I was thinking of that Vanessa Williams song recently.  Probably the best selling song to ever peak at #2, as it was only kept out of the top spot by the fact that 2 of the longest running #1's showed up in late '92 back to back.

all Black Crowes songs are pretty much the same song to me.

Smells Like Katreen Spirit for the 2nd time this morning -- this is "legal" in both '91 and '92.

I don't have Whitburn handy, but Top40 db sez it hit #1.  I seem to recall it being #1 for a number of weeks.  A lovely example of a well-written pop ballad, in any case.

I'll have to doublecheck, but I had it that between "End of the Road" and "I Will Always Love You" being #1 for a combined 20+ weeks that year STBFL got squeezed out.

When 2006 comes up, will we hear the Rascal Flatts version of this?

Nice of Dave to remind us how grievously Clinton's comments on marijuana got twisted.  Not that he didn't earn the Slick Willie sobriquet by his own actions, but he actually said couldn't inhale, not didn't inhale.

LOL!  And I do think it's a good record, I had it on my best-of-'92 mixtape right alongside Vanessa Williams, TLC, En Vogue and Billy Ray C.

Can't recall the title, think it was track #1 though.  Neither "Remedy" nor "Thorn In My Pride" anyway.

fwiw, that wasn't solo Byrne, it was TH; one of the 2 songs recorded in the sessions for Naked that wound up on their greates hits compilation.

I still think it's a little ludicrous that they had to spell it "diz knee" in order to avoid a lawsuit. Such are the times we live in.

Hey, it's Metallica--and it's not Enter Sandman. Whoa.

I remember predicting the Rodney King riots.  The verdicts were announced midday, and I heard the news on my walkman as I was riding my bike over to play pick-up hoops at UCSB.  A number of the players were local African-americans, and I was the one who told everybody what had just happened.  Needless to say my African-american friends were besides themselves, and I said to them, "I have a bad feeling that LA is going to burn tonight."  After playing for an hour or two I further remember going home to shower & then turning on the TV and being mildly surprised that no incidents were being reported yet.  But within another hour, as sundown approached, that was no longer the case.

Pretty sure I was right about "Sting Me" beign the opening track.  The Southern Harmony & Musical Companion is an LP I owe a revisit to.

Anything off of Angel With A Lariat would be frickin' awesome, but it'll never happen.  Though Ginger might play it if we ask her nicely enough.

Oh, you meant track #1 on their album--I thought you were talking about this set. Yes, it's the leadoff cut on SH&MC. Great album--I too have not listened to it in a good long while.

OK here's the chart scoop...

STBFL was #1 for 5 weeks in Feb/March of '92.  EOTR was #1 for 13 weeks from July to Nov.  IWALY was #1 for 14 weeks from Nov '92 to March '93.  Big year for ballads.

Thanks Mike!

EOTR broke the record for longest stay at number one only to see the very next #1 song supplant them as record holders.

Kinda like Shaun Alexander's NFL TD record, only worse.

Sorry to belabor this, but I would've bet all my Final Jeopardy money that the Heights' "How Do You Talk to an Angel" had a single week at the throne between those two massive hits.

PS: Marginally relatedly, someone asked me recently what the longest-running #1 was.  When I replied that it was Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men's "One Sweet Day," he was dumbfounded; he couldn't remember a single note of it.  I can only remember the chorus.

And you (sorta) win Final Jeopardy! The Heights actually had 2 weeks at the top between EOTR and IWALY. Ken Jennings would be proud
