Title: 21 June 2007--it's...1995
Post by: urth on June 21, 2007, 10:00:48 AM
Something 80s or 90s is what I'm feeling.

Yep.

Roll to Me leads off, followed by Deep Blue Something's Breakfast at Tiffany's. Nothing earthshaking so far.

Breakfast At Tiffany's warrants at least a VHM.

based on the few other times we've been to '95 I predict Heather Nova "Walk This World" & U2 "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me".

This is also the right year for Timbuk3 "Legalize Our Love", but I'm betting we don't hear it until tomorrow.

It's a Champagne HeatherNova in the sky!

She wants you to come.  It's OK.

A bona fide bustout.

But Dave seems a bit confused about the songs on Monster, which came out in fall of '94.  This was the first single, and as such belongs in '94, which is when Dave has played "Strange Currencies" and "What's the Frequency Kenneth?".  The former was the last single and only charted in '95, and the latter is eligible in both years.

This is the 5th ever set from 1995, and these two appeared in 3 of the first 4.  So Heather is now 4 fer 5.

That raises a good question: Has DM ever played Oasis in a set? Wonderwall would go down well.

And Mark has officially won the 95 Crystal Ball award. U2, present and accounted for.

Ooh, Jeff Buckley on 10at10.  That gets my vote for sure.  He never got played on KFrOG, did he?  I've only heard him on Radio Paradise.

No & Yes.

There are actually a number of Oasis cuts taht would work in '95--Live Forever also charted as a single, and Definitely Maybe came back on the charts in '95 at #58 after having been #1 in '94 (or maybe it was still on its way down, but regardless it did chart in '95).

OOOooo, handsdown BOS to Jeff Buckley. Talk about dying too soon.

Now that Heather Nova & U2 are officially uber-Katrinas at 80%, Jeff Buckley's "Last Goodbye" becomes the first song to achieve 3 fer 5 status in a 1995 set.

Remaining candidates (I'll go out on a limb and say we get at least one more) to join Jeff are:

Danny Tate - Dreamin'
Dionne Ferris - I Know
Joe Satriani - You're My World
Morphine - Radar

Mike could tell you, I was out of the country then.  But see above, Dave plays him.  And here's Dionne.

I can't say either--wasn't living here yet in '95.

Holding fast on my BOS to Jeff Buckley, but I'll venture a VHM to One of Us. Major sledgehammer for me, of a week spent in Massachusetts in the early fall of '95. This was on the radio then, and I heard it everywhere. I remember walking thru Harvard Square in Cambridge with this buzzing in my head.

As I mentioned before, we had only been to 1995 4 times previously.  It's worth noting that our first visit was Jan '04, and then we went 3 times in 4 months during 2005, the last being June 30.

So just under 2 yrs since our last visit. We've already had two '96 sets in that span, and fwiw, one of them contained "One Of Us".

And here we are nearly halfway thru '07 and no visits to '97 yet at all. Not sure if that's a positive or a negative:

But here's what we heard today:

06/21/2007 - Thursday. The Big Wheel stops on...1995!!

1.  Del Amitri - Roll to Me
2.  Deep Blue Something - Breakfast at Tiffany's
3.  Van Morrison - Days Like This
4.  REM - Bang & Blame
5.  Heather Nova - Walk This World
6.  U2 - Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me
7.  Jeff Buckley - Last Goodbye (BEST OF SET!!)
8.  Dionne Ferris - I Know
9.  John Hiatt - Cry Love
10.  Joan Osborne - One of Us

BONUS TRACK:  John Lee Hooker - Chill Out, Things Gonna Change

yes - kfog played his "last goodbye" when the album was released in...'95? can't quite remember. but i know i heard it on kfog. then i went to tower to buy the album, and ended up leaving with a cassette of some live performance in nyc instead. i wasn't too disappointed.
