no hints on the morning show, but fingers crossed.
Well, I'm not complaining, but I guess Dave's Cards/Tigers jingle will have to wait

"Soul-tinged tunes from the mid and late 70s"??? Damn, and I was all primed for Tigers Rah, Cardinals BOOO...
Although it probably will be pretty good.

'specially since it's been 7 weeks since we last visited '68. Bow-day-ow!

Yow! Always dig EW&F, though September is pretty badly overplayed.
-
ooo! Santa Esmeralda, "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood". BOS1 to a lost disco nugget.
-
I also dig Santa Esmeralda. This was the first version of this song I ever heard. It was many years before the Animals version surfaced -- for me.

of course, Dave likes it for other reasons:

all together now: "Love ROLLY-coaster"

TANC: Mavis singing to "daddy" just for Gaz!
she's not a girl to linger
but she feels like a (crispettty, crunchetty) Butterfinger.
-
Anybody know who this young "Russ" is that picked the set? I missed the very beginning while I placed my order at the McD's drive-thru. Anybody hear just how young he is?
Staple Singers -- nice! Seems like a bit of a departure from gospel though...

I haven't heard this one before, but it sure feels like soul to me.
Do it again!

Wait, wasn't it Jisco?
-
Oh MY! BOS3 J-5, "I Am Loooooooooove" (the looooooooooong version)!
Tho' it occurs to me the melody is a bit of a rip off of Skylark's "Wildflower".

Damn. Makes me feel old. I thought I was at least kind of towards the bottom of KFOG's demographic, at 36.

was that really news to you? I know Dave's played this numerous times, and the Mayfield connection is pretty well-known. (Maybe I'm just jaded.)

I bet you don't use that lube on your car. I rest my case.
ETA: As great a song as "Don't Leave Me This Way" is, I'm tired of it.

as I posted that last remark, Michael's singing:
"I am loooove
Sprinkle myself around you
I am looooove
Shower my worth upon you"
EEEWWWWWWWWWW!
-
oooohhh, don't leave me this way.
Awesome set.
no time or privacy to post

News to me, but I'm nearly as young as Russ. (Ok, in my mind.)

I knew the song, heard it here numerous times. But had never looked to see what album it came from.
You? Jaded? Nah, couldn't be... ;)

least Necessary: "Don't Leave Me This Way", which we heard in last Thursday's 1977 "classic".
So far we've heard 2 songs (this and the Santa Esmeralda) from the fabulous 2-volume sndtk to the movie 54, which I finally caught on TV last week (not a very good film, alas).
-
I looooove the Brothers Johnson. This is one of their best.
-
I can't listen (yet again), but TANC: My morning commute listening today was the All Music Guide's "Super Soul Singles":
Back Stabbers
The Love I Lost
September
When Will I See You Again? (ooh, ahhh ... ahhh, ooh)
TSOP
Me and Mrs. Jones
Lady Marmalade
Let's Stay Together
That Lady (parts 1 and 2)
You Make Me Feel Brand New
I'll Always Love My Mama (you only get one, you only get one)
Didn't I Blow Your Mind This Time
-
I looooove the Brothers Johnson. This is one of their best.
there's a joke there somewhere about the brother's johnson needing some JizzCo...

Yes, there is. Fer sure. I laughed out loud, cause I didn't get the Johnson bit right away. Good one.
Cut the Cake, while you're at it.

BOS4 AWB, cuttin' a rug while cuttin' the cake.

Just make sure it isn't cheesecake.

BOS4 AWB, cuttin' a rug while cuttin' the cake.
I once ran the sound (haha, I mean hit pause/play on an iPod connected to a mixer/amp connected to some big old speakers) at a wedding & reception once. This was the cake cutting song.
At the time (5 years ago), I had never heard the song. But then, I'm a suburban Chinese American kid. There was seldom a DJ or dancing at the receptions I went to growing up.
Wonder if it's more common than I know.

"I need a little piece
baby you know what I mean"
damn, all these songs are about sex! I'm shocked!
-
BOS4 AWB, cuttin' a rug while cuttin' the cake.
Pretty funky for a bunch o' scotsmen.
And somehow I knew we were gonna be Givin it Up...
-
TANC: Marvin's got to get it up -- Gaz will have to catch the replay.

What's wrong with cheesecake?

Nothin'. But with all that cutting going on, I thought it would be better to keep cheese out of the picture.

all together now: "Love ROLLY-coaster"
Guess just as he can't say the word "Beatles" with out appending the word "yay" onto it, to Dave, this song is always known by the name "Love Rolly-coaster". He's quite consistent about it.

And I learned a new one. Had to look up IRL. But now I know

I looooove the Brothers Johnson. This is one of their best.
As a kid who took used to take AC Transit all over Alameda, Oakland and Berkeley, I recall a bus poster with two slick young black men posing in some cool manner. Inevitably their eyes were blacked out, moustaches and horns added, etc.
Sadly, I didn't know much about music then. I wonder if that might have been an ad for the Brothers. Seems plausible.

The Ohio Players' backing vocalists are singing "rollycoastah" as well! Listen closely. I assume that's why Dave started saying it that way.

Ooh, beautiful seque into "Love Rollercoaster". Dave can now get a job doing the drive on KISS :-).
We were doing a lab, and I turned my laptop on to this, and the kids recognized the music as being from "San Andreas" (they're talking about the video game!) What a trip!

The back up sings both ways. Rolly-coastah baby repeated at the end and I distinctly heard rolle"r" coaste"r" in the beginning. Put on headsets and turned it up.
