I know Dave consideres this the "right" version (it charted R&B, but not pop) but I'd like to hear the Paul Nicholas at least occasionally.

Shore got that right.  I heard this Saturday night while having dinner before the Richard Thompson show at the Mountain Winery.  It was swell as well.

Indeed, nice set so far. The Dan is sounding particularly good--great lead-off track to a great album. Love the Pete Christlieb tenor solo here.

So outrageous...

I rang in the New Year with a musician friend and some of his pals.  He started playing this on the piano a bit after midnight and we launched into an impromptu singalong.  Turns out I'm passable on the low harmony on this.

But BOS to Dolly, and Proxy of Cairo - a small wedding gift from Maestro Dave?

HM to Todd, in another case of Dave preferring another over the hit version (I doubt he's ever playedx ED&JFC's Top 10er from '79 or '80).

Demerits, though, for rhyming "down and out" with "hope's run out."  And that "man in your heart" line always makes me cringe, too.  But the big blowout drums at the end seal it for me.

I was/am one of them, and very nearly posted to this effect, asking why the twin-spin.

A black cow with root beer?  That sounds like a brown cow to me.  I can't believe she gave it to him for that.

I'd always heard it described as that -- a Coke float is just a Coke float, but a Root Beer float is a Black Cow.  But then I've never worked as a soda jerk.

Well, hmmm.  Guess I really don't know.  But I thought it was a coke thing.  Oh well.

To be fair, Steelyu Dan had plenty of other songs about coke things.  "Glamour Profession," frinstance.
