It'd be cool, but they might have to kill the stream when he does it. Goddam internet copyright regs, ya know.

I believe it's possible to get "special dispensation" for unique events; dunno how much advance notice you have to give.

I'd suggest alternating selected SP tracks with, say, the Top 5 singles that week in '67 (which I'll have to look up tonite).

Whatever Dave decides, Capital Gold will be playing Sgt Pepper in its entirety at 8am Pacific, so if Bob does a crappy year on the Drive...

Come to think of it, maybe Bob'll play the album too. Or Ginger. Or Rob...

That's a little weird--fifteen minutes til the Sgt. Pepper set starts, and they just played Day Tripper. Beatles in saturation mode, I guess.

I'm assuming Sweeney's Rock Show on CG will be Pepper-centric too.

Dave said "a little pre-Sgt Pepper's Beatles for you, an appetizer shall we say..."

I thought it was cool, not weird.

This should make for an intersting chat, since we all know every track, which one comes next etc.

Or a very boring one

Dave read an email yesterday from someone saying SP is "overrated" (a popular contrarian opinion and certified argument-starter).

Y'know, for a 40-year-old piece of vinyl, this sounds pretty good--Dave did not abuse it too badly, obviously.

and it's getting better all the time!

He's not even dropping in "10@10" sounders between songs -- the suits are gonna be pissed.

Jayson Stark of ESPN has a book out on Over/Under-rated baseball players past & present, and makes the interesting point that you can even argue that Joe DiMaggio was over-rated.  The point being that there's no upper limit to most people's 'rating' system, until you get to deity class anyway, and at some point anyone's achievement can get over-rated.  But first you have to be very highly rated before you can be over-rated.

Personally, I think God is overrated.

"She's Leaving Home" makes me think of the Billy Bragg version on Sgt Pepper Knew My Father the charity SP covers LP from '89 or '90.

Actually, a set of covers of these songs woulda been a cool idea. Shatner, anyone?

I'm curious if he's going to open the mic while he flips the album, play a station ID, or just have a few seconds of dead air. We'll know soon enough.

She's Leaving Home--one of the heaviest tunes on the album--this and A Day in the Life.

Turned out it was a little of all three.

Within You Without You. Heard this on KUSF on the way home from the Bottom of the Hill, just before the DJ came on and announced George had died.

this used to be my least favorite track, when I was a child, but now it's my favorite.  Mshray's overall BOS for WYWY.

And now Paulie *is* 64.

And getting some excellent reviews for the new album, interesting because the last one was massively hyped and most folks were underwhelmed. The new one has a different kind of hype behind it (Starbucks) but it's being called his best since Flowers in the Dirt. EW said it's like a really good Wings LP (there's apparently a song that recalls "Jet").

More gender-bendering from Paul: "Lovely Rita", who looks a little like a military man. Hrm.

Good Morning, Good Morning--an underplayed Lennon tune with a pretty weird time signature. Portending a lot of the White Album methinks. Like the sax trio? quartet? part that runs throughout.

And you just knew Dave was going to let the last chord play out to the bitter end. (Btw, Don, it was tune number THIRTEEN, for the second time in a couple of weeks.)

Bet they play this one first in the marathon.

Either this or the Soul Patrol. Either way, the alarm will be set for 7 tomo'w.

Just switched to CG and they're playing "GM, GM". I've got nothing to say but "it's OK".

Dave didn't play the "secret loop". But CG just did.

Wow, I'd've guessed "All You Need is love" (released that summer-of-love but not on SP).

No, it turns out that her question was about songs that had been dropped from SP. Or rather: Which of these three wasn't dropped from SP: SFF, Penny Lane, and Golden Slumbers. The answer was the last of the three, of course. So the foghead got to choose between the other two, and rightly went for Strawberry Fields.

Title: my colorful Sgt. Pepper moment
Post by: ggould on June 01, 2007, 10:52:22 PM
At the moment this picture was taken, we were listening to near the end of Sgt. Pepper, and making colorful GAK (slime, gluep, etc.) and the principal came in to take a picture with the kids  and me wearing the shirt we made her.  They are all printed with my  core slogan: "There Ain't No Such Thing As A Free Lunch"

Interestingly, I went to the WFUV archives today (which I don't do often enuf; haven't listened to Vin Scelsa in ages). Pete Fornatale's "Mixed Bag" show did a Pepper salute last week, and indeed he was constrained by the Digital Milennium Copyright Nonsense -- instead of playing SPLHCB itself, played cover versions of the songs in the same order.

Kick Shaw - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
Joe Cocker - With A Little Help From My Friends (live Woodstock version)
Elton John - Lucy In The Sky
Gomez - Getting Better
George Burns - Fixing A Hole
Nilsson - She's Leaving Home
BeeGees/Frampton/George Burns - Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite
Angels of Venice - Within You Without You
John Denver - When I'm 64
Michelle Shocked - Lovely Rita
The Lolas - Good Morning, Good Morning
The Persuasions - Sgt. Pepper Reprise
Eric Burdon & War - A Day In The Life

And then he closed the show with Johnny Rivers, "Summer Rain". I had not heard Nilsson's lovely cover of "SLH" in decades; Several others of these were new to me.

(Wonder if KFOG got in any trouble for playing the LP -- not just once but 3 times.)
