Title: 19 July 2007--it's 1986
Post by: urth on July 19, 2007, 10:10:19 AM
Peter Gunn, Invisible Touch, and In Your Eyes in the 1, 2 & 3 slots.

Is it any wonder '86 is considered such a culturally bankrupt year around here?

No disagreement from me. although I think In Your Eyes is still a great song which has just been played *way* too much.

Indeed -- Say Anything helped that along.  Peter Gunn is always fun, IMHO.  There's good stuff in '86 if Dave'd just think outside the box.

OOOOWWWWW! Knock ya out! BOS JB, props to the late great Dan Hartman for writing/producing.

Black coffee -- and a hard roll!

I'd have to concede that point.

On the other hand, while not a standout in JB's overall repertoire, in 1986 it definitely is. Possible BOS, barring any surprises. Or Replacements.

Songs that Dave has played once or twice (i.e. not asking him to go too far outside the box) that I'd like to hear again today:

Jeff Beck   Ambitious
INXS   Listen Like Thieves
Rush   The Big Money
Smiths   Bigmouth Strikes Again
Timbuk 3   Future's So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades
Cameo   Word Up

ladies & gentlemen, was that the loooong version?

Here's Mr Hornsby. He called his band the Range, tho' they didn't actually have any   At least it's not "The way it is" -- so VHM.

and i said, "teacher!" i said, "teacher! what the hell happened?!"

one of the teachers started crying before the rest of us caught on. then kids started crying witout even knowing why they were crying. they were just crying because one of the teachers was crying. then about two minutes later the rest of us caught on.

I always liked "Life's What You Make It", and it's a good segue out of the Challenger clip, but it is now also one of the biggest Katrinas in any year.

Looking back, I note that on June 13-14, we also went to 1979 followed by 1986. And on May 10-11, we did '86 followed by '79. Odd, eh? Or not.

Any Smiths tune would be fab. Ditto the Cameo. and any of these:

Crush on You -- the Jets
Dreamtime - Daryl Hall
Live to Tell or Papa Don't Preach - Madge
We Don't have To Take Our Clothes Off - Jermaine Stewart
Velcro Fly -- ZZ Top

This was still pretty early morning on the west coast, I had just gotten to work & turned on the radio.  My former roommate Dave was both a big space buff (he'd already seen one shuttle launch) and a late sleeper.  So I called him, woke him up & told him to turn on the TV.  Now when he's asked 'Where were you when...' he tells how I woke him up with the news.

It was a bitterly cold day in NYC; I was off, so I guess it was a Monday or a Tuesday, And I was listening to the local alt/new wave station, which NEVER did news during the day, and so when they cut in with a bulletin, i knew something big was happening.

One of THE classic Reagan quotes.

Those are all good, but other than "Papa Don't Preach", Dave's never played any of 'em & no reason to think he would.

This is a Narada.  I was actively listening to this stuff, and heard two or three other tracks off of this album on alternative stations, but never "Dreamtime".  Plus, according to both my memory & AMG, this album came out in 1987, but Dave always plays this & "Ghost Train" in '86 sets.

Maybe someday he could play "Big In America" or even better, "Always The Sun".

Tempted to BOS Lives in the Balance, just because the lyrics ring so true today, even more than in '86.

"I've been waiting for something to happen
For a week or a month or a year
With the blood in the ink of the headlines
And the sound of the crowd in my ear
You might ask what it takes to remember
When you know that youve seen it before
Where a government lies to a people
And a country is drifting to war

And theres a shadow on the faces
Of the men who send the guns
To the wars that are fought in places
Where their business interest runs

On the radio talk shows and the t.v.
You hear one thing again and again
How the u.s.a. stands for freedom
And we come to the aid of a friend
But who are the ones that we call our friends--
These governments killing their own?
Or the people who finally cant take any more
And they pick up a gun or a brick or a stone
There are lives in the balance
There are people under fire
There are children at the cannons
And there is blood on the wire

Theres a shadow on the faces
Of the men who fan the flames
Of the wars that are fought in places
Where we cant even say the names

They sell us the president the same way
They sell us our clothes and our cars
They sell us every thing from youth to religion
The same time they sell us our wars
I want to know who the men in the shadows are
I want to hear somebody asking them why
They can be counted on to tell us who our enemies are
But theyre never the ones to fight or to die
And there are lives in the balance
There are people under fire
There are children at the cannons
And there is blood on the wire"

Actually "Lives In The Balance" is pretty far down a rather lengthy list of Ktrinas for this year. M & the M's is worse for instance.

Last year I suggested to Dave that he do a Nelson Mandela tribute set on July 19th.   Hope he lives another year so we can do one for his 90th.

I had skipped school that day and was watching game shows (as I typically did when skipping school).  They cut into "Sale of the Century" to show the launch, and I was pissed off: I was never awed by space exploration.  So that's where I was when it happened.

When I saw this post earlier, I assumed you were referring to "Simply Irresistible," a more successful duplication of "Addicted to Love."  Just goes to show what the mid-'80s were all about musically.
