Per Dave's blog, this Friday is graduation songs.
http://www.kfog.com/Blog/Blog/ViewItem.asp?Entry=1720&id=35
The woman that suggested the set offered up two suggestions:
Don Henley "Age of Innocence"
John Mayer "No Such Thing"
And DM added Good Riddance (which he referred to by its better known title, The Time of Your Life) and something called The Sunscreen Song. ?!?
He wants six more songs to complete the set.
I'm loathe to mention it, but you just know someone's going to suggest Closer to Fine. And probably My Old School, too. There's gotta be something a bit less trite we can suggest. Comrades, your mission is clear.

something called The Sunscreen Song.
"Everybody's Free (To Wear Sunscreen)," a minor charter for Baz Luhrmann (!), adapted from a graduation-speech-like humor column that for a while was mistakenly (hoax-ly?) attributed to Kurt Vonnegut. It's a borderline HFH but worth hearing for this occasion.
And you can't do this list without "The Future's So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades."

"To Sir With Love", anyone? I'd prefer "School's Out" to "My Old School", tho' I suspect we'll get both.
Funny I was just thinking the other day that Dave's never done a back-to-school/end-of-summer set for late August. ("Summer's Almost Gone", "Summer's Almost Over", "Autumn Song" etc)
-
A pop tartlet called Vitamin C had a minor hit a few years ago called "Graduation (Friends Forever)." It sounds exactly like you'd think.
I'd also suggest two songs I alluded to in my high school valedictory address: "We Are the Champions" and "Everybody Is a Star."

Floyd, another brick in the wall
Diana, i'm coming out
Absolutely, to sir with love. just watched the movie about a week ago.
-
Diana, i'm coming out
Er... no. That's NEXT Friday...
-
Dave,
The recently deceased Bobby "Boris" Pickett had a minor hit called "Graduation Day" that I haven't been able to find on iTunes, but has been recovered by others. It's schmaltzy to say the least, but now that I've finished my first year as a full-time teacher, it would be fun to hear.
Thanks,
Geoff
PS,
Upon closer review, in iTunes, the Beach Boys credit their version to the Four Freshmen, which is probably older that Pickett's! There's even a version by Laverne and Shirley!

Laverne & Shirley Sing! is one of the great cheezeball novelty LPs of the '70s. They had an almost-hit with a cover of Connie Stevens' "16 Reasons".

You can interpret it a few ways. I take it the same way you do but it can apply here as well. Lyrics are pretty benign. Taking the next step. Breaking out......starting a new page in your life.

"You Get What You Give" is an interesting choice. Not on the blog suggestion list.
-
Oh, "You Get What You Give" is a nice choice for this. Possible BOS of set, definitely Best Appearance By Danielle Brisbois Of Set.

I always liked the little falsetto GiveItToMeNow they throw in there.
...that and rhyming Hanson with Marilyn Manson
-
Nice, New Radicals, You Get What You Give. Great tune and good advice to boot.
Come around, we'll kick your ass in...
-
a fork stuck in the road...Dave pretty much guaranteed this one.
-
green day. boring.
-
Oh, what the hell: BOS to "Sunscreen" just for the novelty and WTF-ness of it all.

Nicely sentimental tune, but glad they got it out of the way early. Ditto for the Sunscreen Song.

i'll go with that. unless dave plays lulu, of course.
-
Too much resonance of "Deteriorata" in "Sunscreen," I'm thinking now.

hmmm...good call. wait - i instinctively read "desiderata," but i'm pretty sure you're referring to that scam.

Dead on.
Btw, I heard one line as:
U2 will get old.
I thought they already were. <rimshot>

If we're giving out BOS votes based on the WTF-ness of it all, then mine goes to the Ramones.

I'm kinda thinking the same thing, although I admit it's partly for who was singing the song. (Btw, I think that was off Joey's only solo album, Don't Worry About Me. Prescient title.)
-
HM to "No Such Thing," reminds me of sunny days in Boston Common.

(You are a fluke of the universe.
You have no right to be here.
Whether you can hear it or not,
The universe is laughing behind your back.)
Go placidly amidst the noise and waste, and remember what comfort there may be in owning a piece thereof. Avoid quiet and passive persons, unless you are in need of sleep. Rotate your tires. Speak glowingly of those greater than yourself; and heed well their advice, even though they be turkeys. Know what to kiss - and when. Consider that two wrongs never make a right, but that three do. Wherever possible, put people on hold. Be comforted, that in the face of all irridity and disillusionment, and despite the changing fortunes of time, there is always a big future in computer maintenance.
(chorus)
Remember the Pueblo. Strive at all times to bend, fold, spindle, and mutilate. Know yourself. If you need help, call the FBI. Exercise caution in your daily affairs, especially with those persons closest to you... That lemon on your left, for instance. Be assured that a walk through the seas of most souls would scarcely get your feet wet. Fall not in love, therefore, it will stick to your face. Gracefully surrender the things of youth: the birds, clean air, tuna, Taiwan - and let not the sands of time get in your lunch. Hire people with hooks. For a good time, call 606-4311, ask for Ken. Take heart in the deepening gloom that your dog is finally getting enough cheese. And reflect that whatever misfortune may be your lot, it could only be worse in Milwaukee.
(chorus)
Therefore, make peace with your god, whatever you perceive him to be: hairy thunderer or cosmic muffin. With all its hopes, dreams, promises, and urban renewal, the world continues to deteriorate. GIVE UP!
(chorus)

OMGWTF! It's the Natalie Merchant and Michael Stipe version of "To Sir With Love"! Dave scores a few points, though Lulu would have been grand.
-
the 10,000 maniacs version?!?!? blasphemous.
ok. i admit. i bought the single when it came out.
still...i'll bos for mr. stipe.
-
To Sir. I want the original!
Still a lovely duet. SHe has a nice voice.
-
There are some good thoughts being expressed here but too much of this set is sounding like the regular KFOG playlist (John Mayer, New Rads, Foo Fighters).
I think the Joey tune will likely be the vote I actually cast.
-
nice enough song, but not quite sure what accoustic Foo Fighters is doing here. (ETA: especially if we don't get Timbuk3  )
Once again Dave makes a big deal about getting suggestions on his blog & then ignores half of them. At least we got "To Sir..."
-
okay, here's an obvious one that no one on the blog thought of, BOS #3 CSNY.
-
LOL! Nice tongue in cheek selection - "It's Money That Matters"

I think he asked on-air for e-mail suggestions, so no telling what else he got.

I know, I know. But not getting Timbuk3 gives me the crankypanyts! Mulitple votes on his blog for it.

Yeah, no My Old School or Closer to Fine either. Dave actually avoided a number of what I thought were unavoidable choices.
I think I missed the bonus track--anyone hear what it was?
-
so, today I was a little slow getting out of the house to go to the office, and Martha was packing up some boxes of our oldest son's stuff (he lives nearby, is 29, and is unlikely to move back in.) for me to take over to his house on my way. 10@10 is playing, and 'Sunscreen' starts on the way over. I'm a pretty sappy guy, and among the items in Jesse's boxes are things like his photo keychain from his high school prom, and such. I fear that he will not care as much about some of these things at this point in his life as he might later. I'm in a perfectly receptive mood for the lyrics to 'Sunscreen' at this point. When I see Jesse, I show him the keychain, and tell him that if he were my father, I wouldn't want him to throw this away! What a sap I've become!
As I drove on to the office, Listening to 'To Sir With Love' made me reflect on my first full year as a full-time teacher, and how I'm moving on to another school next year.
'Teach Your Children' is always nice. Always dig Garcia's pedal steel work.

He got that from me on his blog -- I said I'd prefer Lulu, so naturally he plays Stipe/Merchant. Just from what I've read so far, I second Mark's comment -- Dave asks for suggestions and then plays whatever he wants.

Too much resonance of "Deteriorata" in "Sunscreen," I'm thinking now.
Am I the only one who actually likes it? It's a wonderfully well-written piece, IMHO. Yes, I know it wasn't Vonnegut (as was the rumor), but it did begin life as a newspaper op-ed piece iirc. Clearly Luhrman was going for a Desiderata/Deteriorata feel (if that wasn't his model, I'd be amazed), but it's the words that carry the day.
BOS Joey Ramone, however -- my memorial service closer, right after The Kinks' "Days" makes everybody cry.

Razsty would beg to differ -- gawd how he hates Ms Merchant.
Unless you were referring to Michael Stipe as "she"...

BTW, final thought: how many 22-year-olds (the target demo of this particular set) actually, y'know, listen to KFOG?
-

Well, judging by the voices I hear calling in to the morning show (and the folks honored in the 10@10 Birthday Club), I'd say far more parents than kids.
