Post by: RGMike on January 15, 2007, 07:33:51 AM
Expect the usual suspects.  For comparison, here's last year's set:

Quote
1/16/06 - Monday! Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
1. Billie Holiday - Strange Fruit
2. Richie Havens - Freedom
3. U2 - MLK
4. Bob Dylan - The Times They Are A-Changin'
5. Terence Trent D'Arby - As Yet Untitled
6. Marvin Gaye - What's Goin' On
7. Sly & the Family Stone - Everyday People
8. Stevie Wonder - Black Man
9. U2 - Pride
10. Jimmy Cliff - Wonderful World, Beautiful People

BONUS TRACK: Al Green - Change is Gonna Come

I think that's been the set since at least 2003--Dave may switch some of the clips and sound bites around, but those songs have become pretty much a constant. And I think we've been been issuing him a pass on criticizing the repetition (unlike, say, Tax Day and Halloween sets) since this is a pretty definitive selection of songs.

Heard Strange Fruit as part of an MLK set on KALW yesterday afternoon, btw.

10-way tie, obviously, but special mention to "Freedom", after having heard the wonderful interview with Richie on CG last week. Preach it, Sistah Havens!

It is a wonderful set, and I don't really have a problem with it being rerun as-is, tho' I really need to turn Dave on to Gary Byrd (feat. Stevie Wonder)'s black-history rap "The Crown", which is heard often on CG and is superior IMHO to Stevie's own "Black Man".

I suspect Marilynn and Judge on KPOO will be MLK-centric today as well.

And indeed it was the identical set.  Only variable will be Annalisa's Rosalie's Bonus Track.

ETA: Bonus is Shawn Colvin's cover of "Pride in the Name of Love". New to me. (the other choice was Marley's "Redemption Song".)

Mo' better bonus on KPOO: JB, "I Don't Want Nobody To Give Me Nothin' (Open Up the Door, I'll Get it Mahself)".

tomorrow I return to my job, to minister to these students who are almost all racist.  All of the races.  I wish I had recorded the snippet about Agape love.  I would play it for my students.

I'd be interested to know how many of them have seen the new movie Freedom Writers.

Yup, even a 3-day weekend makes it hard to re-enter!
