Ree-Ree, "there's a rose in Black and Spanish Harlem"

I once met this guy, we went to his place and were going thru his record collection and he had that 45. I said "Ooo! Aretha!" and he said "oh yeah, a friend of mine gave me that as a joke .. he knows I hate all that (n-word) music".

I left pretty quickly after that...

I've switched over to SmoothFM and here's that H&O version of "If I Can Dream About You".  Different lyrics to some of the verses?  Disappointing. No match for the original, which is one of the great pop singles of the '80s.

indeed, it was the Stubbsmeister. "Don't Walk Away", I'd never heard that one, another UK hit that didn't do much here (early '80s).

Wow, Marty Wilde (Kim's dad) did a version of "Abergavenny"? The only versions I know are by Shannon (a white guy, not the Shannon who did "Let the Music Play") back in '69, and there was also a "new wave" cover by Wide Boy Awake in '83 or so.

Addendum: a Google search revealed that Marty Wilde also recorded under the name Shannon, at least according to one website. WTF?

Marty Wilde and Shannon are one and the same.  He was recording under a new name presumably to forge a new ID in the UK.  I have the song on the Bubblegum Classics Vol. One comp & it's fab, clearly inspired by the marching-band arrangement of the Turtles' "She'd Rather Be With Me."
