As promised, HFH is back this Friday. Dave is soliciting candidates on his blog page.
First one to spring to my mind (and I know he's played it before, but still...) is Playground in My Mind. Positively hideous song.

I've always found it rather sweet. Seriously. And Clint Holmes is doing a helluva Johnny Mathis imitation. I've gotta try to come up with recent HFS -- the set is usuallly '70s/'80s skewed.

"My Humps" would be a good place to start. Or maybe "Milkshake."

My Hits! my Hits! My lovely Hellish Hits! Agreed, tho' I'm more interested in HFHs that are also KFOG staples (Alanis' "Ironic" would be one example).
I think the most recent songs to appear in HFH sets have been Celine D's "Titanic" theme and (in a covers-from-hell set) the hideous Pearl jam version of "Last Kiss".
As to "Milkshake", I'd pick Gwen Stefani's "Hollaback", which always struck me as a total ripoff of Kelis's hit --and a miilion times more annoying.
-
Kinda hard to post Hits-From-Hell suggestions on Dave's blog when the automated censors delete the word "hell". LOL!
I suggested Celine's "*anic" and they censored the first 3 letters of that song *le.
-
I hope it's a new group of songs. We don't need the same 10 as we've heard in the previous sets (so no Pina Colada song).
-
I'm looking forward to this as always, but I can't help but suspect this will be the standard "Dave asks for suggestions and then plays the usual suspects".

I feel the same, which is why I did a little research yesterday & posted the following on Dave's blog (still the latest comment as of this morning)
For a little historical perspective, this will be the 6th Friday 13th in the past 36 calendar months, and the first in that span to be a straight HFH set. It got skipped the last 2 times in favor of a really good (I thought anyway) Bad Luck set in April, and a 1970 set last October. The two preceeding sets were both "HFH Vertical Tastings" (Jan '06 & May '05) and the one before that was "HFH - When Good Artists Go Bad" (Aug '04). Out of those sets the only repeat offenders were "Mr. Roboto" & "That Girl Is Mine". And the only song mentioned above to appear in the past 3 years is "We Built This City".
So Dave, I think you can't go wrong (or is it right?) with any of these, and I'll only add Henry Gross "Shannon".

Nice job, sir. I'd forgotten about HFH VTs -- those were actually pretty good, as I recall.

i can't listen to the stream. it keeps stopping before it starts.

Connect through the KFOG website instead of the link here. I had the same problem.
-
PS: Why didn't I nominate "This Is Why I'm Hot"?
-
"We Built This City" followed by 9 songs from the '70s? My prediction, alas, is coming true, methinks.
-
Oh, come now. If "We Built This City" had been performed by anonymous Brits with overdone haircuts, it would be revered as a fun one-off. I defiantly proclaim it BOS.
-

Wouldn't've got played anyway -- hip-hop isn't on Dave's radar, therefore he can't judge what's good or bad.
-
EJ & Kiki??? WTF???
-

Maybe so, but I think context counts for something. It was done by a bunch of ex-hippies and their hired hands, so expectations were different than they would have been for your anonymous Brits.
One question: is WBTC as reviled in other parts of the country as it is here? I'm thinking that the fact that SF is referred to in all but name might have something to do with its disdain here.
-
EJ & Kiki??? WTF???
No kidding. If we gotta have an EJ song, I'd put Island Girl or Philadelphia Freedom ahead of this. DGBMH is just fluff, not major cheeze.
-
still can't connect (even from kfog site). doesn't sound like i'll miss much, anyway.

ummm, yes.
here's what Wikipedia has to say:
In April 2004, the song was awarded "the #1 Most Awesomely Bad Song Ever" by Blender magazine,[1] in conjunction with a VH1 Special of The 50 Most Awesomely Bad Songs...Ever. In order to qualify for the distinction, the songs on the list had to be a popular hit at some point, thus disqualifying many songs that would by general consensus be considered much worse. Blender editor Craig Marks said of the song, "It purports to be anti-commercial but reeks of '80s corporate-rock commercialism. It's a real reflection of what practically killed rock music in the '80s."[2]
-
EJ & Kiki??? WTF???
Not an obscene song.

Agreed. More of a guilty pleasure in my book.
-
aaaackkk!!!! Neil Sedaka.
No I don't want to have your baby!
Yuck!

I like Island Girl and Philly free.

Likewise. Furthermore, unless this was a phone in request that I missed on the Mornign Show, Dave has plenty of bonafide Foghead suggestions to choose from.
Well, now we have "Having My Baby", which is the 3rd song from the blogposts out of 4. So I guess he's sticking to it pretty closely.
-
aaaackkk!!!! Neil Sedaka.
No I don't want to have your baby!
Yuck!
Well then how about Paul Anka's? I don't think you have to worry about Neil.

I completely agree with Gaz -- it's a song about corporate co-option, no? It's nowhere near the blatant commercial crapola Starship would go on to do ("Nothin's Gonna Stop us Now", anyone?). But sadly it IS reviled elsewhere, as it ranked #1 (iirc) on that VH-1 worst-of-all-time list.
Now here's one I agree with: Paul Anka. But VHM Odia Coates, who shoulda had a bigger career.
OMG! "Gitarzan" -- Ray Stevens made far worse records than this.
-
correction. Paul Anka. Sedaka, Anka..... whatever.
Awful.
-
Now here's a HFH bustout--Guitarzan!!
And again with the laugh track.
-
OMG! "Gitarzan" -- Ray Stevens made far worse records than this.
I would vote this BOS in a straight up set. It is not a hit from hell, it's not even a guilty pleasure. It's at worst a turkey.

ROTFL!!!!! actually he did get a woman preggers. Once. Daughter Dara must be pushing 50 by now...

Gotta head to an appointment, but here's another blogpost song.
I'll hear the rest in my car.
Have a great weekend everyone!
-
So after saying this was a '70-centric set, Dave plays 2 '60s hits in a row. "Honey" is pretty hellish, tho'.
-
Macca 'n' Jacca: making their 3rd HFH appearance in 3 years. And this is '80s, Dave. Whatever.
-
So after saying this was a '70-centric set, Dave plays 2 '60s hits in a row. "Honey" is pretty hellish, tho'.
And follows those with an 80s tune--Macca & Michael didn't start collaborating til at least '82, right?

Indeed -- people tend to forget that this was on Thriller -- was the leadoff single, in fact. But then "Billie Jean" came along and everything changed.

A turkey is precisely what it is.
HFH-est of Set goes to "Feelings," which I managed to not hear in its entirety for almost 30 years until now. Thanks, Dave.
-
Finally -- the '90s make an appearance. "Macarena" is truly horrendous. The Xmas version is even worse.
"it ain't what you do, it's the way that you macarena"
-
Not questioning Macarena's HFH status, but when was this a hit? Ninety-something? 70s-centric my left clavicle.
-

so's poison oak.

Well, the artists were IN their seventies . . .
-
Just now reading the blogpost, I would have seconded the vote for "Torn Between Two Lovers," which I actually heard in a Vietnamese restaurant last weekend.

Checked AMG--I'm amazed at the list of chart hits Ray Stevens had, beginning in 1961 and extending thru 2001 (although the last 20 years were strictly on the country charts):
"Mr Businessman", one of his rare "serious" tunes, is a lost gem, "Everything is Beautiful" is still lovely. And "I need Your Help, Barry Manilow", a pitch-perfect Manilow parody, bombastic production flourishes and all, is a personal fave.
And I've sung the praises of his countrified cover of "Misty" many times here.
-
1962 Ahab the Arab Black Singles 9
1963 Harry The Hairy Ape Black Singles 14
(head spins into ground, all the way through to the other end of the world)

I've managed to never hear that song, and I can't help reading the title as "Where have you gone, Barry Manilow, a nation turns its lonely eyes to you." (Sorry.)

The web stream upcut Annalisa mid-sentence and it sounded like she was saying "Tits from Hell". LOL!
And her bonus is "Kung-Fu Fighting", a turkey maybe, but no HFH.
-

I've weighed in on this before, but Blender magazine is the last place I would trust for value judgements. Their list of worst guitar solos was so stupid.

1961 Jeremiah Peabody's Poly Unsaturated Quick Dissolving Fast Acting Pleasant T Pop Singles 35
For those of you not old enough to remember, the whole title was:
"Jeremiah Peabody's Poly Unsaturated Quick Dissolving Fast Acting Pleasant Tasting Green And Purple Pills"
yummy
-
10. Los Del Rio - Macarena
My HFH BOS. There's just something I like about the rhythm, the synth parts, the laughing, and the memories of the Democratic Convention!
-
07/13/2007 - FRIDAY THE 13TH!! OH NO...IT'S HITS FROM HELL!!!!
7. Paul McCartney & Michael Jackson - The Girl is Mine
How could two great artists put out not one but two hits from hell? McCartney is great and you also add a third hit from hell he did with another great artist in Stevie Wonder (Ebony and Ivory).

The phrase "past their prime" seems to be the operative term here--at least in Macca and Stevie's case. And Jacko's just weird.
The HFH set is being replayed right now, 9am Saturday, if anyone's interested in reliving it. Dave's birthday set was the first one up at 7am.
-
10. Los Del Rio - Macarena
My HFH BOS. There's just something I like about the rhythm, the synth parts, the laughing.
all of which are samples being repeated over and over and over, no? The record sounds like it cost about 39 cents to make.
