but, as Casino Royale opens tomorrow, a "Best Bond Themes" 10@10 would be totally groovy, no?

I'm sure I've ranked my favorite Bond themes for you guys before, but here's how I'm feelin' 'em this a.m.:

1. Goldfinger
2. For Your Eyes Only
3. Thunderball
4. The Look of Love
5. A View to a Kill
6. Live and Let Die
7. The Living Daylights
8. You Only Live Twice
9. Nobody Does It Better
10. Goldeneye

DHM: Die Another Day

DHM = "Dishonorable mention", yes?  (If so, I agree).  Glad to see A-Ha's forgotten "Living Daylights" on your list -- one of the few Bonds songs not to chart in the US.  An overlooked gem, IMHO. In fact, your list is quite similar to mine, tho' I have a soft spot for the orig "Casino Royale" (Herb Alpert), even if that technically isn't a "real" Bond film.  What was the one Gladys Knight did? "License to Kill?"  One quibble: "Look of Love" isn't a "title" song.  But then Octopussy didn't have one either for obvious reasons.

I'd also have "Diamonds are Forever" (another brassy Bassey, iirc) on my list, and I think Alice Cooper's "Man With The Golden Gun" is better than what the producers came up with.

Gah, oversight!  I knew I'd forget one.  Put Shirley II at No. 4 on my list.  :)  I've never heard "Casino Royale"!

Just your typical jaunty Alpert instrumental (there were lyrics -- utterly dreadful ones -- over the closing credits version, but the instrumental version was the radio hit).  I'd wager you HAVE heard it, without knowing what it was.

Would be much preferable to what we're more likely to hear: a LFTA set, which explains why we heard 73 on a Thursday.

Actually, YOU'RE right--Dave just mentioned it on the morning show--an all-Bond 10@10. I'm in shock. He's sure Shirley Bassey and Duran Duran are in, still on the fence about Herb Alpert. So let's send encouragement for that one.

it's possible he's a Bond fan -- he's done a Bond set once before, no? Or maybe  Columbia/Sony greased a few palms at Cumulus...

I emailed him to suggest Alpert, A-ha, Nancy Sinatra and Sheena Easton (lotsa luck!) and then I went to the "Turkeys" blog to vote for "Tarzan Boy".

ETA: also, Dave probably thinks Daniel Craig is HOT.

BOS3 Carly.  Best incorporation of a hard-to-incorporate title into a lyric:

"Like heaven above me
The Spy who Loved Me..."

I see Dave has edited one of his bumpers so it says "10 at 10...KFOG's 10 at 10."

Nice touch.

But WTF is this one? It sounds sort of like Fastball meets Pearl Jam...with strings.

ETA: Ah, I see Davefish has ID'd this as Audioslave. Yep, that would be it.

They contributed the lyrics for "Goldeneye", which Tina Turner sang. Not a big hit in the US.

Oh my yes.  I never told y'alls, but 3 years ago, I went with a group of friends (Freaks and Freak Associates) on a Memorial Day weekend excursion to Bar Harbor, Maine, where my friend Alli (married to a Freak) has family.  We were staying in a family home, and I couldn't resist the urge to dig through the vinyl.  Among the treasures: a few Herb Alpert albums, including Whipped Cream and Other Delights (a/k/a That Cover) and a GH comp.  I had the drunken genius idea to play "Spanish Flea" at least 20 times that weekend, as laugh track, as conversation starter, as phone answerer, whatever.  That weekend has multiplied my love of the mighty mighty Alpert.

As I may have mentioned before, I grew up in a very MOR household (Mom loved Sinatra & Robert Goulet).  I didn't "discover" Top 40 radio until the fall of '67, when Lulu and the Box Tops had the top 2 singles. During the Summer of Love, I was oblivious to rock, pretty much. We listened to WHN, the big middle-of-the-road station, and both "Casino Royale" and "You Only Live Twice" were much bigger hits on the MOR charts than on the Pop list.  So they have a special place in my heart.

I never realized this, and I'm suddenly curious: No Revolver? No Pet Sounds?  No Sgt. Pepper?  I came at pop from an unavoidably retrograde angle (born in '72, pop savvy at '76) so I feel like a child at the knee when I ask, "What was life like before rock?"

Yeah, it's really weird.  I'm sure I saw the Beatles on Sullivan, since we ALWAYS watched Ed on Sun nite, but I don't really recall it vividly. What I DO remember is everybody talking about them the next day and our teacher (Catholic school, tho' she wasn't a nun) coming in and saying we were FORBIDDEN to talk about "those sick sick people". Anyone heard speaking of the Beatles would be punished. I can't really explain why, even though I saw rock acts on Sullivan and other shows, I never thought to seek them out on the radio.

In the fall of '67 we were allowed to bring radios to school to listen to the World Series (they played day games back then) and while waiting for the game to start, Sister Mary Whats-her-name let us listen to Top 40 WABC. And I heard "To Sir With Love" and "The Letter" for the first time and suddenly I was hooked. A whole new world was opened up to me.

What a great story.  Were you rooting for the Cards or the Bosox then?  If I go to sleep right now I might be awake in time for the beginning of the replay, probably a good idea.

OMFG!!! Sheena!!! BOS5 and Gaz is gonna be PISSED that he missed this.

I can't hear this without thinking I'm in a karaoke bar.  A very gay karaoke bar.

Which leads me to repeat: Any takers for Dec. 18-28?

I'm there.  Can't sing, don't care.  :)

That was a mighty fun set!  Wish I'd been there to ID the Chris Cornell for you, I heard him talking about it on LIVE 105 not long ago, as well as the then-upcoming elections.  He is a very sharp & well-spoken guy.

And to end this thread, I saw Casino Royale tonite, and it's very entertaining (if a bit long), with none of the smarmy juvenilia the series became known for. Mr Craig is quite good.

BTW, anyone else notice Dave pronounce CR as "casino ree-al"? (like Camino Real -- the man's just got Latinos on the brain!)
