Yay! REM

This might be my favorite REM tune: "Can't Get There From Here"

i caught the end of the song, and thought it was aerosmith. too bad. i love that r.e.m. song, too.
-
And Happy B-Day Don Pardo! 87!!!
Y'know, when Don goes, he's takin' 10@10 with him...
Early BOS REM, Mr Citywide suit-n-tie!
-
another strong BOS contender: Wang Chung, their artistic peak. Good sndtk, good film.

sounds like something hall & oates would have done.
-
Wow! Dave's actualy playing good Wang Chung. The title track from the To Live And Die In L.A. soundtrack.
Has anyone else ever seenthis movie? It is totally great, directed by William (Exorcist, French Connection) Friedkin. It featured William L. Pedersen 15 years before C.S.I., bungee jumping before it was even called that, the first backwards on the freeway car chase (now a cliche, but very effective here), and an as-yet-unmatched plot twist with 20 minutes left in the film.

At the very least, Dave is going to lose use of a whole bunch of bumpers. Wonder if he'll bring back Larry "Bud"? (Is Calvert DeForest still alive?)
Who else would make a fitting successor to DP? I'm drawing a blank so far....

I'm sure he's still got the Melman stuff on file, not to mention Monty Hall, who also hosted for a while. My guess is they'll get the guy with the "announcer voice" who does a lot of KFOG promos.

yuck. i'd prefer harvey fierstein. or armistead maupin.
-
least necessary, Simple Minds' "Dont You...", speaking of cliches.
-

Some nominees:
Don Cornelius
William Hung
Lil Jon
The Snapple Lady
Gavin Newsom
-
BOS (and nice segue) to tina and bryan.

Is this a breakout? Not one that gets much play, certainly.

hmmm...the luch lady would work, too. she announces the menu for some building on capitol hill. when i lived in d.c., i'd call every day to listen to the recording. she makes minestrone soup sound like party.
-
damn. i voted too soon. the sweet sounds of mister mister!!!! most confusing song title for an 8-year old. along with amy grant's "el shaddai" - which came later, of course.
-
Never thought I'd say this, but HM to Bryan Adams. Hadn't heard "It's Only Love" in many years.
And now the poor (literally; this album apparently never recouped :!: ) Mr. Mister.

you can just tell yourself you're voting for tina.
we may get some soul in this set. it's reminding me of texas radio...i can't think of what artists might appear, though.

The KFOG morning show used to call up and put the message on the air. After a while it got old.
I'd suggest Keith David (very deep-voiced black actor; he does the Navy and UPS commercials -- what can Brown do for KFOG?). Or James Earl Jones.
Gaz, did you mean Lil Jon the rapper or Stuttering John, the Tonight Show announcer and ex-Stern hanger-on?
-
amy grant's "el shaddai" - which came later, of course.
We have to play this song from time to time at church, but for me I'm almost positive this contains some ripped off melodies from Stevie Wonder. I haven't been able to figure it out for over a decade. Am I insane?
-
"A new explosion of wonderfulness in your mouth".
Ahem.
here's Gaz's WOS -- "Miami Vice" A new explosion of pastels in your wardrobe!
-
Hey, all. It's been a busy morn here at Dayjob From Hell, Inc. I just wanted to thank POC, RGMike & Lightnin' Rod for making the scene on Saturday to celebrate 40 years of Beejness. YOU GUYS RULE!
(as does everyone here of course)

Sorry I couldn't have made it. I haven't had a day off all month. School is kicking my ass.

i don't see the connection. but that doesn't mean much...maybe the descending and ascending chord patterns remind you of "don't you worry 'bout a thing?"
-
another BOS -- JC Melonhead, "Justice & Independence '85". Woo Hoo!
This and the Bryan Adams remind me of my '85 vacation, I flew out here and drove from LA to Seattle. A Mexico City Earthquake clip should be imminent.

i'm glad you turned 40. i had fun! :) and we met rod's hottie!

No worries, Geoff! Sorry to hear they're running you ragged, though.
-
another BOS -- JC Melonhead, "Justice & Independence '85". Woo Hoo!
there's been some good mellonhead lately. both here and on the drive, i think.
-
Most representative of year (for me): Foreigner, "I Want to Know What Love Is." That opening mood-synth lingers in my memories.
-
dude - turn up the foreigner. yes!
i would be a total sap if i voted this bos. but i really want to.
-
BOS (and nice segue) to tina and bryan.
Not particularly wild about either song, but the seque from Kyrie Eleison (sp?) to the Cougar tune was pretty seamless. Nice.

Oh well, I guess my dreams of the Christian music companies getting taken to court for plagiarism will have to wait!

I think I'm misremembering "El Shaddai," but isn't it more or less the same melody as the Beatles' "I Me Mine"?
-
i'm glad you turned 40. i had fun! and we met rod's hottie!
I'm glad you had fun! And, dang- I know: Lightnin's Ladyfriend is way beautatious.
-
any song I have actually played should get some consideration. Always a sucker for the big choir doowha!

no shame to vote this BOS! their crowing achievement, and the gospel version by the NJ Mass Choir (on their own) kicks ass.

My B-day is Sunday after next and PoC's is four Sundays later. Would y'all be up for another BBQ fest at chez Castro Valley somewhere in between?
-

Stop, you're making me blush. We had a good time, sorry we were late... Would have liked to seen Amelia play.
Btw, where in Albany were you playing, POC?
-
Even the inevitable Huey can't ruin this surprisingly strong set.

Best Typo of Set.

and was that patti labelle? "let's talk about love"
according to songfacts: Jennifer Holliday sang backup.
-

i wasn't playing. i went to see carlos guitarlos play at the ivy room, but by the time i arrived, he had finished. so we had to drink instead.
-
jeez, when I called Dave to vote for this song, I could hardly hear him, the music was cranked so loud! Also, best Bass of set, I believe this is Tony Levin.

Ahh, the Ivy Room. I've had drinks there.

ROTFLSHIPMP!
Wonder if he and Mr Isaak have ever compared, er, notes.

it is, indeed, the bald bassist. yay!
-

it was the first time i'd been there. not bad. good live blues band and dancing. the guy who owns it, bill macbeath, plays bass with carlos.

I HATE MY JOOOOOBBBBBBBB!
(whew). OK. Where were we?
Rod: Don't worry about being late. I'm glad you were there and I'm glad you had fun!
So, we're trying to set up a Mshray B-day party for March 6th? I have a sinking feeling I'm going to have a rehearsal at some point on that day- but it won't be all day....

It probably shouldn't matter cuz of my sterling attendance record (0 for lifetime) but I'm outta town that weekend. Actually I'll be in NYC, and hopefully meeting up with Mr. McCombs at some point in the week. Crossing fingers.
-
I think I'm misremembering "El Shaddai," but isn't it more or less the same melody as the Beatles' "I Me Mine"?
no, not really. the first few chords are similar, but that's about it.
-
So, we're trying to set up a Mshray B-day party for March 6th?
I'm thinking that this date is coming up too soon to get good attendance. I really want to find a time that we can guarantee the attendance of
A) Mr & Mrs. Urth
B) both Alicat's & DaveMack's kids (who match up precisely) & spouses
C) the future Mrs. Lightnin' Rod
D) everybody else who attends faithfully & usually need no encouragement. (give yourselves a pat on the back)

Okay Mr Hoffman, you just sealed your fate. You pick a date that you & your better half can make it out to CV & I'll plan accordingly. Feel free to make it far out on the calendar, we needn't be bound by my b-day. Just sometime between now & the 4th of July (non-inclusive, that's one of our camping weekends).

Indeed, the April Fool bring-your-fave-comedy-records thing was intended to celebrate poc's natividad. But since that's a no-room-for-kids situation, we can do that AND BBQ on a date of Urth's choosing.
