or so I'm assuming.

Yep, Dave alluded to same during the morning show. Hope it's as good as yesterday's but there's a lot of bay area schlock out there that he didn't approach yesterday.
But let's try to come up with 10 non-schlocky bands he might easily play:
Graham Central Station
Malo
Montrose
Dead Kennedys
late 80s Todd Rundgren (he lived here then)
Sylvester
Doobies
Jefferson Starship (not the non-Jefferson variety, thanks)
Big Brother
Sons of Champlin (OK, slightly a stretch)
Journey (pre-77)
Commander Cody

what about all the bands on 415 Records & Beserkely Records?

Exactly--I just brain-dumped that list, I'm sure there are far more I missed--like Translator.
-
what about all the bands on 415 Records & Beserkely Records?
indeed -- I was amazed that Morey fave Translator was bypassed yesterday. Betcha today, tho'.

and sure enuf! TOTHC!
Beserkeley would include Earthquake, the Rubinoos, and Jonathan Richman, regardless of their geographic origins?

Yep, also Greg Kihn, so we might easily hear his cover of For You.

sure, even east coasters like Greg Kihn & Eddie Money.
That being said, the one band that would totally make my day would be Rancid

And that also brings up the possibility of other Gilman St bands, like Green Day and Primus.

totally agree! (tho' Green Day far more likely). BOS Lydia and Cold Blood. Make love to me, baby.

but ... "Primus sucks"
-
The pride of El Cerrito...CCR!
-
Is it me, or does the pitch on Fortunate Son keep fluctuating? Dave pull out the 45 for this one?
-
what about Oakland acts besides TOP? Pointer Sisters, MC Hammer, Digital Underground...
-
Calling Counting Crows a bay area band is kind of a stretch, at least after their first album. I think they all bailed to LA.
Hell, he's singing about the canyons of LA, for cryin' out loud.
-
BOS, cold blood
VHM Translator
hm ccr
and counting crows (who i like more than most do around here)
-
ugh! Sideshow Bob makes an appearance. Farfalle vendetta! Vendetta farfalle!
-
And now...back to the good stuff!
-
Sly is quite the palate cleanser after Sideshow Bob & Co. BOS for that reason alone, despite this being overplayed.

Is it me, or is this the l-o-o-o-o-o-o-n-g version?
Feh, back to the schlock. I think of Shrek everytime I hear this.

Woo Hoo!! BOS # whatever "Psychotic Reaction"!! "Put away the crack before the crack puts you away" indeed!
-

Shrek used "Allstar", not "Walking on the Sun", which is why I still kinda like the latter but not the former.
-
I thought Jim Carroll was from NYC.
-
BOS Janis, "Try", just 'cause it's NOT "Bobby McGee" or "Piece o' My Heart"

Guilt by association.
-
I thought Jim Carroll was from NYC.
He is. Not the slightest idea how he can logically be included here.
-
yikes, WOS "Find Your Way back" -- of all the Starship he coulda played, the only thing worse woulda been Janeyjaneyjaneyjane.

I'm sure he wasn't on either Beserkley or 415 labels. I emailed Dave, we'll see what his excuse is.

This was NOT what I was thinking of when I put Jefferson Starship on my list, but I guess they were still sporting the "jefferson" at this point.

looked it up, here's what Allmusic says:
Inspired by the success of his friend Patti Smith, who also married a background in poetry with a career in rock music, Carroll began writing songs; in 1978, backed by the San Francisco band Amsterdam (comprised of guitarists Terrell Winn and Brian Linsley, bassist Steve Linsley and drummer Wayne Woods), he cut a handful of demos, and was signed to Rolling Stones Records. Produced by label head Earl McGrath, the Jim Carroll Band's debut album Catholic Boy appeared in 1980; the subject of significant critical acclaim, it featured "People Who Died," the group's definitive moment.
After a move back to New York...

I don't think cutting "a handful of demos" here puts him in the Janis Joplin category, but... whatever.

I had turned up the volume starting with Translator, and this track made be scramble to turn it back down! Wos, indeed.

Dave sez volume 3 is on deck for tomorrow "probably" so I wonder if he'd gonna milk this for the rest of the week, or at least, until Friday, when we should get Hits From Hell, if there's any justice.
Personally, if there's as much of a drop in quality between today and tomorrow as there was between yesterday and today, I don't want to hear volume 4.

I told Dave he should do SF HFH on Fri, and I joked it would be "We Built This City" 10 times. But for me it would include "Find Your way back" and "Janeyjaneyjane". And if Jim Carroll counts, that's def a HFH as far as I'm concerned.
I'm wondering what suddenly prompted this SF theme week, though.

Good question. In the past, these SF-centric sets have been in conjunction with Local Music month, but that doesn't seem to be the case this time around.
-
1. Translator - Everywhere That I'm Not
2. Cold Blood - I Just Want to Make Love to You
3. CCR - Fortunate Son
4. Counting Crows - A Long December
5. Sly & the Family Stone - I Want to Take You Higher (BEST OF SET!!)
6. Smashmouth - Walking on the Sun
7. Count 5 - Psychotic Reaction
8. Jim Carroll Band - People Who Died
9. Janis with Big Brother - Try
10. Jefferston Starship - Find Your Way Back
BONUS TRACK: Jellyfish - I Wanna Stay Home
nice touch, that bonus. nice misspelling of "Jefferston" too. LOL!

I can't untie the fact of these sets from Dave's recent allusions to depression on his blog posts. Can't help wondering if he's trying to snap himself out of something.
Guessing for tomorrow:
Malo, "Suavecito"
Pointer Sisters, "Fire"
Third Eye Blind, "Semi-Charmed Life"
Chris Isaak, "SF Days, SF Nights"
MC Hammer, "U Can't Touch This"
Jesse Colin Young, "Ridgetop"
Digital Underground, "Sex Packets"
Would love to get Oaktown 3-5-7 and/or JJ Fad, but no way in hell.
You don't think he'd reach back to the Johnny Mathis era, do ya?
-

I think you may be onto something.

I think you've got at least 4 sure things on that list (he may not want to do rap twice in one set); I'm hoping the Pointers would be represented by "Yes We Can Can". And if Jim Carroll can make the cut (still cheating IMHO) then perhaps Clarence Clemons will show up.

There's probably a whole raft of psychedelic era bands he could yet tap into as well. Not to mention some of the obvious ones we'd rather not hear (Journey, Huey, etc. etc. etc.)
-
(Journey, Huey, etc. etc. etc.)
I requested Journey (when they were good) -- 'Topaz' or 'Of a Lifetime.'
-

I am glad to say that I was entirely wrong in my prediction of the way the week went. I still don't think Tuesday's set did it for me, but the rest of the week (Friday included) were pretty darn good sets. Woke up at 7 this morning just to hear the volume 1 set again, since I missed the Great Society tune on Monday night.

9. Janis with Big Brother - Try
I just assumed it was a clueless intern that typed in 'Big Brother' since this is from the "I Got Dem Ol' Kozmic Blues Again Mama!" album that came out after she dumped Big Brother, but I just heard the replay, and Dave said it too!
