Title: 12 June 2007--it's 1990
Post by: urth on June 12, 2007, 10:02:14 AM
Yikes, run for the hills!

PiL leads off, so maybe Dave's digging deep again--he pulled off a couple of surprisingly good sets in recent weeks for years that had traditionally been not so much.

Ah, but here's the Smithereens, just when everything was starting to sound the same, "A Katrina Like You".

But anyway... how does a song that got little-to-no airplay in '90 become a Katrina 17 years later?

Here here.  That ending was reeeeally funny.  The show itself was pretty good, mainly thanks to Newhart himself and the handyman...what's his name?  Bill Paxton?  (Or is that the guy on Big Love?)

Yep, downward we go. Smithereens were OK, but Blues Traveller--nope.

You're thinking of Tom Poston. He just died a few weeks ago. And he was married to Suzanne Pleshette, who was in the clip we just heard.

Tom Poston, that is.  I see he died 13 days ago.  A funny guy.
ETA: Oh yes, Jim.  Not 13 days, one month and 13 days.  I have trouble with my months, sometimes.

Anyone think the acoustic guitar break in the middle of Last Plane Out could have been cribbed from a Jethro Tull tune? (I'm not quite putting my finger on which one, but I bet one of you guys can.)

Looks that way.  Never would have guessed.  For half the song I thought she was singing about Tom Cruise: "Heyyyyy, Middle Brow!"

Toy Matinee, the song is Last Plane Out. We've also heard The Ballad of Jenny Ledge from the same album. A 90 OHW.

And thanks for pegging the Mary-Chapin Carpenter track Mike--I couldn't place it, and if it's not a bustout, it hasn't been played more than once previously.

A classic example of an artist that Triple-A radio totally missed the boat on (or maybe it was the label's fault). But she shoulda been a KFOG staple in the early '90s -- "Stones in the Road" is one of THE great songs of that period, in any format.

This one?  Seems rarer.  Especially compared "The King is Half Undressed", or whatever it's called.  All good stuff though.

Who's this singing with Iggy? Sounds a little like Chrissy, but I'm thinking one of the B52 chix for some reason.

ETA: Knew I shoulda just waited and let Mike ID it.

Holy Toledo!  That's something.  She calls him "Jim", which is interesting, I think.  "Red, Hot and Blue".

Peter Murphy isn't a rarity, but still one of the great tunes of the year, so at least a VHM from me.

Been distracted through half this set, but it seems like a keeper.  Nice job by Dave all-in-all.

Definitely well above average for this year. I just scrolled thru the Top 40 list for '90 and got all the way to the N's before I found a song that I could honestly say I liked a lot (Michael Penn's No Myth).

actually "I Wanna Stay Home" is the Katrina, the next two on that album are just semi-predictable: "That is Why" and "The King is Half Undressed" show up 1, maybe 2 times a year.

King Katrina: Mr Idol's "Cradle of Love". I'd wager this one of the top 3 most-played from this year.

But yes, this was surprisingly good for 1990.

Similar to the Jellyfish, the real Katrina from this album is "Things She Said".

more like 6-7.  By far the two biggest Katrinas in 1990 are "Birdhouse In Your Soul" and, a bit if not totally under the radar, The Church's "Metropolis".  Everything else is in a multiple-way tie for 3rd or 4th.

Del Amitri is right up there on the Katrina list for 1990, but the Foghead told Annlisa to choose between "Kiss This Thing Goodbye" & Eric Johnson, and Annalisa picked the former.

But then again the Foghead coulda told her to pick between Soup Dragons & Stone Roses, and I'd've been happy either way.  Alas.
