercial clip.

clap on

clap off

Speaking of which, I saw a commercial where they are marketing (just in time for Christmas) a Clapper for situations where clapping might not be a good idea.  Basically, it's a, um, light switch.  What will they think of next!?!

Do you suppose Dave's familiar with "Everybody Stand Up and Clap Your Hands" by Fred Parris and Black Satin (formerly the Five Satins)?  It's an obscurity from the Buddah box set.

Possibly, but "Fogheads choose" recognizable songs, mostly.  Hey Gaz, guess what song Brian "the Cannon" Bannon just played on WLNG -- he musta known I was listening today.

I still remember the very first time I heard this, sitting in the parking lot at my very first job, listening to one if the big Top40 stations in NY, "99X", at the height of thedisco era.  And this came on... I was like "WTF?" (before "WTF" existed!) and I *had* to listen to the end to find out who it was. I was 10 minutes late for work.

Fully agree that synthisized handclaps should be disqualified, but Rosalie played some for the bonus anyway--Fogarty's Centerfield. For once, nearly everything in the set was better than the bonus.

Indeed, 'tis true, and Nina was pissed.  She thought the Animals' rendition kinda dumb.

Well, Nina's entitled to her opinion, but as time goes by, I think Eric Burdon's early work is holding up pretty well.  I just had me a little tour through 30-second samples in iTunes, and there's a lot of interesting versions.  The song holds up very well under many voices, and I guess even under Santa Esmerelda!
