promo last night said some b-day clubber is going to get lucky today.
Guess we're not getting "10 10@10's on 10/10" this year.
-
a VT that's going to take us "all the way back"? Meaning... '67 thru '76? could it be?
-
Dave says we're going "pretty much all the way back".
Yum! Can't wait!

"all the way back" to a Jinx!
-
OMG a 1961 VT.
Cool
more back than we imagined.
-
1961 !!!! ???? !!!!
OMFG I'm majorly impressed. Pat must give some seriously good head to make Dave do this. And he's not even Latino
-

'61-'70, OMFG!
-
I've never actually thought much of "Bristol Stomp". Pretty disposable, even in '61. But BOS Chris Montez!

I am speechless.

I am speechless.
That's what speechwriters are for. VHM for the JFK inaugural.
-
BOS2 "Sally Go Round the Roses", very much ahead of its time.
-
BOS the Jaynetts, Sally Go 'Round the Roses. This was covered by a band from Austin called the Damnations about 8 years ago, which was where I first heard it (wash't really following the charts in '63, alas).
-
BOS2 "Sally Go Round the Roses", very much ahead of its time.
Very cool, don't think I've ever heard it. BOS.
-
well how could I not BOS3 the Big "O"? Mercy!

If 64 ever came up on the wheel, it would almost certainly be a Katrina by now.

likewise from me.
-
where's Gaz? he'll be flabberGAZted to have missed this historic set.
quite a dance-oriented set, eh?
-
here's the only part of a VT in the Db from this time of the year and this range of years, from last Nov 3rd. Kicked off in '67.
1967. Who - I Can See For Miles
1968. Beatles - Revolution 1
1969. Elvis Presley - Suspicious Minds
1970. James Taylor - Fire & Rain
-
BOS4 ? & the Mysterians, one of the seminal singles of the era -- where would New Wave have been without "96 Tears"?
-
another BOS for "96 Tears"
-
another BOS for "96 Tears"
I need this for my iPod....
-
This guy Pat is hitting on all cylinders, imo. The Gentrys tune (Keep on Dancin') is another one I learned about via a cover version (the Skeletons, pride of Springfield MO), but everything we've heard so far has been top-notch.
Ah, Jackie Wilson, a longtime Davefave. Deservedly so.
-
way to suck up to Dave by requesting "Higher & Higher", Pat!
-
BOS Higher and Higher (an easy choice)
-
Hee hee, just blew off a client call. "Can I get back to you in about 15 minutes?"
-
Great Moments in Rock History: The Grass Roots discover the horn section. BOS5 "Midnight Confessions"
-
I can pretty much guarantee this will be the first set in the Saturday morning marathon.
-
I can pretty much guarantee this will be the first set in the Saturday morning marathon.
This is likely to be the shortest set ever as well. Will be done before 10:30 unless Pat has chosen an epic from 1970.
-
VHM CCR, BOS6 J-5.
Shortest set in living memory!
-
My god, for a sec when the harpsichord started I thought we were getting the Partridge Family, but it turned out to be a *real* family band. I'll take this anytime. BOS10 J5, I'll Be There.
-
Another BOS for the Five. Great set, this is.
-
Great set but I missed the intro, got to try and catch it tonight...
-

This is one of 4 Jackson 5 songs that Dave plays in 1970, along with "I Want You Back", "ABC" & "The Love You Save".
-
I like the fact that Dave is talking about Next Time already.

well, technically they only HAD 4 hits in '70; even I'm not crazy enuf to expect J-5 album tracks, even if a couple B-sides ("Who's Lovin' You", "I Think I Found That Girl") got serious AM play.

10/10/2007 - Wednesday-A Vertical Tasting
10 GREAT songs from 10 GREAT October 10s. 1961 to 1970
1. The Dovells - Bristol Stomp (The kids look sharp as a pistol)
2. Chris Montez - Let's Dance
3. The Jaynetts - Sally Go 'Round The Roses
4. Roy Orbison - Oh Pretty Woman (BEST OF SET!!)
5. The Gentrys - Keep On Dancin'
6. ? & The Mysterians - 96 Tears (BEST OF SET!!)
7. Jackie Wilson - Higher & Higher (BEST OF SET!!)
8. The Grass Roots - Midnight Confessions
9. CCR - Green River
10. Jackson 5 - I'll Be There
No bonus track listed on the KFOG page, but I think it was Maggie May. I caught just the end, but that would be the right year.
Anyone else notice that the sound fidelity seemed to get a whole lot better around 1966?
-
I have a deep distaste for the Dovells, Montez, and Gentrys tracks, but that's overshadowed by the sheef OMG-ness of going so far back. BOS on the upcoming replay to "Sally Go 'Round the Roses," which Grace Slick and the Great Society used to cover in concert. Apparently some people believe it's about closeted lesbianism. "They won't tell your secret ..."
HM to Grass Roots, a song that used to hit very close to home for me. And to the J5, which I TANCoincidentally heard last week at the dentist's.

Yes, Grace used to sing this song too. Tim Buckley too if my old brain still works. When I first noticed the "ahead of its time" comment, I was waiting for the other shoe to drop, and here it is. I doubt that it's about closeted lesbianism, but I have no standing to make that judgement. I do however realize I've been partly 'mondegreening' this song all this time (yes, I remember the original). I used to always sing along "Roses, steak and perfume" even while hearing that "the roses they can't hurt you!"
For me, 1961 was the borderline between the old rock and the modern rock.
-
I'm really diggin' it, only into 2nd song, but it already feels too quick. Can't we linger just a little bit longer?
-
Not really my kind of music but considering how rare this is for KFOG, I guess it's OK. They must of really dug really deep to find these records. I'm sure most aren't in the normal library.
-
listening closely, I could swear the chorus echoes "The roses want to tell your secret" even after the lead sings "They won't tell your secrets." I could clearly hear the extra syllable.
I've heard Pretty Woman so many times, it doesn't seem like an oldie!

I'd never heard the lesbianism theory before today, but by "ahead of it's time" I simply meant that in 1963 girl-group records didn't sound like that. It's not about a guy. It's very later-'60s folky. Quite the anomaly.
-
classic fake fadeout!
-
reminds me of listening to the KPFA punk show, and hearing this as a proto-punk classic.

Yes, I agree with you about the whole sound. It was very exotic back then.
-
This is probably one of those "perfect" records. Bubblin' bass line, crisp rhythm guitar, great backup singers, and that voice!
-
This is quite striking to me. 1961/1962 is the start for me of a constant listening to the radio, every day, every week, waiting to hear the top 20 (or 30 or 40, depending on the station) and taking it all very seriously. By the time we hit CCR, I'm in college, and as much as I like the Jackson 5, was no longer listening to Top 40 radio by 1970.
"Just look over your shoulder!"

From your mouth to Dave's ear.

I'm sure this mostly comes from Dave's home library. An enviable collection.

I can pretty much guarantee this will be the first set in the Saturday morning marathon.
Shockingly, no. It's starting in a few (currently 12:38pm EST).

the order today was 1977, 1969, 1983, VT, and as usual saving the worst for last.

Very happy to have been wrong -- I'm wondering how closely they monitor the reaction to these things.
