I also dig Santa Esmeralda.  This was the first version of this song I ever heard.  It was many years before the Animals version surfaced -- for me.

Anybody know who this young "Russ" is that picked the set?  I missed the very beginning while I placed my order at the McD's drive-thru.  Anybody hear just how young he is?

Staple Singers -- nice!  Seems like a bit of a departure from gospel though...

least Necessary: "Don't Leave Me This Way", which we heard in last Thursday's 1977 "classic".

So far we've heard 2 songs (this and the Santa Esmeralda) from the fabulous 2-volume sndtk to the movie 54, which I finally caught on TV last week (not a very good film, alas).

TSOP
Me and Mrs. Jones
Lady Marmalade
Let's Stay Together
That Lady (parts 1 and 2)
You Make Me Feel Brand New
I'll Always Love My Mama (you only get one, you only get one)

I once ran the sound (haha, I mean hit pause/play on an iPod connected to a mixer/amp connected to some big old speakers) at a wedding & reception once.  This was the cake cutting song.

At the time (5 years ago), I had never heard the song.  But then, I'm a suburban Chinese American kid.  There was seldom a DJ or dancing at the receptions I went to growing up.

Wonder if it's more common than I know.

As a kid who took used to take AC Transit all over Alameda, Oakland and Berkeley, I recall a bus poster with two slick young black men posing in some cool manner.  Inevitably their eyes were blacked out, moustaches and horns added, etc.

Sadly, I didn't know much about music then.  I wonder if that might have been an ad for the Brothers.  Seems plausible.

The back up sings both ways. Rolly-coastah baby repeated at the end and I distinctly heard rolle"r" coaste"r" in the beginning. Put on headsets and turned it up.
