Yep. Somebody wrote Dave a note, suggested if they could do whistling songs, what about clapping songs. So this Friday....
Btw, Dave wrote the mother of all blog entries (which is where I found out about the...clapping...songs.
http://www.kfog.com/Blog/Blog/ViewItem.asp?Entry=1985&id=35
So here's what the listener suggested:
Beck - Where it's at
Elvis Costello - Welcome to the working week
Ben Lee - Catch my disease
Cake - Opera Singer
They Might be Giants - Particle Man
Simon and Garfunkel - Cecilia
Badfinger - No Matter where you are
Queen - We Will Rock you
Rose Royce - Car Wash
the Clash - Rock the Casbah
I'm adding:
Ballroom Blitz-Sweet
Saturday Night-Bay City Rollers
...just for starters.
-
Car Wash for sure.
Stones Start me up has a few claps
Eric CLAPton songs

Yikes. Couldn't we just rerun the "cowbell" set instead?

This isn't promising. I'll offer Archie Bell & the Drells' "Tighten Up." But I'm afraid the "Friends" theme will show up.

if you doesn't play Shirley Ellis' "The Clapping Song" then the whole thing's bogus.

Que "The Clapper" commercial clip.
clap on
clap off
Speaking of which, I saw a commercial where they are marketing (just in time for Christmas) a Clapper for situations where clapping might not be a good idea. Basically, it's a, um, light switch. What will they think of next!?!
-
Eric CLAPton songs
No, save those for the CRAPpy set

Agreed, and Clap for the Wolfman would make for some nice cheeze.

Do you suppose Dave's familiar with "Everybody Stand Up and Clap Your Hands" by Fred Parris and Black Satin (formerly the Five Satins)? It's an obscurity from the Buddah box set.

Possibly, but "Fogheads choose" recognizable songs, mostly. Hey Gaz, guess what song Brian "the Cannon" Bannon just played on WLNG -- he musta known I was listening today.
-
"Car wash", the obvious TOTHK. Clap On!

BOS for ThMaR. Claps are very important in this one.

Whoa, so this is a surprise--an alternate take of the Beatles I'm Looking Through You. Serious BOS candidate here.

Def BOS from me, just for rarity's sake. A highlight of the week, actually, which is saying something.
-
I don't suppose we'll hear "The Clap" by Yes, but it would be wasted anyway since Rich is out of town this week.
-
Woo Hoo! BOS2 Santa Esmeralda!!

Damn, that didn't even occur to me--that would have ruled!

I still remember the very first time I heard this, sitting in the parking lot at my very first job, listening to one if the big Top40 stations in NY, "99X", at the height of thedisco era. And this came on... I was like "WTF?" (before "WTF" existed!) and I *had* to listen to the end to find out who it was. I was 10 minutes late for work.
-
WOS for any song that gives me a visual of sucking on a chili dog.
that's one way to get the clap. or is it?

WOS, SA - TUR - DAY Night.

And then came...the Cars.
-
WOS2 for "Since You're Gone". That doesn't sound like real clapping to me. Should be disqualified.
-
WOS, SA - TUR - DAY Night.
agreed.
i take that back. wos - the cars.

That clinches it -- there's a Cars song for every occasion. But I wish there wasn't.

"tater sticks"? I think those are actual McDonald's-style thin fries, however.

This is giving the Beatles some strong competition. BOS3, fo' sho.
VHM to S&G. Paulie, quit obsessing on your complexion--you'll regret it...
-
yay! BOS4 S&G -- you can get the clap from being a cunning linguist -- unless you get up to wash your face.
-
BOS for ThMaR. Claps are very important in this one.
could you be less obscure so those of us who read along know what you mean by ThMaR?

BOS5 Stealer's Wheel, "Everyone's Agreed..."
This sounds different than what I'm used to--perhaps an alternate mix, or earlier version? Another BOS in any case.
-
A less-than-promising concept turned into a very entertaining set, IMHO. But I hope they rerun the "cowbell" set next Friday.

Steve Miller "Take the Money & Run"
And urth was right -- the Stealer's Wheel *was* a "slightly alternate version"! Good ears, bub!

WOS2 for "Since You're Gone". That doesn't sound like real clapping to me. Should be disqualified.
Missed the set because of an overly long phone call with my boss, but not only is "Since You're Gone" not real clapping, there is a much better Cars song with real clap-along clapping: clap clap clap-clap-clap clap-clap-clap-clap, Let's Go!

BTW, there's also a Garland Jeffeys song with the line "She's gonna suck on my chili dog". Jus' sayin'...

Fully agree that synthisized handclaps should be disqualified, but Rosalie played some for the bonus anyway--Fogarty's Centerfield. For once, nearly everything in the set was better than the bonus.
-
VHM for Santa Esmeralda. I remember this one. Had never heard the Animals original. The loooooong version.
True story: Some months after I moved to NYC, I went to a bar on West 4th called Absolutely 4th (guess "Positively" is trademarked) where they were doing karaoke. I selected this song to sing. Not knowing that it was ... the loooooong version.

VHM for Santa Esmeralda. I remember this one. Had never heard the Animals original. The loooooong version.
I had never heard this disco version, I enjoyed the Joe Cocker version, but wasn't sure about the Animals being the 'original.' If you believe Wikipedia, and most of the time I do, Nina Simone sang it first.

Indeed, 'tis true, and Nina was pissed. She thought the Animals' rendition kinda dumb.

Well, Nina's entitled to her opinion, but as time goes by, I think Eric Burdon's early work is holding up pretty well. I just had me a little tour through 30-second samples in iTunes, and there's a lot of interesting versions. The song holds up very well under many voices, and I guess even under Santa Esmerelda!

The Belle Stars were great! and totally overshadowed by Bananarama.

"clap yo' hands and prepare to pat!" If you'd told me last week that I'd hear Shirley Ellis 3 times in less than 24 hours I'd've said you were crazy.
